PhD Position in Animal Behaviour: Sociality and Fission-Fusion Dynamics in Spider Monkeys

Applications are open for a 4-year PhD position at the Instituto de Neuroetologia, Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico). The PhD project will focus on the interplay between social interactions, social structure and subgrouping patterns in wild spider monkeys using a 20+year dataset. The successful candidate will receive a 4-year scholarship through a grant from the Mexican Secretariat SECIHTI.

This position is ideal for people with a strong interest in social behaviour, who hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field and are skilled at conducting statistical analyses with R. It is preferable that applicants are competent in managing large datasets and have knowledge of social network analysis and statistical modelling. The PhD thesis can be written in Spanish or English, but applicants should know sufficient Spanish to navigate the application process, including an entry exam.

To apply, please send your CV and a letter of interest highlighting the experience relevant to the preferable/required skills for the PhD project to Dr. Filippo Aureli (
faureli@uv.mx) and Edoardo Pietrangeli (pietrangeli.edoardo@gmail.com).

The application process is open to start the PhD in January 2026, but interested applicants should first contact us as soon as possible given that they need to submit a research protocol developed with the supervisors during the application process.
