Position Description:
Research assistant need for study of infant and juvenile white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus)social behavior at Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica.
Responsibilities:
(1) Daily collection of behavioral data
(2) Daily collection of fecal samples for genetic and hormone analysis
(3) Weekly lab processing of fecal samples for hormone analysis
(3) Monthly collection of phenology data
Research assistant will be expected to work up to 4-6 days per week, spending a minimum of 8 hours in the field, tracking 3 different monkey troops. Santa Rosa is located in a tropical dry forest, roughly an hour north of Liberia. There is electricity, running water, refrigeration, wireless internet, and easy access to the city for groceries, banking and other activities (e.g. an air conditioned movie theater). Costa Rica is a safe, stable, and environmentally progressive nation.
This project will run from June, 2010 until September 2011.
Qualifications/Experience:
Required:
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate an interest in primate behavioral ecology or a similar discipline. Positive attitude and strong work ethic are a must!
Preferred:
At least one year of completed undergraduate work. Previous experience at a field school or working on a biological field project.
Salary/funding:
No salary provided.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
At this time no support can be offered. Long-term applicants (3 months or more) are encourage to discuss possible funding opportunities with the PI.
Projected Costs:
Round-trip airfare from the USA, $600-$750
Lodging, $10 per day in park fees
Food, $200 per month
Internet, $30 per month
Term of Appointment:
Interested parties may apply for any term length ranging from 1 month to 12 months
