Postdoctoral position on collective cognition in animal groups, Princeton University

Postdoctoral research associate position on collective cognition in animal groups, to work with Professors Iain D. Couzin and Daniel I. Rubenstein in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position to explore, experimentally, how perception, learning and strategic decision-making enhance the capabilities of group-living animals. Due to their diversity of cognitive capabilities and social organization, and their suitability for both laboratory and field studies, this study will focus on fish, which offer a powerful opportunity to explore the relationship between individual-level cognition and effective collective response in a wide range of ecologically-meaningful contexts. The successful candidate will have access to brand new state-of-the-art experimental facilities (both freshwater and marine), including our sophisticated computational tracking, body posture and visual field reconstruction system. Embedded in a multidisciplinary research team, the candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with experts in computer vision and machine learning, as well as in biology, to explore sensory integration and decision-making in animal groups.

The appointment is for one year initially, with the possibility of renewal up to four years, based on satisfactory performance and funding. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and benefits are included. This position is available immediately and will be open until filled. This position is subject to the University's background check policy.

Education required: Doctorate Degree
Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in biology, psychology, biophysics or a related field. We particularly seek candidates who have experience with experimental research and quantitative investigation of animal behavior, and computational skills, while not essential, would be favorable. However applications from candidates with a strong quantitative background and keen interest to move into behavioral research will also be considered.

Applicants should apply online at https://jobs.princeton.edu to Requisition #1400458 and include a curriculum vitae, a one page statement of research interests and experience, and a cover letter with names and contact information of three referees.  Informal inquiries are welcome and should be sent to icouzin@princeton.edu, including a CV.
