MEASURING ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR

Using ethology to define, quantify and analyse behavioural data

 

This advanced course will focus on how to use an ethological approach to quantify and understand behavioural data. Participants will learn the four questions of Ethology (the four levels of analysis to study animal behaviour: evolution, function, development and mechanisms) and use them in a practical way. For that, we will use examples of several taxa to build ethograms, learn the methods and tools to record and register behaviour on different types of studies, and finally learn the possible uses of such data. The final session will entail real-life ethological observations at the Palma Aquarium, where the participants will have the opportunity to design their ethological study, perform observations to collect data and analyse it and answer their research questions. Specially designed for undergraduate, master and PhD students with interest in animal behaviour.

Participants are expected to have at least some knowledge on general biology, physiology, ecology and evolution.

The course is hosted at the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA-CSIC/UIB) located in Esporles (Mallorca, Spain), in collaboration with FishEthoGroup Association (FEG) and the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR).

About the lecturers:

 

Dr. João Saraiva is a fish ethologist with a special interest in welfare. He is currently leading the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at the Centre of Marine Sciences in Faro, Portugal and is the president and founder of the FishEthoGroup Association. With a research background on behaviour and communication in teleosts, João now focuses on the application of fundamental science to improve the welfare of fishes, both in aquaculture and in fisheries. The team lead by João has an extensive record of achievements in research, training, dissemination and consultancy. He is an invited lecturer of Ethology at the University of Algarve, and also works as a consultant for EU institutions, certification bodies and other private stakeholders.

 

Dr. María Cabrera is a biologist with a speciality in fish behaviour and neuroscience. She did a MSc in Animal Behaviour and Neuroscience at Utrecht University (The Netherlands), a PhD in Fish Social Behaviour and Neuroscience at McGill University (Canada) and worked at a Comparative Cognition laboratory at the University of Cambridge (UK). María is currently a researcher at the FishEthoGroup Association and the Center of Marine Sciences of the Algarve (CCMAR). She is interested in the underlying mechanisms of animal cognition and social behaviour and in how we can use this information to improve the life and welfare of farmed fishes. Her latest work involves the use of heart rate bio-loggers to explore the effects of environmental enrichment and stunning and slaughter methods on fish welfare.

 

Dr. Pablo Arechavala is a marine biologist specialized in fish ecology and behavior. He is a researcher at the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) and member of FEG- FishEthoGroup Association. He studies the behaviour of wild and farmed fish under the influence of aquaculture environments with a view to promote a more sustainable and responsible aquaculture activity. He is focused on investigating and validating behavioural indicators of fish welfare, developing operational tools to monitor fish behaviour and welfare at farms, assessing the effects of environmental enrichment on farmed fish species or rising welfare management plans at commercial and global scale, among others.

ISN Members - Education Opportunity in Austria

I would like to invite you to have a look at this neuroscience winter school on Neural Control of Behaviour, with a focus on Navigation, which I will be co-chairing with Professors Nachum Ulanovsky and Henrik Mouritsen.

 

This school is a FENS schools, organised in collaboration with the Hertie Foundation.

 

In this FENS Winter School, we will aim to bridge the gap between two approaches used to study the neurobiology of navigation: research coming from ethology and ecology examining how animals such as insects or birds navigate in the wild over long distances, and what sensory cues they are using; and research coming from neuroscience and psychology mostly studying navigation in rats and mice in laboratory mazes, consequently discovering several spatial cell types, including place cells, grid cells and head-direction cells.

Primate Behaviour & Ecology Field Course at Danau Girang Field Centre, 2017 - Offer

Methods and Techniques in Primate Behaviour and Ecology -  24 July – 7 August 2017

Danau Girang Field Centre, Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Sabah, Borneo

A two-week field course in the tropical forest of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in Sabah, Borneo is being offered for the 6^th consecutive year by Danau Girang Field Centre, from 24 July - 7 August 2017. The course will not run with less than 8 students, with a maximum of 15 spots. The cost is £1200, which does not include your return ticket to and from the field centre.

Tuition will be given in the following areas: satellite tracking and radio-telemetry of diurnal and nocturnal primates, habitat and phenology sampling, methods in behavioural observation, primate census methods, GPS, and primate endo-parasites analysis. In the first week, lectures will be given that introduce concepts in primate behaviour and ecology, current topics in primate research (with special focus on primate behaviour), and a range of research methods. At the end of the first week, the students will develop their own research projects and apply one of the taught methods to collect their own data. At the end of the course, the students will give a mini-presentation about their project. In addition, the students will learn how to propose a research idea. You may be able to arrange independent study or dissertation credit from your university.

Cost includes: transportation to and from the field centre by bus and boat from Sandakan airport, your accommodation and meals/drinks at the field centre during the two weeks, a conservation fee, fuel for boat trips, and the use of the facilities (including laboratory space, electricity, running water and internet!). The cost does NOT include a round-trip international flight. Students with special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian) or allergies can be accommodated but needs to be pre-arranged.

The Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada, is calling for applications from potential graduate students for the 2017 Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Graduate Scholarship. The Scholarship will support the training of researchers at the masters or doctoral level to pursue animal welfare research at the University of Prince Edward Island. Both applied or more fundamental approaches to research pertaining to animal welfare are welcome. Applications for 2017 will be accepted until 12pm (noon) (AST) Friday February 17, 2017, with decisions to be announced in April. Students may take up their award at any time of the year but must do so within 12 months of the date of the letter of offer.

Netherlands Society for Behavioural Biology meeting 26-28 november 2014: PhD Workshop

Each year the annual meeting of the Netherlands Society for Behavioural Biology will be preceded by a workshop for PhD-students. This year that will be on Wednesday the 26th of November. All PhD students in behavioural biology are invited to attend! This workshop focuses on methodological and ethical issues in behavioural biology. During the workshop PhD students have the opportunity to present their plans or preliminary results from their research projects. Presenting at as an early stage PhD is highly recommended. Ample time for discussion is planned in. The costs for the PhD Workshop are 90 euro, including lunch and tea/coffee breaks.

The annual NVG PhD Workshop will take place in 2014 at Soesterberg. The goal of these workshops is to facilitate contact and discussion among PhD students in behavioural biology. Normally there are about 15 PhD students and 2 or 3 senior researchers, all of whom will be present throughout the day. This year we have a special speaker:

Gert van Maanen

Gert is known from his role as Editor in chief at Bionieuws (NIBI).

Bionieuws is a magazine made by journalists and scientists that appears

20 times per year and contains new information for biologists about scientific publications, education and society.

The workshop will this year consist of three main parts:

1) Gert van Maanen will introduce the topic ‘Science communication and societal relevance’. Gert will give an interactive presentation in which he will explain the do’s and don’ts of science communication and where he will give hints on what to do when you want to make you scientific findings public. The goal of this part is get a feeling for the position that PhD’s have in the discussion on societal relevance, but also how society should view our work. What do you want the general public to think about your work and what do they need to remember. And most of

all: to practice how to discuss and develop your own opinion on a topic that might not be as easy as it seems.

2) A series of talks by (some of) the PhD students about their work plans (Max. 10 minutes talk + 20 minutes discussion). All of the students (including those who are not presenting a talk) + the senior researchers are present and contribute to the discussion. Although not all the students present their work, the discussions typically range across a whole series of general issues related to research (the importance of the research question, the approach chosen, the design of behavioural experiments, data analysis, etc). But more importantly, the PhDs should prepare 2 slides in which he or she will try to present their work to a general public. And above that indicate what the societal relevance is if the work. Starting PhD students (in the first or second year of their PhD research) are particularly encouraged to offer a presentation, though the topic will be usefull for all PhDs.

Recently, one of the talks that generated the most useful discussion (both for the student and audience) was given by a PhD student who had started their project only 6 weeks before: this is a good chance to think about your project plans and get useful feedback!

3) Small-group discussions about the highs and lows of PhD research. A chance to exchange experiences about what worked or didn’t work, and to get to know some of the other PhD students better.

General information

Organized by the Messerli Research Institute and in cooperation with the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna, it offers a comprehensive, research-oriented training in the various fields of human-animal interactions.

By imparting theoretical and methodological expertise in relevant disciplines of natural sciences and humanities and developing critical reflection and argumentation, the program will contribute to improve the complex relationship between humans and animals. The interdisciplinary research on questions of social and ethical relevance is novel and therefore a challenge for the students.

Graduates will find opportunities both in the academic environment and in socially relevant fields of human-animal interactions. The program aims to train experts who will assume responsibility in human-animal interactions on a scientific basis and after ethical reflection.

Structure and duration of studies

The program comprises 4 semesters and 120 ECTS. It is composed of 4 compulsory modules, 2 elective modules and one Master's thesis.
