We are offering two 4-year PhD positionsto study marmoset behavior and vocal communication at the Primate Stationof the Evolutionary Cognition Groupof the Department of Anthropology, University of Zurich. The candidates will be hired for the ERC project ENGINE–Engineering Interdependence: A Window into the Evolution of the Human Mind. Theoverallgoal of thisproject is to map the consequences of interdependence, a key trait of our species. We will therefore compare marmosetmonkeys that live in a social environment in which theirdependence on fellow group members is either extremely high or very low. We will investigate how this contrast affects synchronization at various levels (physiological with thermography, hormonal, behavioral and communicative),as well as performance in so-called big-C contexts (cooperation, communication, cognition & culture). The project will include behavioral observations and socio-cognitive tests as well as a broad range of noninvasive techniques, such as thermography, automated recording and classification of vocalizations and behavior, endocrinology, andrfid controlled tasks. Candidates with expertise in at least one of these techniques are particularly welcome to apply.Candidates should havea Msc degree or equivalent and a relevant training background in Biology, Psychology, or Evolutionary Anthropology. They will be part of the PhD program in Evolutionary Biologyof the University of Zurich. The start of the positionsis ideally in October 2021,or upon agreement. Please submit your application in a single pdf to judith.burkart@aim.uzh.ch,ideally until August 20, 2021.
