Research Staff Assistant

 The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s new Manhattanville campus.

The El-Shamayleh lab at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute studies how the brain analyzes visual information. We are currently seeking a part-time employee to assist with animal behavioral training and other daily duties. The employee will participate in various aspects of daily experiments under close supervision from the PI and/or more senior lab members.

Candidates with a strong academic background in science and/or large animal research experience are encouraged to apply.

This is part-time position with the possibility of transitioning to full-time in the future. The Research Staff Assistant role is a grant-funded role and continued employment is contingent on the availability of funding by the Lab. 

Responsibilities

  • Performs animal husbandry and behavioral training of large vertebrates.
  • Assists in the preparation of procedures.
  • Keeps lab records and provides general lab organization.
  • Performs other laboratory setup duties as assigned by the PI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors in neuroscience, biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 6 months of related experience in a research environment
  • Experience working with animals in research, veterinarian, or zoo setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform work in an orderly manner in accordance with safety regulations and standard lab protocols.
  • Must be flexible in nature and exhibit a willingness to learn new techniques and function in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, keep excellent notes, and work well within a diverse and dynamic team environment.
