Paid Research Assistant, Barbary macaque

 Hiring Organization:

Liverpool John Moores University (Dr Patrick Tkaczynski)

Date Posted:

12th April 2023

Position Description:

I am looking for 2 research assistants to work on a pilot project examining how the welfare and health of wild Barbary macaques varies across gradients of human exposure in Ifrane National Park, Morocco. The pilot project will run for three (3) months between June and August, during which you will have the opportunity to learn a range of techniques and protocols, including:

  • Behaviour data collection
  • Non-invasive hormone sample collection
  • Non-invasive assays of cognition and positive welfare

Work at the field site is physically and mentally demanding. The field site is between 1,400 and 2,000 m a.s.l. and weather conditions during the study period are expected to be very hot and dry. Hence, interested individuals should be physically fit. The field site is in the beautiful cedar and oak forest of the Atlas Mountains and it is close to the Moroccan imperial cities of Fez and Meknes.

The successful applicants will live in the town of Azrou in an apartment block with basic amenities including wireless internet access and hot water.

Qualifications/Experience:
  • Previous field experience (not necessarily with primates) is desirable. Applicants should:
  • Have a background and strong interest in primatology, behavioural ecology or related fields.
  • Have a sound knowledge of behavioural (e.g. scan and focal sampling techniques) data collection methods.
  • Be prepared for long days in the field in a challenging environment.
  • Be open-minded and independent, prepared to adapt to living in a foreign culture, and able to work as part of a team.
  • Being able to speak French/Arabic would be an advantage; being able to speak English is essential.
  • A valid driving license that is accepted in Morocco (i.e., UK or EU) is essential.

Salary/funding:

This is a paid position, with money also allocated to pay for return flights to the field site (the budget anticipates flights from the UK, if flying from other, more expensive destinations, the applicants may have to supplement the travel budget).

Term of Appointment:
Field work is set to commence in early June 2023 and will last for 3 months. Applicants must be able to work for the whole study period.

Application Deadline:
Review of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
