Field Assistant/Volunteer

Hiring Organization: Stony Brook University Doctoral Student

Position Description:
I will be working at two sites in the south east of Madagascar for three months (approx Sept 10th-Dec 10th). My project focuses on studying the behavior of Eulemur albocollaris (white-collared brown lemur) in terms of parasite loads. This means I will be collecting fecal samples daily in the forest as well as behavioral data.

This is the warm dry season in Madagascar and field conditions will be rough. We will be staying in tents near the forest with a campfire kitchen. Food will mainly consist of rice and beans three times a day. It will be hot and humid and we will be working 6 days a week for approximately 12 hours a day. If this does not sound like something you would enjoy please do not apply.

Qualifications/Experience:
There are no qualifications necessary. A background in biology, animal behavior, zoology, anthropology or a related field is a plus. Ability to speak French is also a plus but not necessary. Experience camping or traveling in the tropics is also a plus.

This is a great experience for someone interested in graduate school and/or field work. I am looking for someone that will be able to take over part of the data collection (after training) so that we can work in two separate teams to maximize data collection during this season.

Salary/funding:
None, you will be expected to pay for your own airfare and accommodations. Airfare from the states is around 2000$, although that may vary. In country costs will be around 500-700$. I will pay for in-country transportation and all in-country permits and fees. We can discuss gear etc.

Term of Appointment: Around September 10th-December 10th 2008

Application Deadline: August 1, 2008
