Field assistants in Behavioural Ecology

Four field assistant positions are available in an international research project on communication and behavioural ecology in nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos).

Fieldwork will be done in April and May 2008 at the Research Station Petite Camargue Alsacienne in France (www.camargue.unibas.ch). The project is run by Dr. Valentin Amrhein (University of Basel, Switzerland) and Prof. Dr. Marc Naguib (Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), Heteren, Netherlands).

To investigate vocal communication strategies of nightingales, we record songs (including nocturnal song) and conduct playback experiments. The field assistants will also participate in systematic surveys of territory settlement and singing activity, and assist in capturing and banding the birds. The field site is situated at the Petite Camargue Alsacienne in France, about 10 km north of Basel (Switzerland).

We cannot cover travel expenses, but we offer free accommodation and use of the infrastructure at the research station. Field assistants will receive 400 Euros to cover living expenses. Field assistants are expected to stay for the entire field season from 7 April to the end of May 2008. Field work will be demanding, and we will use bicycles to visit every nightingale territory on two extensive census rounds per day at midnight and at dawn, respectively.

Field assistants are expected to work on their own at night and thus should love working in dark and lonesome places only accompanied by singing nightingales.

The language at the research station will be English.

The dynamic behaviour of trees in relation to orangutans and other arboreal mammals

It has recently been suggested that stiff-legged bipedality, as is currently seen in both humans and orangutans, evolved as an adaptation to access and move about safely and efficiently on thin, compliant branches and lianas (Thorpe et al, 2007a). It might allow them to maintain a safer grip, while they could use the energy stored in the branch to “bounce” along with a slow running-like gait, like a person on a trampoline. However, whether movement of this type is possible depends on the stiffness and effective mass of the branches, and hence their resonant frequency. All of these will fall towards the tip of the branch. The mechanical properties of the branches and trunks of trees will also affect the ways in which other primates and smaller arboreal mammals access and move about in them. The aim of this project is to understand how tree flexibility limits and modifies locomotion of arboreal mammals. To achieve this, the student will film orangutans moving on horizontal branches of trees to determine their kinematics, the movement of their centre of gravity and the movements of the branch. The dynamic mechanical properties of the branches will also be determined using the films and by carrying out bending tests on the branches. The dynamic mechanical properties of the branches and trunks of a range of tropical and temperate trees will also be measured to enable us to predict how they will affect the locomotion of other arboreal animals such as squirrels and other primates. This NERC-funded studentship is part of a wider project led by Dr Thorpe at Birmingham University on the evolution of stiff-legged bipedality. Paid Research Field Assistant needed for Least Tern study

PAID RESEARCH FIELD ASSISTANT needed to assist with ongoing study of interior least terns in Dallas, Texas, mid May to mid August 2008 (start/end dates flexible).

Intern will be required to work both week-end days, frequently starting at 6 am. Intern will not work more than 40 hours per week but may work 7 days a week. Duties include identifying and counting birds, collecting behavioral observations, data entry, writing up reports, downloading GPS data, producing maps. Experience with ArcView a plus. Field assistant opportunity

Field Assistants needed for studies on mate choice, kinship and endocrinology in Belding's ground squirrels.

Research will be conducted in the eastern Sierra Nevada, centered at a field station near Mammoth Lakes, CA. Work will include trapping and marking of free-living ground squirrels, as well as behavioral observations throughout the reproductive season. Work will begin in mid-April and continue through July. Previous field experience is desired, but not necessary.

Dolphin Research Center (DRC) is currently accepting applications for Research Interns for the Summer term.

DRC is a not-for-profit educationand research facility, home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. DRC is located on Grassy Key, in the heart of the Florida Keys. Internships at DRC are an exciting way to develop career skills as well asan opportunity to get "behind the scenes" to see how a marine mammal facility operates.

Research interns participate in DRC's ongoing research projects, giving them broad exposure to a variety of research methodologies. Specific job duties include:

Study marmot behavior and ecology

Several field assistants needed for a field study of yellow-bellied marmot behavior and ecology.

Work begins on 16 April in CrestedcButte, Colorado and goes through 10 September.

We're looking forcpeople who can commit to at least 2 months, preferably more, and wecare especially looking for people who can start work in the earlyc(mid-April to July).cEarly season applicants must be prepared to ski or hike in and workon cross-country skis or snow shoes in and around the 9,500 foot RockyMountain Biological Laboratory (www.rmbl.org). Days are long and workis physically demanding; you must be willing to hike and work in this spectacularly beautiful sub-alpine valley.

You will be expected to trap, mark and observe marmots, collect biological samples (blood,feces, hair), and regularly enter data into spreadsheets. A vehicle is a bonus, but not required. The ideal person will learn quickly, and be able to work both independently and as a member of aclose-knit team.This is a great opportunity to obtain field experience before graduate school.

Previous volunteers have obtained course credit, engaged in independent study, conducted honors research that formed the basis of senior theses back at their home institutions, or collected data that became part of masters work at their home institution.

We have up to two REU positions (the first is through the RMBL and applications for this close 15 February); the second is pending. We may have funds to pay expenses for 1 or 2 volunteers. We may be ableto provide free housing for early-season volunteers. Otherwise, volunteers are expected to pay RMBL station fees, housing and food (for most, this works out to about $25/day).

PhD opportunity in animal cognition

Project: The role of stimulus quality in picture-object recognition by pigeons

The Department of Neurobiology and Cognition Research, University of Vienna(http://cognition.univie.ac.at), is seeking to fill a two-year PhD-position in the area of pigeon visual categorization, beginning inFebruary 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is part of a new project aimed at investigating various aspects of stimulus quality that may play a role in establishing picture-object equivalence. The experiments will be carried out in parallel to and in close cooperation with those of another research program investigating picture-object recognition, which started last year.

We invite applications from prospective PhD-students who should have completed qualifications equivalent to an Austrian Masters degree. Preferably, we will hire a candidate who will increase the student diversity of our working group and who can be expected to give a freshimpetus to our research in the form of innovative views and ideas. The preferred candidate will have a theoretical background in visual perception and categorization and experience in performing learning experiments with animals. In particular, familiarity with training pigeons in experimental chambers (Skinner-boxes) would be advantageous. Furthermore, reasonable skills in English language arerequired, and some basic competence in statistics is recommended.

Contexte

La plupart des propriétés comportementales du conditionnement de peur sont similaires chez les mammifères jusqu’à l’homme. Par ailleurs, les substrats neurobiologiques tant de l’acquisition, que de l’expression et de l’extinction de la peur apprise sont conservés. Un probable circuit de la peur dans le cerveau a été tout d’abord élaboré chez le rongeur, suggérant que l’amygdale et ses projections seraient impliquées dans l’acquisition et l’expression de la peur conditionnée. L’importance des connaissances acquises chez les mammifères contraste avec la faiblesse des données disponibles chez les oiseaux. Chez ces derniers, des homologies de structures ont été observées par rapport au cerveau mammalien. Mais le terrain reste, pour beaucoup, encore à explorer.

Projet de recherche

Après avoir acquis des compétences solides sur la peur spontanée chez les oiseaux, l’équipe Comportement Neurobiologie Adaptation de Nouzilly a choisi d’orienter ses travaux scientifiques sur les peurs apprises. Le travail expérimental se réalisera sur deux lignées de cailles divergeant sur leur comportement de peur. Ces deux lignées sélectionnées au cours de tests standardisés présentent des réactions comportementales, physiologiques, et neurobiologiques différentes quand elles sont mises en situations effrayantes. L’objectif du projet actuel est de comprendre les bases neurobiologiques des apprentissages mis en place lors de situations de peur conditionnée. Cet aspect sera développé à trois niveaux 1- comportemental: déterminer les situations expérimentales les plus discriminantes entre les deux lignées de cailles en terme de réponse de peur conditionnée ; 2- physiologique: corroborer cette réponse à des indicateurs hormonaux (glucocorticoïdes, catécholamines,...) et neurovégétatifs (réponse cardiaque) ; 3- neurobiologique: identifier les structures cérébrales impliquées par des approches d’imagerie cellulaire (immunohistochimie ...) et de neurochirurgie stéréotaxique (lésions, microinjections intracérébrales d’agents pharmacologiques). A terme, ces travaux visent à caractériser les processus cognitifs développés par les oiseaux pour percevoir les modifications de leur environnement et ajuster leur comportement de peur.

Equipe d’accueil

La spécificité de recherche de l’équipe d’accueil se décline selon trois axes qui interagissent entre eux : (i) les apprentissages sociaux, (i) les apprentissages alimentaires, (iii) les émotions et le tempérament.

La personne recrutée s’appuiera sur les compétences de l’équipe d’accueil dans les domaines de la neurobiologie des émotions et des apprentissages chez les oiseaux (caille) et les mammifères (rat, mouton). Elle travaillera dans un environnement disposant en outre de compétences sur l’apprentissage conditionné chez le rat. Le dispositif expérimental présent sur le Centre de Nouzilly permet l’élevage des oiseaux, les interventions chirurgicales, les études comportementales et neuroanatomiques.

La personne profitera des collaborations engagées avec des équipes françaises et étrangères travaillant sur le comportement des oiseaux et la neuroanatomie aviaire ainsi que sur la neurobiologie de la mémoire chez les mammifères.

Le centre de recherche se situe en Indre-et-Loire (37) à 30 km au Nord-Est de Tours.

Compétences recherchées

Postdoctoral position at the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research

Postdoctoral Fellowhip in Visual Neurophysiology at NIH.

Dr Bruce Cumming has a vacancy, available immediately, for a postdoctoral fellow to study responses of visual cortical neurons in awake behaving monkeys. The appointment is for up to 5 years. The experimental work centers around extracellular single unit recording in striate or extrastriate cortex, while presenting binocular stimuli to behaving animals.

The main themes of the work are

A) developing and testing mechanistic models to explain how signals about disparity are generated in cortex (e.g Haefner and Cumming, 2008).

B) Understanding, how in principle these signals might be used to compute depth (e.g. Read and Cumming, 2007).

And C) combining modern psychophysical techniques with single cell recordings and microstimulation to clarify how these signals influence perception (.e.g. Nienborg and Cumming, 2007).

The laboratory forms part of the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Resarch, a group of seven principal investigators with a common interest in primate neurophysiology and visual behavior. The group is well funded and offers state-of-the-art facilities, in a collegial atmosphere. There are opportunities to develop projects using multi- electrode recordings or monkey fMRI. There are also close links with the rest of the NIH’s sizeable Neuroscience program.

Neural Systems and Behavior (NS&B) courseat the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, MA

Neural Systems and Behavior (NS&B) is an intensive, 8-week laboratory/lecture summer course for pre- and postdoctoral students.

Up to three NS&B Course Assistants (CAs) work under the supervision of the two Course Directors. Duties include preparation of solutions, overseeing inventory, ordering supplies, assisting faculty, running errands, helping to organize social events, and many other diverse and important functions. Training is provided by MBL before the course begins. The CAs must be in residence between about June 11 and August 11, 2008. Hours are flexible but include late nights and weekends. Applicants should have at least 2 years of undergraduate training in biology or a related field. The positions require initiative, flexibility, organizational skills, basic familiarity with laboratory techniques, and the ability to work well with other people in an intensive environment.

Compensation includes weekly minimum salary of $400, room & board, and round-trip travel to Woods Hole.

Nitrogen deposition effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

Nitrogen (N) deposition is widely recognised as a major driver of global change and has been the subject of much research in recent years. Field manipulation experiments are invaluable for demonstrating the effects of global change on the diversity and functioning of ecosystems and there have been a number of studies aimed at evaluating ecosystem responses to changes in N deposition inputs throughout Europe. Knowledge of how different ecosystems respond to increases and decreases in atmospheric N inputs, as well as interactions with management and other global change phenomena, enables us to predict the magnitude of change expected under future environmental scenarios and to evaluate measures which might be used to protect essential ecosystem services in a changing world. This project will involve investigation of N deposition impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in a long term heathland manipulation study. A recent fire at the field site provides a unique opportunity to quantify the effects of N deposition on the recovery dynamics of vegetation and key ecological processes following a major perturbation. Additionally, the study will assess the speed of recovery from the effects of earlier N inputs, following suspension of experimental treatments in a sub-set of plots. Assessment of the biological and chemical impacts of N deposition in controlled, manipulation experiments allows us to develop potential indicators for widespread field evaluation of N deposition load and/or effect. A further part of this study will involve testing a range of potential indicators of N deposition inputs and ecosystem response in field surveys throughout the UK. This project will provide an opportunity for both field and laboratory work, with training in a wide range of ecological and biogeochemical techniques. The studentship will be based at Imperial College London’s Silwood Park campus, in Ascot, Berkshire. A full, clean driving licence is essential. Animateur scientifique

L'Espace des sciences est une association dont la vocation est de rendre accessible à tous les publics les connaissances scientifiques, techniques et industrielles, en suscitant curiosité, intérêt et questionnements. Depuis 20 ans elle propose des expositions et animations scientifiques au public rennais.

Pour sa nouvelle exposition temporaire, l'Espace des sciences recrute des personnes, placées sous la responsabilité des médiateurs de l'Espace des sciences, qui auront pour missions de :

- Présenter l'exposition et des ateliers scientifiques devant des publics variés : groupes scolaires (primaires, collèges et lycées), centres de loisirs, visiteurs individuels, familles...

- Participer à la maintenance et à l'entretien de l'exposition

Profil requis

Formation scientifique (bac +2 minimum) : physique, biologie, géologie... Bon niveau de culture générale et intérêt pour les sciences. Aisance dans les activités d'animation : élocution, gestion des groupes... Autonomie, dynamisme et réactivité.

Sous la responsabilité du coordinateur départemental, vous assurez l’animation d’activités (de culture scientifique et technique) et de projets de l’association sur le département des Côtes d’Armor. Missions principales

- Prendre en charge l’animation et la mise en place de projets pédagogiques et associatifs (ateliers scolaires, périscolaires, de clubs (loisirs) et ponctuels) selon les objectifs définis dans le plan de développement départemental de l’association (de nombreuses actions sur le thème de l’eau) ;

- Développer des animations à partir d’outils pédagogiques créées par l’association (livre d’expérience, exposition interactive, livret pédagogique) et contribuer à améliorer les outils existants (fiches, scénario d’animations, nouveaux projets d’animations, expositions), nécessaires au bon déroulement des animations et des activités de l’association ;

- Contribuer au travail d’équipe lors des manifestations organisées par les Petits Débrouillards et à la dynamisation de la vie associative (réunions d’animateurs, congrès, festivals, assemblées générales).

Profil du candidat

- Connaissances scientifiques souhaitées, goût pour les sciences, les découvertes

- Expérience exigée dans le secteur de l’animation (BEATEP et BAFA non exigé)

- Sens de la relation humaine et du travail en équipe, dynamisme, rigueur, esprit collaboratif, compétence à prendre du recul.

A vacancy exists for a full time Post-Doctoral Scientist – Social Behaviour of Farm Animals to work in the Centre for Animal Welfare at the Royal Veterinary College, Hatfield. The position is funded by the BBSRC and is on a fixed term contract commencing 1st February, 2008 to 31st July, 2010.

You will have a First Degree in biology, zoology animal or veterinary science. You will undertake research on the social behaviour of farm animals and co-design, set up and execute experiments on social behaviour and social cognition in pigs and poultry to meet the objectives of the BBSRC research project.

Research will be conducted at the Cranberry Lake BiologicalStation in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Field assistants will aid in mist-netting, banding, sampling blood for hormonal assays and parentage, behavioral observations, GPS/GIS, and song analyses. Previous experience desirable but not necessary; the only prerequisites are patience and persistence. Salary includes room, board, and a stipend.

AVICULTURE INTERNS wanted for the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program at the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) on the island of Maui. Managed by the Zoological Society of San Diego, the programs goals are to produce captive-reared endangered Hawaiian birds for release into the wild population. At MBCC we house and breed four species of endangered Hawaiian birds- the 'Alala, Nene, Maui Parrotbill, and the Puaiohi.

The Maui Bird Conservation Center is looking to fill various intern positions immediately.

Intern daily tasks include husbandry duties such as: diet preparation, aviary and facility maintenance, behavioral observations of breeding birds, grounds keeping, predator control.

Applicant must be able to live with several housemates in a remote area and should show enthusiasm for work with captive endangered birds. Applicant must have a valid driver's license and health insurance. Internships last for a 3-6 month period. Interns receive free housing and a daily stipend.

Field Assistants needed immediately for a community ecology

Field Assistants needed immediately for a community ecology / invasion biology study in the Samoan Archipleago

I am currently conducting field experiments on the influence of mutualisms between Morinda citrifolia (Nonu) and Anoplolepis gracilipes (Yellow Crazy Ant-an invasive insect in Samoa) on (i) the dynamics of the yellow crazy ant invasion of Samoa and (ii) the response of native plant and arthropod communities to the invader.

There are now positions available for field assistants for this project. I request that field assistants commit to work on this project for at least one month. However, this is an ongoing project, so interested applicants can work up to 6 months as a field assistant. Duties include assisting in the maintenance of plot-level manipulative experiments (including limited vegetation clearing), conducting surveys of ants, plants, and nectar excreting arthropods across the Samoan Archipelago, assisting with short-term behavioral ecology experiments, mapping vegetation dynamics, and collecting and sorting samples of arthropod communities.

Field assistants are expected to pay for their own travel expenses. However, I will pay for lodging and meals for all field assistants. Assistants should be comfortable working outside in the sometimes very hot and humid conditions common to tropical islands.

Position Description:
For an ongoing study on the behavioural ecology of bonobos, we are searching for one field assistant. The work of the assistant will include collection of data on the ecology and behaviour of bonobos at Lui Kotale, Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Currently, field work is focussed on one habituated community. Candidates are expected to contribute to ongoing projects by collecting behavioural data and field samples to supplement the work of other field workers (senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students).

Qualifications/Experience:
Essential requirements are high resistance to psychological and physical stress, and basic skills in collecting behavioural and ecological data. Field work requires long-distance walking (up to 30
km per day) and working time often exceeds 10 hours per day. Given the difficult terrain and the extreme climate, work demands not only physical fitness but also high motivation. The proximity to other persons can lead to psychological stress and candidates must be able to adapt to the extreme living conditions at the field site.

As most members of the research crew speak English, this language is usually sufficient for communication within the research team. However, for communication with local assistants skills in French and African languages such as Lingal are required and cadidates with such
skills will be preferred.

Salary/funding:
300 Euro per month

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
The project will cover all costs for visa and the expenses for domestic flights. It also contributes up to 800 Euro to the international return ticket. This money will be re-imbursed only AFTER successful completion of a 9 month term of appointment. The project provides food (a melange of local food and some western food) and offers lodging (in tents) at the field site. Note that expenses for food and lodging during stays in Kinshasa on the way in/out are NOT covered by the project. Expenses for private field equipment, medicinal supplies and insurances can NOT be covered by the project.

Project: The project will provide an opportunity to understand the quality aspects of feeds (physico-chemical, chemical and biochemical) in terms of the manufacturing process. Additional multidisciplinary aspects include nutritional evaluation and economic assessments arising from industrial scale manufacturing. The successful applicant will have a background in the Animal / Food / Nutritional Sciences, will learn to manage complex situations and will supervise others. Although the project addresses animal feeds, the principles and many of the methods are directly applicable to human foods.

Optimal Incubation Strategies in Birds: Parent and Offspring Responses

Background: Offspring depend on favourable conditions for successful development. Incubating birds face an interesting trade-off between self-maintenance and maintaining favourable egg temperature for optimal embryo development. It is usually thought that only parents provide the favourable thermal environment needed for optimal development of their offspring and this can be relatively costly to the parent, particularly when only one parent incubates. However, the offspring might also play an active role, for example by adjusting their own production of metabolic heat; such changes will have negative as well as positive consequences. To understand optimal avian incubation strategies, we really need to know how embryos respond to changes in conditions and this will be the main focus in this studentship.

Objectives: The studentship will look at how embryos respond to changes in incubation conditions using novel instrumentation that is able to record embryo heart rate non-invasively in the field. The student will design experiments to test a number of hypotheses.

Do females have to learn the significance of male sexual ornaments?

Sexual ornaments are often under sexual selection and can be used either in male-male contests or for attracting females. This project will examine why females prefer males that exhibit these exaggerated features, and what consequence this preference has for the investment made by males. A well-known example of such a trait is the "sword" of the green swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri): females prefer males with longer swords if the males are of equal body size. Basic models of sexual selection explain such a pattern in terms of indirect benefits: either the females mating with the most ornamented males gain "sexy sons" (in the Fisherian model), or survival benefits to their offspring ("good genes"). Both cases predict a rather strong genetic component to female mate choice because of the genetic correlation between the ornament and the preference for it. However, we have data to show that when green swordtail females are reared in female-only groups, and presented visually with only one male at a time, they do not develop these documented mate choice preferences (Walling, Royle, Metcalfe & Lindström, submitted). We suggest that the normal development of female preferences in this species requires an opportunity to observe males in their normal social setting where they can interact, and therefore give the female information on their social rank.

This studentship will test the novel hypothesis that the female preference for longer swords arises because it is a badge of social status. The project will involve experiments in which juvenile fish are reared in different types of social group, so that their exposure to interactions between males is tightly controlled. The mate choice decisions by females given different exposures to males will then be compared, along with information on the age at sexual maturation, investment by males in sexual ornaments, interactions between males of differing morphology, and performance of the offspring that result from different mate choice preferences.

Maternal homozygosity and egg production

Mating between closely-related individuals negatively affects individual fitness, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. This has attracted attention in a wide range of fields such as ecology, conservation biology, animal breeding and medicine. Egg hatchability in birds is one of the most commonly reported fitness traits affected by inbreeding, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Reduced egg hatchability can be affected by parental genetic similarity affecting genetic quality of the embryo and maternal homozygosity affecting the quality of parental care. Both factors could be involved but they could influence the outcome through different mechanisms.

Most studies have focused on how parental genetic similarity affects egg hatchability where the zygote accumulates deleterious alleles. Several studies have also demonstrated an effect of maternal homozygosity on egg hatchability independent of the accumulation of deleterious alleles in the zygote. Parental provisioning and care is affected by many genes and can be costly and, therefore is an excellent candidate for revealing negative effects of inbreeding on fitness. The aim is to experimentally tease apart the effects of maternal inbreeding on egg hatchability in zebra finches. Zebra finches readily accept closely related breeding partners and their female offspring can produce viable eggs. They provide an excellent opportunity for experimental studies on the effect of maternal homozygosity on egg hatchability.

Ammonia is an important part of the nitrogen cycle and seabird colonies represent the major source of atmospheric ammonia in remote coastal/marine systems. We estimate that Arctic and Antarctic sources together contribute >50% of global ammonia emissions from seabirds.

The project has the following objectives:

a) to prepare a first gridded inventory (0.5° x 0.5°) of global seabird emissions, using current estimates and databases of seabird populations;

b) to exploit new ammonia measuring techniques (including spectroscopic methods), combined with dispersion modelling to quantify emissions from individual colonies;

c) to develop the techniques at easily accessible Scottish colonies and then apply them under sub-Antarctic and/or Arctic conditions (collaboration with British Antarctic Survey);

d) to characterise the temperature dependence of ammonia emissions from guano, considering different nesting habits and utilizing controlled environment measurements;

e) to simulate the climatic dependence of seabird ammonia emissions and incorporate this in the global model, allowing effects of future climate change to be simulated.

The student will be based at CEH Edinburgh, and registered for a PhD with the Department of Geography, King's College London. The studentship will provide training in environmental physics, avian ecology and biogeochemistry. Techniques to be used will include field spectroscopic methods, atmospheric dispersion modelling, methods for recording seabird breeding biology and spatial modelling (databases, GIS).

Applicants should hold a relevant degree, with appropriate numerical skills. There will be a significant field component in remote locations.

The studentship provides a maintenance grant (starting at £13,230), due to funding restrictions only UK and EU applicants are eligible to apply for this studentship.
