The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

Job Summary

As directed by Principal Investigator, provide project management and research technical management and support in the development of innovative and novel therapies for human diseases for research programs that focus on functional recovery after spinal cord injury research and research to develop systems that can help restore sensory function, communication, and control to impaired humans (such as brain-machine interfaces). Provide innovative research support and laboratory operations management with duties that include conducting operant behavioral training, testing, and conditioning non-human primates to perform complex tasks and a variety of cognitive testing/personality assessments. Develop data collection processes and conduct data analyses and reporting of animals' progress. Responsible for working directly with others in multiple areas and disciplines to execute all experimental procedures and consult directly with investigators on collection and interpretations of data. Areas of experimental involvement include animal evaluation for study enrollment, animal training pre-operation and characterization of motor skills.

 

Conduct specialized technical procedures to support electrophysiological experiments using nonhuman primates and a apply variety of neuro science related techniques to understand basic mechanisms sensory and motor function. Electrophysiology experiments may involve obtaining tissue samples and making recordings of synaptic and intrinsic properties of neurons, and precise and accurate data reporting according to research protocols. Provide data analyses/communication to research team, which includes quantitative analyses of acquired data, making graphs/figures for data visualization, group presentation, and scientific writing. Provide research support in experimental planning/design, which includes animal database organization, writing protocols and amendments, SOPs/Lab safety manual/training records, and participate in lab team meetings. Work within a collaborative, inclusive research team of researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and research technicians.

 

Also provides critical, acute, and post-operative care support and monitoring of experimental animals, includes monitoring for any signs or symptoms that may reflect altered health or physiological status, and report health problems to veterinary staff and to the PI. Provide support and assistance in surgical procedures; maintain sterile instruments, and equipment used in surgical procedures and perfusions. Instruct and provide training in laboratory procedures, animal training and conditioning according to research protocols, safety, and equipment usage. Assure compliance with all protocols and SOPs as well as safety standards, policies and procedures. Directly responsible for leadership, project management and execution of specific research projects at the CNPRC and the coordination of activities with the PI and research team. Responsible for the overall training and orientation of all technical laboratory functions for lab staff, faculty, collaborating investigators, researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students.
