Volunteer field assistant for saki monkey research project

Position Description:
This project is investigating intergroup encounters in white-faced saki monkeys (Pithecia pithecia) at Brownsberg Nature Park, Suriname, South America. The assistant would be required to do all-day follows on one of three habituated groups (6 days/week), sometimes in conjunction with other researchers, sometimes independently. Data collection includes focal animal samples and scans detailing feeding, social behavior, activity budgets, and collection of fecal samples on females (no handling of the animals required).

Qualifications/Experience:
Previous experience doing fieldwork preferred or a graduate of a qualified field course. Early mornings and the ability to handle field conditions with good humor is required! A 4 to 5-month commitment is desired. Please submit 3 letters of recommendation (submitted by email to M. Norconk:mnorconk@kent.edu and C. Thompson:cthomps9@kent.edu). Two must be from academic sources.

Salary/funding:
None currently available. Living expenses in a research building at the field station are approximately $12/day and food is roughly $6-$10/day. Assistant would also need to pay for a flight to Paramaribo (the capital of Suriname = c. $1,000), as well as transportation to the field site (c. %50), and any other recreational expenses incurred.

Term of Appointment:
Two possible seasons (somewhat flexible): Nov 2008- March 2009; April 2009-July 2009.
