PhD Position in Dog Cognition

Applications are invited for a PhD position tocognitive neuroscience (Prof. Lamm), comparative cognition (Prof. Huber) and medical physics / biomedical engineering (Prof. Windischberger). Title of the project, funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Funds (WWTF): “Convergent evolution of the social brain? A comparative dog-human fMRI approach”.

This PhD project is embedded in the Comparative Cognition unit of the Messerli Research Institute (head: Prof. Ludwig Huber) at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, which includes, among other labs, the Clever Dog Lab Vienna (https://www.vetmeduni.ac.at/en/messerli/science/cognition/canines/dogs-clever-dog-lab/#c23042). See also https://www.vetmeduni.ac.at/en/messerli/science/cognition.

Anyone with a M.Sc. degree, interested in comparative cognition and in particular in (f)MRI scanning of dogs is invited to apply. Applicants must have a solid background in non-human behaviour and cognition, in particular of dogs. Ideally, they also have some neuroimaging experience.

The post holder will conduct both behavioural tests and fMRI on dogs. The dogs are specifically trained (by a professional animal trainer) to lie motionless and without any sedation or major restrains in the scanner, while they engage in social neuroscience paradigms. See https://ccnu.univie.ac.at for more details on the research team and facilities.

Vienna offers a thriving and highly international research community in neuro- and cognitive sciences. Working language will be English. Vienna has been voted the city with the highest quality of live for several years now.

The post-holder will be employed at the University of Veterinary Medicine

Application deadline: September 27, 2019
Preferred starting date: October 2019, but this is somewhat negotiable.
Level of employment: 30 hours
Duration of employment: 3 years (fixed term)
Research Area: Comparative Cognition
Salary: in lien with collective bargaining treaty (gross monthly salary around 2.150 k€, 14 x).
