Symposium on Behavioural Responses to environmental change

We are very pleased to draw your attention to a session at SETAC Europe 2017 with the title: Unravelling behavioural responses to human - induced environmental change. The session is part of the main track: Ecotoxicology becomes stress ecology (from populations to ecosystems and landscapes). The meeting is held in Brussels, Belgium 7-11 May 2017. Details about submitting a proposal are available on the meeting website https://brussels.setac.org/. The deadline for abstract submission is 23 November 2016.  We hope to receive many fascinating abstracts and offer a platform to experts from different disciplines and career stages.

We are looking forward to a fruitful meeting in Brussels.

Unravelling behavioural responses to human - induced environmental change

Chairs: Minna Saaristo, Kathryn Arnold, Tomas Brodin

Today, almost all organisms on Earth live in habitats modified by the actions of humans. Legislators and the media often focus on death or severe reproductive malfunctions. However, animals that fail to forage efficiently, avoid predators or attract mates will accrue zero fitness.  Many studies show human-induced effects on behaviour that are predicted to affect fitness. For example, pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment can alter reproductive and foraging performance. Recently, it has been suggested that personality might play an important role in population-level adaptation to new or shifting environments. Behaviour, therefore, provides a sensitive, non-lethal biomarker of responses to environmental change, which in turn provides a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying behavioural variation. The main objective of this session is to offer a platform to experts from different disciplines and career stages who will provide insights into the behavioural responses of animals to environmental change  with an emphasis on chemical pollutants. We will focus on studies conducted at environmentally relevant concentrations and unravel behavioural end-points that are ecologically  and  evolutionarily relevant  to  fitness.

SPECIATION 2017, 19-24 February, Tuscany, Italy

We are pleased to announce that a preliminary program is now available for SPECIATION 2017, a Gordon Research Conference (GRC) dedicated exclusively to speciation research:

The conference --- the world's largest of its kind --- will be held at the Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa in Italy during the week of February 19-24, 2017. The conference will be directly preceded by a two-day Gordon Research Seminar (GRS), co-chaired by Amanda Hund and Laurel Symes, that offers opportunities for graduate students and early-career scientists to get involved at the forefronts of modern speciation research.

The GRC conferences on speciation raise to a trans-Atlantic level a tradition of international conferences on speciation research that was initiated by the European Research Networking Programme 'Frontiers of Speciation Research'. The three conferences held thus far, in 2010, 2013, and 2015, have helped facilitate bridge-building between disparate approaches to speciation research and have attracted hundreds of participants from all facets of speciation research.

Registration for SPECIATION 2017 is open at https://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?id=16903 and will continue until the venue's capacity is filled.

With many thanks and best wishes,

Åke Brännström & Rebecca Safran

Seminar

The "Ecology and Behaviour" seminar is an international scientific congress that distinguishes itself by the will clearly displayed to favour the participation of PhD and Post-doctoral students. The "Ecology and Behaviour" meetings are celebrating this year their twelfth anniversary. In today’s context of rapid degradation of ecosystems, developing high quality fundamental research in ecology and evolutionary biology is essential. Therefore, throughout this conference, we offer debates on ecology, evolutionary biology, and animal behaviour designed for young researchers (PhD students, post-doctoral researchers). The primary aim of the "Ecology and Behaviour" conference is to share information in a friendly atmosphere and to give time for discussion between each of sessions. Previous editions have encountered a growing success, where a hundred of participants presented their work either through an oral communication or a poster. These conferences give them the opportunity to promote their work and to create debates about various topics of research, which can lead to new questions. In addition, the international character of these conferences can inspire future inter-university collaboration. These conferences also provide PhD students with the possibility of building professional networks. Each of the six sessions proposed in the meeting will host two international specialists. Thus, participants will benefit from the presence of renowned researchers in a less formal atmosphere compared to usual conferences. Finally, unlike most congresses and symposium, no charge is asked to PhD students and post-doctoral students (including accommodation and lunches) if they participate through the presentation of a poster or an oral communication.
Deadline for abstract submissions: March 20th, 2016

Conference and Workshop on Social Network Analysis, 6th-8th January 2016

The EGI will host a Conference and Workshop on Social Network Analysis for students and early career researchers. The meeting will be held in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, from Wednesday 6th January – Friday 8th January 2016. Registration is free to all participants. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer financial support to cover travel or accommodation expenses. Booking or request for further details should be sent to SNAworkshop@zoo.ox.ac.uk by Friday, 27th November. The workshop will be limited to 15 participants; places will be filled in accordance with the first-come first-served principle.
This meeting aims to provide PhD students in the field of animal behavior with skills for understanding and applying SNA, as well as to foster exchange and discussion among a small group of early-career researchers. Depending on space availability, we might consider applications by early post-doc researchers as well.
The meeting will consist of a half-day conference followed by a two-day workshop on social network analysis (SNA). We are pleased to announce that Dr. Lucy Aplin will open the conference with a talk about her exciting work on social ecology of great tits and blue tits studied in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire. She has been studying social and ecological processes structuring group composition, and recently used social network analysis to investigate the spread of novel behaviours and animal culture in tit populations. Lucy is a Junior Research Fellow at St John’s College and member of the EGI. More information about her current and recent work can be found on her personal website: https://sites.google.com/site/lucymaplin/home
Conference attendees will have the opportunity to present and discuss their current projects, which may be in any state of completion. For example, participants might prepare a poster to introduce their study system, outline their proposed research questions, and discuss possibilities for using SNA once they have collected data. We ask all participants, who wish to present a poster, to prepare a very short presentation of three minutes (maximum of three slides), which should be designed to attract attention to the poster.
The 2-day workshop on January 7th-8th will be led by Dr. Damien Farine, Research Associate at EGI and Principal Investigator at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology Department of Collective Behaviour. Day 1 will cover fundamental theory of network analysis, and Day 2 will give attendees the chance to apply SNA software tools and use R to analyse either their own data or to work through provided examples. No previous experience with social network analysis is required to attend this course. For more information on the workshop, please visit Damien’s webpage: https://sites.google.com/site/drfarine/teaching/sna_workshop
The workshop will be based in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford. We will also organise some evening social events to give participants the opportunities to network both with each other and with researchers at the EGI.

Workshop in Erice (Sicily)

We are delighted to invite you to the International Workshop “ANIMAL AND HUMAN EMOTIONS” which will take place on May 17-22, 2016, in Erice, Sicily (Italy). The workshop will be held within the School of Neuroscience at the “Ettore Majorana” Erice Centre and is supported by the Italian government. Organizers: Pier Francesco Ferrari and Frans de Waal

The workshop will be held in Erice, in Sicily, a gorgeous ancient seaside city in Italy. There will be ample time in between sessions to explore the city and sample the local restaurants. The workshop will include an excursion into the countryside to visit ancient Greek temples.

The purpose of the Workshop is to highlight new perspectives on animal and humans emotions. Since Darwin’s seminal work of almost 150 years ago, scientists have debated why we express emotions, how we understand them in others and how emotions impact our choices and moral judgments. In the study of animal behavior, talk of emotions has long been taboo, followed by a time in which they were declared irrelevant. In the last few decades, this situation has changed, however, and animal emotions are more openly considered. Emotions can be seen as evolutionary adaptations to the environment, but also as an important process that provides the glue of social groups. Even though emotions are often lumped together with instincts, they are also critical in abstract reasoning, planning, and moral judgment. Modern technology requires the construction of robots and machines that either have some sort of emotional organization or communicate emotionally with us. Engineers will contribute to the workshop by elucidating how emotions are central in artificial intelligence. Most psychopathologies or neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with deregulation of emotional processes and therefore our comprehension of their role in development and in clinical populations is critical. This workshop will bring together leading figures in science who apply an evolutionary method and an interdisciplinary approach to the basic mechanisms of emotions in order to understand how they organize behavior. The workshop will foster discussion between scholars, students and researchers from different field of sciences: Ethology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Robotics, Anthropology.

The workshop is highly integrative and interdisciplinary. Thus, we encourage speakers to give a presentation addressed to a broad audience represented by different disciplines and within disciplines, by different levels of seniority (e.g., graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, junior and senior faculty). Once we have finalized the list of speakers, we will open a website to announce the meeting and open up registration for approximately 120 graduate students, postdocs, and other interested scientists.

Issues covered by the Workshop will be: 1. Neural mechanism of emotions, 2. Empathy and prosocial behavior, 3. Development, 4. Psychopathology, 5. Learning, 6. Artificial intelligence and emotions.
