The Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks an outstanding instructor-researcher in the area of animal welfare and/or applied animal behavior at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Duties:
The successful candidate will beexpected to develop a teaching program at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to develop a national and international reputation for scholarly advancements in teaching and learning in the field of animal welfare or animal behavior. The candidate will also develop an innovative, extramurally fundedresearch program in agricultural animal welfare and/or applied animal behavior. A desirable focus could bethe biological and societal implications for animals managed by humans.
Teaching duties include primary responsibility to develop a new undergraduate course in Animal Behavior and Wellbeing. In addition, teaching in the Introduction to AnimalSciences course, teaching in the capstone course for senior Animal Sciences majors, and participation in advising Animal Sciences undergraduates are expected.
The position carries a commitment to resident instruction, research, and outreach/service, aswell as professional and university service as appropriate to the position and rank.
 

Additional Information
The Department of Animal Sciences has resources for research programs with livestock and poultry species along with facilities to house these species for research on and off campus. In addition, housing for small animal laboratory species exists within the Animal Science Building. The new Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery (MSABD) facility provides excellent opportunities for efforts focused on animal welfare and animalbehavioral research during
the pre-harvest and its impact on postmortemphysiology, food safety, and meat quality.
The Teaching Academy at UW-Madison has excellent programs for faculty on how to implement proven strategies for
engaging students, design of class to utilize blended or on-line approaches yet have assessable goals and outcomes,
and development of teaching as a scholarly activity so that it can form a basis for tenure.

Volunteer Research Assistant position at the Kalahari Mole-rat Project

The Research
We are looking for several volunteer research assistants to carry out exciting experiments with captive  Damaraland  mole-rats,  Fukomys  damarensis,  at  the  Kuruman  River  Reserve  in  the South African Kalahari Desert.
Broadly,  our  research  investigates  the  influence  of genes,  hormones  and  social  factors  on  individual developmental, growth and behaviours.  We are  also interested in characterizing the  differences between breeding and non-breeding individuals
What you can gain from this role
This  position  is particularly suited, but not exclusively, for people aiming to carry on  their  academic  education  or  a  management  position  in  a research  project.  Successful  applicants  can  expect  to  gain invaluable  experience  in  animal  handling  procedures  and  in conducting  and  managing  experiments.  They  will  also  gain database  skills  (MySQL)  and  will  be  provided  with  the opportunity to work on a personal analysis project using the data available  in  our  existing  database.  Costs  of  food  and accommodation  while  at  the  project  will  be  covered.  A contribution  towards  travel  costs  will  be  made  (300 Euros/Year)
Candidate requirements
Applicants should be available for a period of 6 to 12 months. They should be hardworking, enthusiastic, physically fit, and prepared for long hours in the laboratory. Successful applicants will  be  responsible  to  run  experiments  and  will  be  involved  in  data  collection  (behavioural observations, collection of biological samples), data editing and animal handling. Working weeks will not exceed 45 hours.

2nd volunteer position, Research assistant Kalahari Mole-Rat Project

The Research

Position(s) as station and as research managers (starting in July 2019) at the striped mouse project in South Africa

We are looking for an extremely motivated and independent biology student with a master’s degree to join the striped mouse project in July (latest September) 2019 at least until November 2020 and for a maximum of 3 years as research or as station manager. This position is suitable for somebody who would like to gain experience in field work and scientific management. Managers get free accommodation at the station and a compensation to cover their daily costs. Travel costs can be refunded by up to an additional R 15 000 / year. As such, the position compensates for all arising costs but does not represent a legal employment.

The research manager and the station manager work closely together and both managers share many responsibilities. However, each will have specific main duties, but should also be able to deal with all other duties (for example when the other manager is on leave, or when a new manager has to be trained). The new manager will be instructed by the present managers.

Skills needed: Good experience in field work and good knowledge of behavioural ecology or a similar field of research. Experiences in working with small mammals, radio-tracking, blood sampling, living at a remote location are of advantage. Handyman skills are of advantage and needed for the station manager position.

You must be hard-working, highly motivated, able to work independently, good in communicating with people, able to supervise others, and not afraid of snakes. You must have a drivers licence and you must love to live at a remote place in nature, without regular internet and cell-phone reception. Most importantly, you are fascinated by nature and science!

Great opportunity: This is a great opportunity to spend 1.5-3 years in Africa, acquiring important skills in field biology and project management, while improving your CV. These skills will become valuable whether you later continue with a PhD or other jobs. It will be very hard and demanding, but also a once in a life time experience!

Job description: Five working days a week (Mo, Tue, Thu, Fr, Sat), with Wednesday being used for a shopping trip to town (not counted as working day) and Sundays being free. Included are four weeks of holiday for 12 months, which has to be taken outside the main breeding season (so not during August to November) and during periods when the other manager is present at the research station (the two managers cannot be on leave at the same time).

Compensation:

·         Free accommodation.

• A monthly compensation of R 4 700, which is sufficient to pay all costs of living.
• For travel costs, R15 000 per year can be refunded, but proof (receipts) must be presented for this. This refund is only payable after October 2020 and will not be paid if the person leaves earlier than agreed.
• You will become an honorary researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in the group of Prof. N. Pillay.
• Scientific co-authorship will be possible if the manager contributes to the success of projects by not only collecting the majority of data, but also by data analysis and writing of the manuscript.

Responsibilities:

·         The manager has to cover the costs to get to the station, including travel costs and visa fees. For this, a refund can be paid (see above).

• The manager needs to arrange for a health insurance covering him / her during the stay. A copy must be sent to C. Schradin before travelling to the stations.

Place and project: Succulent Karoo Research Station (SKRS) in the Goegap Nature Reserve near Springbok in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The research projects are on the socio-ecology of small mammals, studying ecological and physiological reasons of social behaviour, behavioural flexibility, cognition, and physiological adaptation.

Period: The new manager is expected to start in July or latest September 2019 and to stay at least until the end of November 2020 (end of the breeding season). The agreement might be extended for a total period of up to 3 years.

Research internship: Vocal learning and interactive communication in harbour seal pups

A 3-month Research Intern position is open for application at the Sealcentre Pieterburen, The Netherlands. The successful candidate will join the ‘Seal Sounds’ team and actively perform bioacoustics research with newborn harbour seal pups (usually 1-3 weeks old) under the supervision of Dr. Andrea Ravignani (https://ravignani.wordpress.com). The project will investigate how harbour seal pups time their calls interactively with conspecifics and learn sounds from each other, as part of a larger Belgian/EU project on pinniped communication. The candidate will receive training in pinniped behaviour, bioacoustics, experimental design, etc. Apart from hands-on research with the pups, depending on the interests of the candidate, there will be possibilities to work on other research projects, and help as an assistant seal nurse in the daily care of the pups.

Qualifications: Bachelor or Master degree in any of the following (or related) disciplines: Biology, Psychology, Zoology, Animal Behaviour, Marine Biology, Neurosciences, Psychobiology, Cognitive Sciences, Speech and Language Sciences, Sound engineering, etc.

Necessary skills: Crucially, the candidate must (1) have a working command of English, (2) be enthusiastic about research in animal behavior and communication, and (3) be willing to work hard. Previous experience with animals, audio recordings and/or playback experiments is not needed but appreciated. 

Location & accommodation: The Sealcentre (www.zeehondencentrum.nl) is located in Pieterburen, which is a small town in a natural area of the Netherlands. At any point in time, it hosts tens of international students, young volunteers, and veterinarians, all interested in seals. The university town of Groningen (200,000 inhabitants) is less than an hour away. If needed, cheap onsite accommodation with other students and volunteers can be arranged.

Financial matters: This is an unpaid internship.
