Volunteer field assistant, Pig-tailed macaques, Peninsular Malaysia

Position Description:
We are looking for field assistants for a long-term project investigating the migration patterns and behaviour of pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina).
The study will be conducted in the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve, Perak, Peninsular Malaysia. The work of the field assistant will include radio-tracking and behavioural data collection on the macaques as well as faecal sample collection for hormone and genetic analyses.

Qualifications/Experience:
Bachelor in anthropology, biology, ecology or any other relevant field is required.
The language in our team will be English and German but the willingness to learn basic Bahasa Malaysia is expected.
Previous field experience is welcome but not required.
Experience of working in tropical conditions under demanding physical exercise is helpful as monkeys are followed from dawn to dusk (about 12h a day; 5 days a week) in a tropical rain forest.

In general, applicants should:
- be physically fit and mentally strong with very good social skills
- be able to work independently within our team
- feel comfortable living under basic conditions and being far away from family/friends
- be willing to adapt to a foreign culture
- be emotionally mature, friendly, energetic and very patient

The main focus of our lab is to shed light on the role that natural selection has played in the evolution of humans and other primates. More specifically, we are interested in assessing the influence of natural selection across primate genomes, in the identification and characterization of selection targets, and in understanding the phenotypic consequences of selected variants. The specific project is somewhat flexible, but will broadly address the influence of natural selection in genomes, individuals, populations, or species. For example, the project may take advantage of the high-quality genome-wide datasets of several populations and species we have access to, both through external collaborations and in-house data production.

We are seeking a creative and highly motivated individual with prime interest in population genetics/genomics and evolutionary biology. Candidates should have a PhD in evolutionary biology, population genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, or related disciplines. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least one of the areas above, and a strong interest in the others. Previous work in population genetics/genomics (theoretical or analytical), experience with large-scale databases, and strong programming skills are a plus.

The Department of Evolutionary Genetics is a lively, stimulating, and highly collaborative place at the front of primate evolutionary genomics (http://www.eva.mpg.de/genetics). The Institute is very international and English speaking. It is located in Leipzig, a nice and affordable city of 500,000 habitants that is the capital and major cultural center of German Saxony. POSITION 2PhD Position: MHC Variation in Wild Chimpanzees

A PhD position is available within the molecular genetics group (http://www.eva.mpg.de/primat/files/genetics.htm) in the Primatology Department at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. This project will use next generation sequencing of DNA from noninvasive samples to characterize variation at multiple loci of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in wild chimpanzees. The degree of functional diversity in individuals will be assessed and compared among communities, populations, and subspecies. This project does not involve field research, but will incorporate use of data and fecal samples from wild chimpanzees that are the subjects of long term observation by collaborators in the field.
This position falls within the Leipzig School of Human Origins (http://imprs.eva.mpg.de/start.html), a joint graduate program of the University of Leipzig (Germany) and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. This program provides interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for university graduates who wish to work towards a Ph.D. in anthropology, biology, evolutionary genetics, primatology, paleoanthropology and related fields. Our graduate school is conducted in English, open for international students and designed as a 3-year-program with a research focus and a limited amount of formal classwork.

Qualifications/Experience: We invite applications from all countries. Applicants should have a Master's degree before the start of the program. Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is not required but international students have the opportunity to take free German courses. For this project a background and keen interest in molecular biology laboratory analyses is an advantage and knowledge of primates is helpful but not necessary.

Salary/funding: Ph.D. students are supported for the duration of their PhD by tax-free stipends of approximately 15,000 Euro per year. There are no tuition fees, and low cost health insurance is available. Leipzig is an attractive city with readily available housing and a relatively low cost of living.

POSITION 3 Field assistant or PhD position

Title: Behavioral Ecology and Spatial Cognition in the Aka hunter-gatherers
Hiring organization: Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI EVAN)

Position Description:
We are looking for a candidate for a project on the spatial cognition and knowledge of the Aka hunter-gatherers of the Central African Republic.

The project will be carried out in the broader frame of improving our understanding of the natural spatial skills requires for foraging in the tropical forest ecology of modern hunter-gatherers. This project is a joint collaborative project of Christophe Boesch with Barry Hewlett of Vancouver (USA). The candidate will be primary responsible of mapping food resources in the Aka territory and follow individuals during their daily forays in the forest.

Work Schedule:
- Preparation: approximately 2 weeks at the MPI EVAN
- Data collection: First field trip of 4 months in CAR is planned but is dependent upon the progress of the data collection.
- Analysis at the MPI EVAN

Qualifications/Requirements:
MSc (or comparable degree) in Behavioral Ecology or Anthropology. Sound field experience in the tropics, botanical knowledge, developed experience with GIS and GPS techniques will be favored. The field work requires good physical condition, the ability to work independently and under remote conditions. Good French speaking abilities are required.
If the qualification is there and the first field experience is completed to satisfaction, a Ph.D. on spatial cognition in the Aka hunter-gatherer could be envisioned.

Position Description: full-time Post-doctoral researcher position (24 months) to investigate the mechanisms underlying information transmission in flies. The successful candidate is expected to spend a considerable amount of time to model artificial social networks and observed social networks from different tested groups of flies in order to know how the structure of the social network influence the speed of information transmission and temporal stability of traditions in Drosophila. Using multi-agent systems, the successful candidate will test different properties of observed and theoretical networks on a Markov chain process of diffusion.

Qualifications/Experience:

Required: We invite applications from students holding (or expecting to obtain prior to September 2012) a PhD in Bioinformatics with a strong expertise on social networks and animal societies or in Biology/Anthropology with a strong expertise on modelling and Graph Theory. Previous experience analyzing behavioural and diffusion/social data will be highly advantageous. Applicants should moreover be proficient in written and spoken English, have excellent social skills, and be able to work both independently and in a large, interdisciplinary team.

Beneficial: Matlab, JAABA, Ctrax, basic knowledge of French.

Salary/funding:
The salary will be in accordance with French national regulations for post-doctoral researchers and amounts to about 3996euros per month (fully charged, i.e. about 2200euros net basic salary).

Summary of the DrosoNet Project

Understanding the link between individual behavior and population organization and functioning has long been central in ecology and evolutionary biology. Behavior is a response to intrinsic and extrinsic factors including individual state, ecological factors or social interactions. Within a group each individual can be seen as part of a network of social interactions varying in strength, type and dynamic. The structure of this network can deeply impact the ecology and evolution of individuals, populations and species. Within a group social transmission of behavior can take many forms and may deeply affect individual’s fitness. Social learning has been studied mostly in fish, birds and mammals including humans. In insects, social learning has been unambiguously demonstrated in social Hymenoptera but this probably reflects limited research effort and recent evidence show that even non-eusocial insects such as Drosophila can copy the behavior of others. Compared to individual learning, which requires a trial and error period in every generation, social learning can potentially result in stable transmission of behavior across generations, leading in some species to cultural tradition. Despite the potential importance of social transmission on animal behavior relatively little is known about the processes which may facilitates or prevent this transmission and the relationship between social network structure and efficiency of social transmission. The goal of this project is to study the genetic and socio-environmental factors affecting social transmission with the integration of experimental approach and social network analysis. Both will be synthesized in a hierarchical modeling approach allowing predictions on the pattern of social information flow based on the social network structure. More specifically DrosoNet focuses on the mechanisms of information transfers that generate social learning. The originality of the program is to integrate complementary approaches (behavioral and social) devoted traditionally to very distinct biological models characterized by strongly divergent group organizations. This approach can help us identify patterns of social interaction (including how they change with time) that can lay the foundation for understanding key components of social transmission, in order to understand at a global scale the emergence of tradition ?.

Using Drosophila as an experimental model system the project will investigate (1) how the structure of a group affects social transmission; (2) how individuals treat different source of information (in particular personal vs. social information), and (3) the genetic bases of social learning ability. Importantly we aim to understand whether a relationship between social network structures and dynamic can reflect the efficiency of social transmission, i.e. can we use social network analysis in order to predict social transmission of information and ultimately the evolutionary trajectory of a group?

3 postdoctoral positions in insect visual neuroscience, Newcastle University's Institute of Neuroscience, UK


I'm recruiting 3 postdocs to work on a 5-year research programme funded by a Research Leadership Award from the Leverhulme Trust. The programme will investigate stereo 3D vision in an insect, the praying mantis. It will involve visual psychophysics, electrophysiology and computational modelling. I am looking for one postdoc with expertise in insect neurophysiology to run visual electrophysiology experiments, a second to run behavioural experiments, and for a scientific programmer to support the research programme. All three positions are funded for 5 years and will be in the lively environment of Newcastle University's Institute of Neuroscience in the beautiful north east of England.

Qualités requises : être intéressé(e) par la recherche en cognition animale et tout particulièrement en cognition sociale ; être sérieux, rigoureux, ponctuel, rapidement autonome, et aimer le travail en équipe.

Description : Le Delphinarium du Parc Astérix souhaite poursuivre les travaux débutés l’an dernier sur la communication interspécifique homme-otaries. En effet, un premier travail élaboré par une étudiante du Master, Raphaelle Malassis, puis poursuivi par un étudiant d’Anglia Ruskin University a permis de montrer que les otaries généralisent spontanément leur réponse à un pointage humain explicite à des gestes plus ou moins altérés, et qu’elles comprennent la nature référentielle du pointage humain. Nous voudrions aller plus loin dans la compréhension de ces phénomènes et des processus cognitifs sous-jacents chez cette espèce.
Nous invitons donc les candidats intéressés à consulter la bibliographie déjà existante et à nous proposer une étude novatrice ainsi qu’un premier protocole expérimental.

Conditions de travail : du lundi au vendredi (9h-17H30), accès au restaurant d’entreprise.

Durée: deux mois (stage de Master 1)

Indemnité mensuelle : aucune. Les travaux précédents font l’objet d’une publication scientifique. Nous espérons que pour ce travail il en soit de même.
