Titre: "Le goût du risque chez l’enfant: la prise de risque économique et physique entre 7 et 9 ans"Description du projet de thèse:L’attitude face au risque change en fonction des âges de la vie. L’étude des décisions économiques, c’est-à-dire des décisions motivées par l’obtention de gains éventuels, met ainsi en évidence des différences comportementales entre les enfants et les adultes. Sur le plan du comportement économique, nous observons chez les enfants âgés entre 5 et 8 ans une appétence au risque. En effet, à la différence des adultes, les enfants préfèrent les options risquées en situation de gain. Sur le plan de la prise de risque physique, nous observons également des spécificités comportementales chez l’enfant. Ainsi, malgré une moindre exposition au trafic routier, les enfants âgés entre 5 et 9 ans représentent le cinquième des piétons tués surla route. Une sous-estimationdu risque se trouve à l’origine de nombreux accidents de circulation, en particulier au niveau de la perception de la dangerosité d’une route en contexte de traversée pédestre. Le présent projet de thèse porte sur l’étude des mécanismes psychologiques à l’œuvre dans la prise de risque chez les enfants âgés entre 7 et 9 ans. Pour comprendre la manière dont les enfants appréhendent le risque économique, il faut introduire l’existence de biais comportementaux tels que l’appétence au risque en situation de gain (cf., Rivière, Kurt & Meunier2019JournalofNeuroscience,Psychology,andEconomics; Rivière, Stomp, Augustin, Lemasson & Blois-Heulin2018DevelopmentalPsychobiology). TASKS. The contractor shall:
·         Coordinate all training for monkeys that are not yet enrolled in a project under an SCNI investigator; handle and train large (6-15 kg) rhesus macaque monkeys; bring the animal from the cage into a special chair, safely restrain the animal; teach the animal to respond to a variety of different visual stimuli using operant conditioning; acclimatize animals to the mock-magnet training environment so that the animals grow accustomed to experiencing an enclosed space with loud noises.
·         Monitor SCNI’s marmoset monkey colony; monitor health, conduct ultrasound, care of babies.
·         Assist SCNI’s research with marmoset monkeys; catch the animal from the cage, acclimate the animal to the experimental setup, restrain the animal, give injections; assist with anesthesia in marmosets and rats; prepare implants and implant head restraints; check implants of animals and suggest/help cleaning of the implant if necessary; record chambers and electrode arrays; analyze and evaluate preliminary behavioral data from monkey experiments and report findings; sterilize and clean surgical tools; participate in, prepare for and clean up following aseptic surgery; construct and sterilize small elements used in electrophysiology recordings such as electrode arrays, guide tubes, and cannulae.
·         Perform basic level operation of the MR scanner for both structural and functional imaging; maintain the laboratory 3D printer; coordinate with machine shops and/or assist staff coordinate with outside companies for special 3D printing; prepare printing and post-print processing of 3D models; coordinate lab/machine shop interactions, scheduling meetings when needed.
·         Work with lab heads on editing and submission of animal study proposals; assist incoming laboratory members with initial administrative requirements; advise incoming laboratory members in procedures as appropriate; assist staff with ordering and assembly of equipment; assist staff to organize and document all vendors and purchases to facilitate future orders; coordinate inventory throughout the lab, replenish supplies in a timely manner; book meeting room for laboratory meetings; coordinate presenter schedule

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
·         Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree.
·         Nine (9) years of experience in Molecular Biology, Immunocytochemistry, or a related field. Demonstrates experience in performing surgical procedures with small animals.
·         Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
·         Expertise in programming in Matlab, Java, or C preferred.
·         Sufficient in stature and strength to be able to control a 15kg animal.
·         No general apprehension working with monkeys.
·         Experience with aseptic surgery.
·         Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
·         Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Available in Primate Behavioral Neuropathology

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Carol Shively in the Department of Pathology, Section on Comparative Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine to study social and biological factors that affect age-related changes in behavior and neurobiology in nonhuman primates (NHPs). The Fellow will work with a multidisciplinary team on the development of a NHP model of social and dietary factors that promote neuropathologic changes characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, and determine functional correlates. The fellow also will be encouraged to make use of extensive NHP data, tissue, and imaging repositories that provide a rich source of research projects ready for analysis and publication.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in the social or biological sciences. Requirements include outstanding skills in data analysis, written and oral communication, and the ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team-oriented environment. Candidates with experience in NHP behavior and neurobiology are particularly encouraged to apply. The position is available for up to three years and compensation will follow NIH postdoctoral stipend levels.

In  polygynous  or  polygynandrous  species,  strongly  biased  operational  sex-ratios  (OSR) frequently induce high male reproductive skew. Such an intense male -male competition over access to females leads to the evolution of strategies characterized by high-competitiveness1, dominance,  territoriality  and  aggressive  partner  monopolization.  Yet,  sympatric polymorphisms  in which several alternative mating tactics  co-exist as the result of  frequency dependant games2.  Population of dominant morphs  in which males actively defend territory or females can be invaded by sneaker males, which are typically smaller and less aggressive than dominant males.  This  existence of multiple optimal investments  in competitiveness is  the result of the trade-off between being able to acquire many or high-quality resources and the ability to make the best use of these resources. Sneaker males typically attain many extra-pair copulations  without  investing  in  territorial  defence,  thus  achieving  reproductive  success equivalent to the one of more dominant morphs.
During  expansion  of  their  range,  invasive  species  experience  contrasted  conditions along the invasion gradient: the evolutionary pressures are rather different  at the invasion front  and  at the range-core. For example, low densities at the edge of the range mean that males should experience lower sexual  competition. Thus, investment into reproduction may trade-off with adaptations for more rapid dispersal: recent invasion unleashes evolutionary and ecological pressures and should favour low resource allocation to reproduction3.

Biological  model  and  field  work.  We  propose  to  explore  the  evolution  of  alternative reproductive  tactics  in  a  rapidly  invasive  fish  species,  the  round  goby  Neogobius melanostomus. Round gobies, originated from the Ponto-caspian region, were introduced by boat water ballasts 20 years ago in the region of the Great Lakes in North America, where this species  is  now  ubiquitous  and  has  dramatic  consequences  on  the  native  fauna4. More recently,  populations are now settled  in  Western Europe  rivers, notably in France: the invasion front is currently located in the rivers of Alsace-Lorraine in North-East of France5.  The invasion front  is  expected  to  reach  the  river  Rhône  and  the  major  alpine  lakes  (Lake  Geneva,  Lake Annecy, Lake Bourget) in the next few years.
In this species,  a polymorphism of reproductive strategies has been characterized by the presence in the same  population  of several alternative tactics of reproduction6,7: certain so-called Guarder  males invest substantially in reproduction (defence of the partner and the territory,  nest  building,  parental  care),  and  other  males  called  Sneakers  favour  a  lower investment  in  reproduction  and  seeking  to  obtain  st ealthy  copulations,  less  effective  than those of the Guarders but also less costly in time and energy.
This biological model provides unique opportunity to compare behavioural, ecological and  physiological  performances  between  populations  at  different  stages  of  the  invasive process.  This  research  project  will  involve  several  field  trips  in  North-East  of  France  for population  sampling  and  in  natura  behavioural  observations.  The  aim  of  the  project  is  to decipher the underlying constraints controlling the alternative reproductive tactics and their local ecological success. To this end, different populations will be sampled along the invasion gradient  and  compared  using  a  wide  range  of  integrative  tools  including  behavioural phenotyping,  measures  of  acoustic  communication  using  hydrophone8 and  in  vivo ecophysiology performances (swim ability, oxygen consumption,  fecundity, aging, life span).
We also intend to  compare  the competitive ability of  these  morphs  (Guarder  vs.  Sneaker)  in terms  of  foraging  or  territoriality  against  other  non-invasive  species  and  therefore  gain knowledge  that  will  enhance  the  management  and  conservation  of  our  freshwater ecosystems.
Supervision. This PhD thesis will be co-supervised by a behavioural ecologist specialized in the evolution of mating tactics (FXDM, Lehna, Lyon), an ecologist with special interest in foraging strategy and acoustic communication in fish species (VM, ENES – CNRL, Saint-Etienne), and an ecophysiologist (Loic Teulier,  Lehna, Lyon) specialized in  bioenergetic efficiency in fish species.
 
Applicants. Applicants should have a Master (MSc) and a strong background in at least one of the  following areas:  animal behaviour, ecology,  or ecophysiology. Solid knowledge in statistics would be appreciated.

Basedon previous studies (lesional5,6, histochemical7 or electrophysiological8 approaches), the verticallobe complex (VLc) is considered as a key brain circuit of the learning and memory systems.Nevertheless, the spatial and temporal activation of the VLc during memory formation and recallas well as its specificity toward a memory type remain unknown. Thus, we propose to address theseissues in the cuttlefish by assessing the expression of immediate early genes (IEG) known to beinvolved in memory processes. Wild Futures is a registered charity founded upon five decades of experience as a leader in the field of primate welfare and conservation, environmental education and sustainable practice. We are committed to protecting primates and habitats worldwide, with the protection of non-human primates at the forefront of our work.

Our safe haven for monkeys rescued from situations of abuse and neglect is The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall, which has an international reputation for levels of care and innovative management techniques. We work closely with other organisations to lobby local and central government to bring about positive change for primates. We also support projects overseas with funding, practical assistance and advice and believe that education is vital in changing things for the better; educating more than 30,000 visitors and students on our work each year.

Description of placement:

We are looking for six long-term volunteers for a 12 month placement starting in October 2020, December/January and February 2021- 3 UK residents and 3 non-UK but EU residents.

This is a one-year long post, which is unpaid but for which you will be provided with accommodation and food. It is an exciting opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, working alongside an experienced team, with the chance to earn a recommendation from a highly respected primate sanctuary. All of which are assets to anyone passionate about pursuing a career in animal welfare and conservation. Selected candidates will be invited to visit the Sanctuary and be formally interviewed for this position and selected according to demonstrated ability to fulfil the following:

Primary responsibilities
You should be aware of and have a commitment to the aims of Wild Futures. You will work primarily with a small group of monkeys. This may be Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), marmosets (callitichidae) or woolly monkeys (Lagothrix), depending on the needs of the groups at the time. You will be expected to learn to distinguish individual monkey and become familiar with their backgrounds. Over the course of the year, you will (under the supervision of experienced staff) become one of the monkeys' primary caregivers; cleaning, maintaining and enriching enclosures and preparing and distributing food and medication, whilst monitoring the health and well-being of the monkeys in your care. You will be responsible for maintaining daily up-to date information on the status and wellbeing of each individual through a computer database.

Other responsibilities
The Sanctuary is open to the public for six months of the year. You will need to learn about the monkeys and the ethos of the Sanctuary sufficiently, so you can talk to and educate visitors and run workshops. You should demonstrate confidence and willingness to do this.

You will also:
Be asked to supervise short-term volunteers on other cleaning routines, making enrichment and other tasks that are essential to the day to day running of the Sanctuary.
Be asked to assist with other work such as territory maintenance, grounds and gardening work, campaigns and computer work, as well as work in the shop, at the desk or in the café (especially during busy times), as the need arises.
Need to share responsibility for certain tasks with members of staff and other interns (such as cleaning the public toilets, cooking for the household and washing house laundry) via rota system.
Be expected to develop and maintain good communications with all team members. A monthly review process will enable you and the team to monitor your progress and mentor you through your internship.
Show that you can be flexible in your work, adapting to new situations as they arise and you will be able to prioritise work according to tasks you have been given (with monkey care always being the most important).

Qualifications/Experience and European Solidarity Corps:
As this placement is funded under the European Solidarity Corps there are certain criteria and eligibility. Only 18-30 year old can apply who are residents of the UK and most EU countries, and you must be aged between 18 and 30 years old at the start of the project. You do not need an previous experience but this is desirable.

Salary/funding:
As this is a funded placement, your food accommodation and travel are all paid for, you will also receive a small amount of pocket money each month too. You will live on-site in a communal house with shred kitchen, bathroom, living space and gardens but have your own private room.

Term of Appointment:One year minimum

Position Description: The Born Free Primate Sanctuary's aim is to provide nonhuman primates a lifelong home and a high standard of care without being needlessly intrusive. The 186-acre sanctuary, located 90 miles south of San Antonio, Texas, is home to over 450 monkeys, many of whom were rescued from abusive or exploitative situations. The focus of animal care is to provide conditions in which the captive populations of macaques, baboons, and vervets are allowed to live out the remainder of their lives with extensive freedom of movement, choice of food, and choice of companions, in accordance with their social nature. The sanctuary is not open to the public and we do not display animals for educational or entertainment purposes.

Born Free's mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife - including endangered species - in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. Inspired by the iconic film Born Free, we work locally, nationally and internationally to end wild animal cruelty and suffering, protect threatened wildlife, and keep wildlife in the wild where they rightfully belong.

We are seeking a full-time caregiver to join our sanctuary team.

Role Description below:

1. Participate in the daily care of all animals including, but not limited to:
- Clean habitats
- Empty, clean and re-fill water troughs
- Prepare and distribute food
- Report any animal showing signs of ill health or injury to management
- Dispense medications and medical treatments
- Maintain written log entries

2.Perform grounds and enclosure maintenance work as required:
- Trim/mow vegetation around the Sanctuary to keep paths and other areas clear
- Assist with construction projects such as building shelters, etc.

3.Make and distribute enrichment.

4.Help with the weekly delivery of fresh produce, dry feed, hay & other deliveries by unloading and stacking supplies.

The 186-acre sanctuary, located 90 miles south of San Antonio, Texas, is home to over 450 monkeys, many of whom were rescued from abusive or exploitative situations. The focus of animal care is to provide conditions in which the captive populations of macaques, baboons, and vervets are allowed to live out the remainder of their lives with extensive freedom of movement, choice of food, and choice of companions, in accordance with their social nature. The sanctuary is not open to the public and we do not display animals for educational or entertainment purposes.

Born Free's mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife - including endangered species - in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. Inspired by the iconic film Born Free, we work locally, nationally and internationally to end wild animal cruelty and suffering, protect threatened wildlife, and keep wildlife in the wild where they rightfully belong.

We are seeking a full-time caregiver to join our sanctuary team.

Role Description below:

1. Participate in the daily care of all animals including, but not limited to:
- Clean habitats
- Empty, clean and re-fill water troughs
- Prepare and distribute food
- Report any animal showing signs of ill health or injury to management
- Dispense medications and medical treatments
- Maintain written log entries

2.Perform grounds and enclosure maintenance work as required:
- Trim/mow vegetation around the Sanctuary to keep paths and other areas clear
- Assist with construction projects such as building shelters, etc.

3.Make and distribute enrichment.

4.Help with the weekly delivery of fresh produce, dry feed, hay & other deliveries by unloading and stacking supplies.

Etablir en co-construction les référentiels BEA et BTA dans les usines

Background of Organization
Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program (GPOCP) is dedicated to the conservation of orangutans and biodiversity in and around Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP).  GPNP is home to one of the last remaining tracts of pristine lowland dipterocarp forest in the world and the critically endangered Bornean orangutan.  Our mission is to conserve wild orangutans through habitat and animal protection, working closely with local communities and governments. We take a multi-pronged approach to conservation, employing five main strategies: 1) Habitat protection through legal protection of community forests 2) Development of environmentally friendly and sustainable livelihoods that protect forests 3) Environmental education and conservation awareness about orangutans and habitat protection 4) Wildlife crime investigation and habitat monitoring and 5) Scientific Research. GPOCP was founded in 1999 by orangutan researchers Dr. Cheryl Knott and Dr. Elizabeth Yaap to address the conservation threats facing wild orangutans in GPNP by working with local communities.  GPOCP was legally registered as an Indonesian NGO in 2002 under the name Yayasan Palung. 

Job Description: Program and Development Director
We are currently seeking a highly-motivated and committed individual to oversee our programs in Indonesia and our fundraising efforts.  The Program Director is a senior position on the ground, reporting directly to Dr. Cheryl Knott (Executive Director). The ideal candidate will have previous experience in conservation or community development in Indonesia, and working proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia.
The Program and Development Director will be responsible for:
Fundraising and Program Development (35%)
Support the on-going development of our programs and related activities; Oversee strategic planning; work with staff and board to strategize and develop new directions for Yayasan Palung that will accomplish its ultimate goal of orangutan conservation; identify funding opportunities and develop appropriate funding proposals in close coordination with the Executive Director; produce grant reports for existing grants and new grant funding received; assist the Executive Director in liaising with and reporting to current and potential donors; organize site visits for current and potential donors; represent GPOCP in Indonesia at workshops and meetings with other NGOs and government agencies.

Staff Management (25%)
Directly oversee the 20 Indonesian staff with support of Program Managers; hold monthly meetings to maintain open communication between project teams; monitor and evaluate staff performance, including reviewing contracts; advise Executive Director on personnel decisions.
Communications (10%)
Create monthly newsletters on program activities; make regular Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram postings; update website to inform and empower individual supporters abroad.
Capacity Building (10%)
Tailor staff capacity building activities to existing and needed skills; conduct internal capacity building activities to build basic office, computer and language skills; assist staff in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating program activities through annual and monthly work plans and reports; coordinate visits and training from outside experts and volunteers; assist staff in identifying relevant external training courses they can attend to help further build capacity.   

Financial Oversight (10%)                                                                                                        
Provide oversight of financial reporting, cash management and banking; Responsible for maintaining and adherence to program and grant budgets.

Reporting and Administrative Duties (10%)
Regularly liaison with Executive Director via email and Skype; submit monthly program activity and progress reports; produce an annual report each year.
Qualifications/Experience
·       Master’s degree in biological anthropology, primatology, conservation biology, ecology, natural resource management or related field
·       Language fluency in both English and Bahasa Indonesia
·       Demonstrated knowledge and experience in grant writing and reporting
·       Previous fundraising experience (including with foundations, individuals, corporations and/or government is desirable)
·       Understanding of conservation and development issues in Southeast Asia
·       Experience in tropical field conservation and/or research projects (minimum 3 years)
·       Staff management and coordination experience
·       Experience managing internal capacity building
·       Ability to work productively with a multicultural staff in remote, rural areas
·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·       Computer Proficiency (including Excel and other Office software)
·       Experience with data management software such as Access or Filemaker is desirable
·       Previous experience working in Indonesia is desirable
