CIEL has been invited
to work with AHDB Pork in assessing the impact of precision
technologies for pig production. AHDB intends to fund a series of
software and equipment hires over the next 3 years into:
- Licenses for pig herd management software (specifically to record the rearing/finishing herd from birth to slaughter and all management events in-between) and mobile barcode scanners
- EID readers (both UHF and LF - handheld/panel and abattoir readers on the kill line) as well as weigh cells and weigh head indicators
Collectively, it is
hoped that this support will facilitate data acquisition and sharing on
R&D farms (in England), that can underpin a subsequent funding
application via UKRI. Datasets will be further strengthened
through the provision of data from the wider AHDB Strategic Farms
network where the software and hardware will be applied, with this data
being made available to all project participants through data sharing
agreements. The aim of these purchases (and potentially
funded project) is to better support farmers to manage pigs and
identify novel trends/markers through data modelling that could add
value to levy payer business practices.
