The Tropical Conservation Institute at Florida International University is seeking one or more candidates to serve as Postdoctoral Fellows working in fields related to tropical wildlife conservation. Candidates who have developed conservation research and/or applied-conservation projects with a results-oriented focus are encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include species- and ecosystem-level conservation, wildlife disease/health, conservation medicine and interventions to thwart illegal wildlife trade; however, we welcome applicants working in other areas of applied wildlife conservation. Successful candidates are expected to develop high-impact conservation projects that will tangibly contribute to the preservation of endangered species and high-priority biodiversity areas.

Appointments will have a term of one year and are renewable contingent upon excellent performance. Applicants from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply. Candidates will be selected based upon demonstrated research and conservation excellence and potential future impact in wildlife conservation.

Qualifications/Experience:
Applicants should have a PhD (completed by Jan 2020) in Conservation Biology, Wildlife Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Wildlife Ecology, or a related discipline or a DVM with a focus in tropical wildlife medicine, or related field, obtained within the past five years. Strong writing, speaking, presentation and teamwork skills are important.

The Living Earth Collaborative (https://livingearthcollaborative.wustl.edu/) and Department of Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis (https://anthropology.artsci.wustl.edu/) are seeking a highly qualified and motivated postdoctoral research associate to join their Madagascar Initiative under the direction of Drs. Krista Milich and Emily Wroblewski.

The postdoctoral research associate will join our project studying diademed sifakas (Propithecus diadema) and black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) in Madagascar (time will be split between Madagascar and St. Louis). The successful candidate will conduct behavioral observations and collect and process fecal samples for genetic analysis at two field sites in Madagascar, supervise students and research assistants at each, organize and analyze data, and write scientific manuscripts and grant applications.

Qualifications/Experience:
Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology, Animal Behavior, Biology, Ecology, or a related field by the time of appointment.

Applicants for this position should have experience with behavioral observations and conducting research at remote field sites. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience working in Madagascar and/or studying lemurs. Proficiency in French and/or Malagasy is a plus, but not required.

The position requires a substantial amount of data management and travel. In general, applicants should feel comfortable spending long days in the field collecting behavioral data and biological samples from lemurs, processing these samples, managing the various types of data being collected, and traveling internally in Madagascar. Similarly, they should feel comfortable analyzing data and writing scientific publications from the data collected while they are based in St. Louis. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for training and supervising teams of students and research assistants and should therefore have outstanding inter-personal communication, previous management experience, and excellent organizational skills.

Salary/funding:
The position is funded for two years, and the successful candidate will be expected to spend most of the first year in Madagascar and most of the second year in St. Louis. The selected candidate will be offered an initial contract for one year, with anticipated renewal for a second year based on satisfactory performance.

Base pay commensurate with experience.

Term of Appointment:
The start date for the position is somewhat flexible, but ideally between May and August 2020.

Wanted: Behavioral rehabilitation and investigation

Position Description:
Researcher of primates behaviour.

Educational Background:
This year I will do the final training project at the University of Biology of Murcia (Spain).
I have been an internal student for two years and I will do a third year in the Department of Zoology and Anthropology with Josefa Zapata Crespo, where I got to know the chucks, watching videos of their behavior, making ethological tables and observing the hierarchy of their group.
I did extracurricular work at a center called Mundomar in Benidorm (Spain) with lemurs catta and variegata during the summer. In 2018-2019, I found a professor at the University of Psychology who was developing an experiment on human behavior and neurobiology. I found it very interesting and a way to compare human behavior with that of non-human primates. So I contacted him and did internships during the year as a collaborator.
In addition, I took courses on intelligence and cognition in primates in Granada (Spain), given by Miquel Llorente, and a course entitled "Daily Neurobiology" online at the University of Chicago.
I'm always on the hunt for everything about primate behavior, ethology, but in most places they volunteer, and I'd like to start working at a center

Master project - Voluntary helping behaviour in pigs

We have an opportunity for a Master student (or other types of 4-6 months internships) for a project entitled “Voluntary helping behaviour in pigs”.

The Institute of Behavioural Physiology at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology, Dummerstorf, Germany, in collaboration with the Institute of Animal Welfare Science of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Austria are seeking a motivated Masters student to take part in the development of a new model of voluntary helping behaviour in pigs.

The research will be conducted at the Swine Experimentation Facility of the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology in Dummerstorf, Germany, near Rostock. You will play a central part in the project, with the goals to help with the design of the study, conduct training and hands-on trials to insure that pigs understand the task, and collect behavioural data and non-invasive hormone samples to examine spontaneous helping behaviour in pigs.

The starting date is flexible, but ideally would be in March or April 2020. We are seeking a candidate with a strong interest in animal behaviour and animal welfare and with previous research experience working with animals, ideally involving animal training. Students should be comfortable with working and writing in English. German language abilities are helpful but not necessary.
