Chimpanzee Caregiver Needed

Freedom for Great Apes is a sanctuary specifically designed to provide a safe haven dedicated to the physical, social, behavioral, and psychological well-being of chimpanzees in captivity. We are dedicated to overcoming exploitation and cruelty that all captive great apes face with education, advocacy, and collaboration.

Position: Carestaff provides high-quality care to chimpanzees in a safe and secure manner while working in a team environment. The caregiver reports to the Operational Manager and works closely with other caregivers, volunteers, and leadership.

Job Duties include:

  • Cleans and disinfects chimpanzee indoor and outdoor enclosures daily.

  • Prepares and serves chimpanzees' meals; administers chimpanzees' vitamins and medications as directed.

  • Safely transfers chimpanzees to and from various areas within the facility and unlocks enclosures for regular cleaning and maintenance.

  • Launders bedding and toys for the chimpanzees.

  • Develops, constructs, and prepares daily enrichment for the chimpanzees.

  • Maintains work areas and equipment in a clean, sanitary and organized matter.

  • Maintains common staff and volunteer areas to be clean and user friendly. 

  • Records and evaluates chimpanzees’ physical, social, and psychological wellness.

  • Maintains landscape, yards, and garden. 

  • Contributes to a positive and professional organizational culture that promotes Freedom for Great Apes values, mission, and vision.

  • Contributes to outreach and educational programs.

  • Assists with facility maintenance projects, infrastructure repair and upkeep.

  • Maintains paper and electronic records and reports and ensures thorough documentation of daily activities.

  • Abides by established safety protocols at all times; strictly follows all COVID-19 safety protocols.

  • Maintains an annual tuberculosis test and seasonal influenza vaccine schedule.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Animal care experience preferred

  • Have a philosophy of animal care and animal respect that blends with FGA’s mission.

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Able to perform strenuous/manual labor; able to lift 50lbs.

  • Able to engage in climbing and aerial structure maintenance. 

  • Be willing and able to follow all safety policies and protocols. 

  • Work well with a variety of people.

  • Strong communication and listening skills.

  • Able to follow detailed instructions.

  • The right person must work well with others, have a positive attitude, and be fully dedicated to the care of the chimpanzees.

  • Experience with basic maintenance tasks and grounds-keeping.

  • Carpentry, welding and maintenance skills preferred.

  • Valid driver’s licenses.

Hours/Days: full-time position (40 hours a week); days of the week may vary.  Weekend shifts, holiday shifts and evening hours required; schedule subject to change.
