Announcement for a fully-funded PhD position (3 years, 30 h/pw) in cricket and bush-cricket bioacoustics and biomechanics at the Institute of Biology, University of Graz, Austria.
Crickets and bush-crickets use their wings to produce surprisingly loud songs to attract mating partners. The project aims to understand how the morphological structure, biomechanical processes and material properties influence the acoustic properties – the tuning – of these wings. The successful applicant will be working with a variety of methods ranging from sound recordings to laser Doppler vibrometry, AI-supported motion tracking and mathematical modelling. The applicant should therefore have a strong background in bioacoustics and digital signal processing. Additionally, a keen interest in the biomechanics of sound production and enthusiasm for working with insects will be beneficial.
The project start date is mid-July but the start of the PhD is open to negotiation and the position will stay open until filled.
