Assistant Professor, Physical Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for a tenure-track position in physical anthropology at the level of assistant professor beginning July 1, 2013. Research area is open, although the department recognizes its need for expertise in several fields that resonate with the department’s current strengths: bioarchaeology, multi-species anthropology, health and disease in living populations, and human migration. Active research projects with the potential for involving graduate students would be crucial to this position. The successful candidate will contribute to our emerging graduate program and also must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

RANK: Assistant Professor

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Anthropology or closely related field, completed by July 1, 2013. The successful candidate must present strong evidence of research activity and demonstrated potential for university teaching.

Position Description:

We are looking for volunteers to work in our ongoing project of release of chimpanzees, in the Conkouati Douli National Park, a long-term field site in in the Republic of Congo.

The volunteer will have the opportunity to work in an amazing area. The activities are:

- chimpanzees feeding

- preparation of meals for chimpanzees

- help to the veterinarian

- construction of infrastructure

- maintenance of infrastructure

- weekly report for our website

- data collection on chimpanzees

- work in our reforestation project

- participating in the release program...

The volunteer position is for 3 months minimum.

For a position of three months, you will be affiliated to the Sanctuary, to feed the chimpanzees and work in the plantation mainly.

For a position of more than three months (long term volunteer), you will be a field assistant affiliated to the Triangle Station, to assist with data collection for a project on behaviour in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

These affiliations can differ depending on the personnel available.

Going in the Triangle, in the middle of the jungle implies more preparation for the field, and a training that can not be provided for people staying only three months, except again, if help is needed in the Triangle station.

The volunteer will be trained before going in the field is possible, will learn to identify individual chimpanzees in a released community of chimpanzees. The assistant will work alongside an existing team of personnel, recording detailed behavioural observations.

This field work includes long-distance walking through very difficult terrain, long days work, sometimes from dawn to dusk, in all weather conditions.

This position will provide the successful applicant with an excellent opportunity to gain extended fieldwork experience with detailed behavioural research.

Qualifications/Experience:

- Preferred: Degree in primatology, zoology, biology...

- High motivation to work in all conditions

- Experience in Africa, animal behavioural research experience, primatology

- Knowledge of French

- Field experience, preferably in a tropical climate

- Above average physical fitness and tolerance of demanding physical conditions and resistance to social and psychological stress

- Ability to live in a very remote and basic camp, far from the family

- Ability to work with an international and local team

- Strong social skills and patience

- High degree of self-motivation and responsibility

- Respect for and willingness to adapt to local customs

- Respect for the project you will work for

- If possible, practical and technical skills required for orientation and navigation in the forest (GPS, compass)

Salary/funding:

There is no salary.

Fees: the applicant has to pay 450 euros per month plus the visa, the flight.

However, once you are in the field site, food and house are offered.

For applications of more than 6 months, 'free stays' is offered after the 6 first months paid. Then you will be able to stay for free and your food and accommodation will be covered

Flight, visa, personal expenses are not covered by the project.

PhD Position in Evolutionary Genetics / Adaptive Evolution

The laboratory of Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution in Vertebrates, leaded by Juan Montoya-Burgos, Department of Genetics and Evolution, University of Geneva, seeks for a PhD candidate with a strong interest in evolutionary biology and advanced knowledge in molecular techniques, gene expression analysis and/or DNA-sequence analyses.

RESEARCH PROJECT:

A significant part of the functional diversity of life on earth is thought to have evolved through multiple bursts of adaptive speciation. The process of adaptive evolution is therefore central in the field of evolutionary biology and the understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying the evolution of adaptive traits remains a challenging task.

This project is aimed at investigating the evolution of genes that are involved in adaptive responses. The candidate will analyze the transcriptomes established in our laboratory to identify and characterize genes involved in the evolution of adaptive traits and to determine whether particular biological processes are enriched in positively selected genes. The candidate will establish correlations between the emergence of positively selected mutations and particular phenotypes. The role played by lineage-specific positively selected genes will also be assessed, in particular by the analysis of the expression pattern of non-annotated positively selected genes. To these aims, the candidate will participate in the development of new combinations of state-of-the-art techniques to obtain homologous DNA sequences of interest in a large panel of closely related species.

We will use as model organism the Loricariinae catfish subfamily as it is highly diversified in terms of morphology, ecology, behavior, and in number of species.

This project is founded by a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grant.

The Department of Genetics and Evolution hosts research groups working on regulation of vertebrate development (Denis Duboule), artificial and natural evolution (Michel Milinkovitch), molecular phylogeny of protists (Jan Pawlowski), developmental and molecular biology of sensory systems in mammals (Ivan Rodriguez), development and regeneration in Hydra (Brigitte Galliot), regulation of development in Drosophila (François Karch), sex determination and early development in Drosophila (Daniel Pauli).

Ideal candidates will have a Ms degree in biology with a specialization in evolution, developmental genetics, or phylogenetics, should be experienced in laboratory techniques (e.g. DNA, RNA extraction, PCR and RTPCR, DNA sequencing, cDNA library, cloning, In Situ Hybridization), with advanced skills in DNA sequence analysis and in gene expression analysis. The position is initially for three years. The selected candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral program Ecology & Evolution (http://biologie.cuso.ch/ecologie-evolution/welcome)

Research Associate in Developmental Psychology

The postholder will join a programme of research investigating children’s social learning and innovation.

The post is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for 30 months (full-time) and has a main emphasis on testing children’s social learning and innovation through the use of artificial fruits. The grant is held in collaboration with Prof Luc-Alain Giraldeau (University of Quebec, Montreal) and the postholder will have the opportunity to visit Prof Giraldeau’s lab as well as to take part in international conferences.

Candidates will be expected to hold an Undergraduate degree in Psychology or a related discipline (2i or above), and able to demonstrate strong research potential. This post will also require the holder to complete and be successful in acquiring an Enhanced CRB check.
