Position Description:
I am looking for a research assistant to help with the collection of data for my Phd project on Propithecus coquereli (Coquerel’s sifaka) in Madagascar. My project focuses on the effect of habitat edge on the behaviour and ecology of this species in Ankarafantsika National Park, in Northwest Madagascar.
The applicant will be responsible for collecting a wide range of data for this project including demographic surveys, phenological and vegetative sampling of tree species, ranging behaviour using GPS, and daily activity patterns of the lemur groups using focal animal sampling. The work is demanding with 7 days working and one day off. We will work very early hours some days including four 12-hour days each week. The climate is very hot and dry, and there will be a great deal of walking involved. The applicant should be comfortable working within a group setting, with local guides (some who may not speak English or French), and on their own. Within the field site we live in tents on covered tent platforms, there is cold running water (showers, toilets, and wash basins) and electricity.

Qualifications/Experience:
•BA or BSc in Anthropology, Biology or related discipline (not required if you have previous field experience).
•Prior field experience and/or travel experience in developing countries is an asset.
•Prior experience with behavioural sampling will be an asset, however for those keen to learn, this is also a good opportunity to gain experience.
•Proficiency in English is essential and French language skills would be helpful but are not required.
This project requires the applicant to be in good physical and mental condition. Field work can be very isolating and the applicant must be comfortable living away from home. I am looking for someone who enthusiastic about research, primate conservation, and is capable or taking direction while also able to make sound decisions on their own. Since the applicant will be working in a group setting it is essential that they are amiable and easy going.

Salary/funding:
The applicant must pay their own way to and from the field site, including their airfare and ground transportation. They must cover their own immunizations, health insurance, personal gear, and clothing, in country visa, and any other personal expenses or items they will bring. The applicant must cover their food and lodging while not in the park.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging): Once at the park I will cover all meals, camping fees, park permits and guides.

Term of Appointment:
I am looking for someone to start work at the park between September 1st and 15th 2008 and to finish on Nov 15th 2008. Any personal travel should take place before or after these dates.
