Two volunteer field assistants needed for nationwide ape and elephant survey in mainland Equatorial Guinea

Hiring Organization:
Max-Planck Institute/Conservation International

Date Posted:
2010-07-20

Position Description:
We are seeking two volunteer field assistants to support, help and manage field monitoring teams with data collection for a nationwide ape and elephant survey in mainland Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa. Equatorial Guinea is home to two endangered ape species (i.e. Gorilla gorilla and Pan troglodytes) and the endangered forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), however we lack current information on their status in this country. Therefore, Conservation International, in collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, has planned to design and conduct a nationwide survey during 2010-2011. Specifically, this survey will help to update existing information on ape and elephant population distribution, abundance and threats throughout the country.

Qualifications/Experience:
The appropriate candidates are expected to hold at least a Bachelor's degree and possess some understanding of basic statistical concepts (particularly of the line transect methodology).
They should have prior field experience, preferably under hot/humid climate. They should be physically fit, and be able to work independently under isolated conditions (camping, with limited access to modern conveniences).
Conversational level of Spanish language is required.
International applicants will need to provide scanned copy of passport, police record, and proof of negative HIV test for visa requirements (exception: US citizens).
Successful applicants must provide proof of international health insurance for 9-month study period.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Reimbursement of flight cost and a stipend of US$1,800 will be provided after successful completion of the project. All expenses and travel in the field are covered by the project.

Term of Appointment:
Approximately 9 months, with expected start date mid-September

Application Deadline:
August 15th 2010

3-year postdoc on tool use and culture in crows

Hiring Organization:
University of Oxford, UK

Date Posted:
2010-07-17

Position Description:
UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Tool use in New Caledonian crows

A three-year postdoctoral position is available, from August 2010 onwards, to work on the ecological and social context of tool use in New Caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides). The post is funded as part of a 5-year BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship to Dr Christian Rutz, and will be based at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, UK. The post-holder will be responsible for coordinating and conducting fieldwork in New Caledonia, South Pacific. The research project will chart the ecology and behaviour of wild, free-ranging crows, using detailed field observations, systematic surveys, and novel biologging technologies. In addition, specific hypotheses will be examined in controlled experiments with wild and captive subjects. This is an exceptional opportunity to conduct topical field research on animal tool use and culture in a high-profile study system, and to take a leading role in a prolific and expanding research project.

Informal inquiries (with CV) should be addressed directly to Dr Christian Rutz (christian.rutz@zoo.ox.ac.uk).

Further particulars and application forms are available from http://www.zoo.ox.ac.uk/jobs or from the Personnel Office of the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford (Tinbergen Building, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PS, UK; phone: +44(0) 1865 271190; email: recruit@zoo.ox.ac.uk). Quoting reference number AT10013, applicants should send to the above address: (i) a completed application form; (ii) a CV with contact details of three referees; and (iii) a cover letter explaining point-by-point how they meet the selection criteria for the post (as specified in the further particulars) and why they wish to conduct research on New Caledonian crows.

The closing date for applications is 30 July 2010, and interviews with short-listed candidates are scheduled for 10 August 2010 (or will take place soon thereafter). This is a re-advertisement, and applicants from the previous round do not need to re-apply.

Qualifications/Experience:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in behavioural ecology, ecology, evolutionary biology or a related subject, and experience in conducting independent field research, preferably in remote study locations. Proven skills in writing and publishing papers in leading scientific journals are essential. Experience of supervision in a research context, and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team are desirable. Previous field-ornithological experience, or a background in animal-cognition research, are not essential.

Salary/funding:
salary range: 28,983 -- 35,646 GBP p.a. (incl. discretionary range to 38,951 GBP p.a.)

Application Deadline:
30 July 2010

Field assistant, Lomas Barbudal Monkey Project

Hiring Organization:
UCLA

Date Posted:
2010-07-15

Position Description:
The Lomas Barbudal Capuchin Project has been running for 20 years, and (funding permitting) will continue for many years to come. Each year we accept about 6 interns who stay a full year and participate in data collection. The project currently monitors 11 social groups of monkeys. Virtually all monkeys are well habituated, and their genetic relationships are known, as well as social histories dating back several years in most cases. The primary focus of research currently is life histories, particularly male migration strategies and female counter-strategies to infanticide.
Application instructions are on the following website:
http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/anthro/faculty/sperry/jobs.html
Please read the detailed guide to working on the monkey project BEFORE applying or contacting the project, as this will answer virtually all questions. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to read the book "Manipulative Monkeys: The Capuchins of Lomas Barbudal," which is a popular science book documenting not only the first 15 years of scientific research, but the life style of researchers working at this site.

Qualifications/Experience:
There are no absolute criteria, and we try to hire people with a blend of different talents. But some traits that help are good grades (>3.3 GPA), some prior Spanish training, computer skills, auto mechanic skills, and prior experience studying animal behavior and working in the field. The most important trait in a field assistant is strong work ethic and the ability to make a firm commitment for a year. Please do not apply if you are the sort of person who signs contracts and then backs out, as such behavior is highly damaging to the project (as well as to your own reputation). It is also highly desirable for applicants to have done some reading in primatology (not just websites, but journal articles and books, including some from this project) before applying.

Salary/funding:
None. However, the field manager position (which pays a real salary in addition to room and board) is always someone selected from the pool of former or current interns. We are applying for grants to allow small stipends in addition to paying living and transportation expenses, but currently we do not have such funds.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Room and board are provided, though interns must feed themselves when away on vacation. Upon completion of the 1-year contract, interns qualify for a travel refund of up to $1000 for their plane fares. Assistants must buy their own medical insurance.

Term of Appointment:
Minimum one year. Start dates are flexible, but we need people to start immediately (August and every couple months thereafter.)

Application Deadline:
Rolling deadlines: Try to apply at least 3 months before desired start date. We still need people to start in August 2011.

Comments:
These internships are excellent preparation for graduate school. Interns who finish their terms have always received admission to high quality graduate programs (44 of our past interns have gone to graduate school).
