Position Description:

For an ongoing study on the behavioural ecology of bonobos, we are searching for one field assistant. The work of the assistant will include collection of data on the ecology and behaviour of bonobos at Lui Kotale, Salonga Antional Park, Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently, field work is focussed on one habituated community. Candidates are expected to assist in an ongoing PhD project on social relations among males.

Qualifications/Experience:

Essential requirements are high resistance to psychological and physical stress, and basic skills in collecting behavioural and ecological data. Field work requires long-distance walking (up to 30 km per day) and working time often exceeds 10 hours per day. Given the difficult terrain and the extreme climate, work demands not only physical fitness but also high motivation. The proximity to other persons can lead to psychological stress and candidates must be able to adapt to the extreme living conditions at the field site.As most members of the research crew speak English, this language is usually sufficient for communication within the research team. However, for communication with local assistants skills in French and African languages such as Lingal are required and candidates with such skills will be preferred.

Salary/funding: 300 Euro per month

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging): The project will cover all costs for ivsa and the expenses for domestic flights. It also contributes up to 800 Euro to the international return ticket. This money will be re-imbursed only AFTER successful completionof a 9 month term of appointment.The project provides food (a melange of local food and some western food) and offers lodging (in tents) at the field site. Note that expenses for food and lodging during stays in Kinshasa on the way in/ out are NOT covered by the project. Expenses for private field equipment, medicinal supplies and insurances can NOT be covered by the project.

L’archipel Kerguelen fait partie de la reserve naturelle nationale des Terres Australes Francaises. Creee en octobre 2006, cette reserve terrestre et marine s’etend sur plus de 2.2 millions d’hectares. Egalement classee au titre de la convention internationale Ramsar depuis novembre 2008, ce site fait l’objet de programmes de conservation specifiques. Ces programmes visent notamment a la conservation des habitats subantarctiques en limitant l’impact des especes invasives.
Dans ce cadre, un plan de regulation de plusieurs especes introduites (rats, mouflons…) des îles Kerguelen est mis en place chaque annee. L’objectif etant de limiter leur impact sur le milieu et/ou sur les especes. Sous l’autorite du Prefet, administrateur superieur, et sous la responsabilite du conservateur de la reserve naturelle, le(la) volontaire civil(e) a l’aide technique (VCAT) mettra en oeuvre les differents projets de conservation.

- Tir de regulation sur les animaux introduits,
- Prospection par piegeage des îles ayant fait l’objet de programme de deratisation,
- Prospection des sites d’hivernage des rennes.

CERCOPAN (Centre for Education, Research and Conservation of Primates and Nature: www.cercopan.org) is recruiting for an Office and Finance Manager to start early March 2009. This voluntary position involves managing the office and finances of a busy primate rehabilitation (over 150 primates of 6 rainforest species) and conservation project in southern Nigeria. Duties include administrative work, personnel, project, and financial management. The role will also include assisting with fundraising, animal care (particularly incoming orphaned primates), primate rehabilitation and other miscellaneous tasks that often arise (e.g. photographing for adoption newsletter, managing blog).

We are looking for a self motivated, team player who is flexible, hard working, takes pride in their work, is amicable and able to cope well under stress.

This is a challenging and rewarding position for anyone interested in making a contribution to primate conservation.

Volunteer field assistant for white-faced capuchins, Costa Rica

Position Description:
I am looking for an independent and capable volunteer field assistant to participate in a study of male reproductive strategies in white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus). The field site is located in the dry tropical lowland forest of Santa Rosa National Park in northwestern Costa Rica.

While in the field, assistants will collect full-day behavioral observations, fecal samples for hormone analysis, fecal samples for parasite analysis, and once monthly phenology data. Other responsibilities include (but are not limited to) data entry, field processing of fecal samples, and trail cutting and maintenance.

This position is ideal for someone interested in gaining field experience in preparation for graduate school. You will learn various field methods relevant for the study of animal behavior, behavioral ecology, and socioendocrinology.

Qualifications/Experience:
• Preference will be given to applicants who hold an undergraduate degree in Biology, Ecology, Animal Behavior, Physical Anthropology, or other related fields.
• Experience working with primates is not necessary, though experience with animals, camping and/or working outdoors is strongly preferred.
• The ideal applicant should have prior experience with living or working in a foreign country, with special preference for developing countries.
• Knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but not necessary; however, a willingness to learn is expected.
• Applicants must:
o Be in good physical and mental condition;
o Be comfortable away from family and friends;
o Be emotionally mature, energetic, dedicated, very patient and have very good social skills, especially in small groups;
o Be willing to put up with insects, scorpions, snakes and other pests; being alone in the forest;
o Be able to maintain a positive and humorous attitude towards challenging, tiring, and sometimes frustrating work;
o Have a strong interest in primate behavior and want to have fun learning and working with them!

Salary/funding:
I will reimburse round-trip airfare to Costa Rica (up to $1000) upon completion of the arranged duration of the assistantship. I will also pay for the room fees for the last two months, and the internet fees.

Assistants are responsible for room fees for the first part of the field stay (US$10/day), food, any expenses related to time off or visa renewal, health and travel insurance, immunizations, personal field clothes, boots, and binoculars.

Ph.D. GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP

Ph.D. GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP is available beginning Aug 2009 within the Ecology Department, Montana State University (MSU) to work on nesting ecology of ducks in North and South Dakota. The research will investigate the role of winter wheat to nesting success at multiple spatial scales. Preliminary data suggest that nests in winter wheat fields may have high survival rates, and funding is now in place to conduct an intensive investigation of factors influencing nest survival in landscapes where a winter cereals program is in place. The student’s research advisor will be Jay Rotella. The work will be done in close conjunction with biologists and GIS specialists at the Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited. The project is funded for 4 years, and the assistantship pays $18,000 per year and includes an out-of-state tuition waiver. M.S. in wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, natural resource management, or related field is required. The successful applicant must have a GRE of over 1100 (verbal and quantitative).
