Postdoctoral position in Evolutionary Ecology

We have a postdoctoral opening in our group (www.vanasiri.in) in the broad field of evolutionary ecology. We are based at IISER Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala, India), a young institute aiming to be a world-class centre for research and teaching. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated PhDs to live and carry out research in tropical settings.

The postdoc will have the flexibility of designing projects that complement existing research areas in the lab, or work on something new that enriches research in our group (see www.vanasiri/research). We work on various aspects of evolutionary ecology, including animal behaviour. The IISER Thiruvananthapuram campus is an outstanding location (see www.vanasiri.in/facilities) for ecological studies. Our campus includes, and is contiguous with, some of the best tropical rainforest areas in India, which translates to an abundance of study subjects and opportunities for field studies. More information about the position and application procedure here http://www.iisertvm.ac.in/openings/read_opening/115

Deadline: Screening of applications will start April 30th, but will continue until a suitable candidate is found.

Salary: Rs. 43,200 - 48,000 per month (including Housing Rent Allowance)

Life in Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum): The coastal city of Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala, and has a rich cultural heritage. It is within a stone's throw away from world-famous beaches such as Kovalam and Varkala, and lovely backwater tourism areas such as Poovar. Several hill stations (e.g Ponmudi) and wildlife sanctuaries are close by. Being a major medical tourism destination, the city has excellent medical care facilities.

It is a relatively small city, and the cost of living tends to be considerably lower than in bigger Indian cities. A 2-bedroom apartment can be had for Rs 8,000 - 10,000 per month. There are plenty of options for dining out - a meal at a decent local restaurant can start from Rs 50, but a good meal with a drink even in a five-star hotel usually costs less than Rs 1000. Costs for groceries and other daily needs can be looked up here (www.kada.in). Taxis can be hired from Rs 10 per km (a minimum fare of Rs 50), while the cost of driving your own small car (not for the faint-hearted!) is about Rs 5 per kilometer (petrol: Rs 67/litre, diesel: Rs 55/litre).

Field assistant positions in cognitive ecology, Moulis, French Pyrenees, début : Avr. 2015

Field assistant positions in bird cognitive ecology (French Pyrenees)

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic volunteer to help with an exciting field project developed in the French Pyrenees. The overall goal of the project is to understand how inter-individual differences in cognitive abilities is linked to personality, dominance, social networks and life history in wild great tits (Parus major). Volunteers will both help recording bird behaviours in the field with up-to-date equipment and participate to experiment in aviary. These internships will provide the volunteers a diverse experience on cognitive sciences, behavioural ecology and evolutionary biology. Additionally, being based at the Station of experimental Ecology of Moulis (SEEM) they will have the opportunity to discover one of the nicest and wildest area in the south of France.

Although some knowledge in ornithology and biology would be a plus, highly motivated applications from any field will be considered with high interest.

Duration of the internship is flexible from 1 to 3 months, but should start in early April 2015.

Volunteers will be under the direct supervision of Maxime Cauchoix (Post Doc, IAST) and will have the opportunity to collaborate with Alexis Chaine (Researcher, CNRS, SEEM).

We cannot offer any salary but we are happy to help students getting individual travel scholarship from their respective university and to pay for their accommodation (housing only) at the SEEM (150 €/month).

Postdoc position in (deer) Ethology at Stockholm University

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in Ethology at the Department of Zoology, Stockholm University.

The project explores deer foraging psychology, in particular plant-herbivore interactions.
More information below.
Thanks for spreading it among potentially candidates.

Best wishes,
Ulrika Alm Bergvall

A postdoctoral position is available in the research group of Dr Ulrika Alm Bergvall, in collaboration with Prof. Olof Leimar (Stockholm University) and Prof. Charlotta Turner (Lund University).
We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to work in the project ”Pine sapling protection based on plant defence theory and ungulate foraging behaviour”. Ungulate populations are important natural resources, but are also associated with costs by foraging on young pine plants. Herbivore behaviour and physiology have coevolved with plant protection mechanisms over millions of years. By taking advantage of this evolved system it should be possible to improve forest management. The aim of the project is to protect pine saplings from deer browsing by making use of general principles of deer foraging behaviour in relation to the concentration of secondary compounds in a focal tree and its neighbours. The project explores deer foraging psychology, in particular foraging decisions over small to medium spatial scales. The interactions between plants and herbivores are among the most important and intriguing in nature and the scientific field of plant-herbivore interactions is quite broad and rapidly developing.
The work includes fieldwork, data analyses, help with supervision of student projects, article- and grant writing. The field work will mainly be conducted at or nearby the Tovetorp Zoological Research Station, Stockholm University. The project also includes communication with stakeholders.

Eligibility and selection criteria

The applicant must have a doctoral degree (or have a PhD thesis ready with a date fixed within 2015 for thesis defense) from an accredited college/university in Biology, Forestry or a similar field of studies. In filling the position, particular weight will be given to research proficiency and knowledge of relevant theory and methods within forestry, wildlife ecology, animal cognition, foraging psychology or/and evolution of plant defences.

Terms of employment
The position is for two years full time. Start of position should be in 2015 but the exact date is a matter of negotiation with the successful candidate.

Information
For further information, please contact the project leader Ulrika Alm Bergvall Ulrika.Alm-Bergvall@zoologi.su.se at the Department of Zoology, Stockholm University.
