Main purpose of job:
The technician is responsible for effective implementation of experimental behavior evaluation protocols (feeding behavior and welfare) in cats and dogs. This includes experimental design, handling of pets for data collection, manipulation of large data files, and processing of results under supervision of a behavior scientist.
This encompasses ensuring alignment with the developed experimental test designs in close interaction with the pet facility colleagues, under minimal supervision.
Essential functions:
- Participate to protocol development for feeding behavior studies
- Execute the necessary experiments up to and including
close interaction with the pet facility to follow up with test organization and resource availability
preparation of the equipment
handling of cats and dogs
live and video data recording
video files handling and editing
video coding of behaviors
data organization
- Participate to drafting of results reports
- Successfully manage multiple experimental protocols simultaneously
- Participate to identification of equipment needs and equipment selection or development
- Organize/manage feeding behavior research equipment
- Conduct all activities in compliance with all required company policies and procedures
- Actively practice safety in the workplace
Additional responsibilities:
- Successfully develop and maintain good ways of working with the pet facility
- Proactively identify potential constraints, improvements in protocols, equipment and tools (with a focus on automation opportunities) to effectively complete the execution of the feeding behavior evaluations
- Participate to palatability studies protocol development, data interpretation and results communication in interaction with Product Development Teams under supervision of the feeding behavior scientist.

Key experience:
MS in Animal Behavior or related discipline; or corresponding level of experience (Technical University Diploma)
Good background in the use of research techniques (mandatory experience with video coding), experimental design
Good understanding of English and French – written and spoken

Knowledge:
Ability to run experimental protocols to evaluate animal behavior
Good sense of scientific research constraints and standards
Ability to understand scientific methodologies
Ability to organize research data into comprehensive data files
Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Understanding of tools for problem solving
