VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT

PhD Student in need of a field assistant forresearch investigating the mechanisms and consequences of avianinsectivore declines in Central America between 1 Jun - Aug 2009. I amseeking a highly motivated, reliable, and flexible assistant to workwith me at several field sites in northeastern Costa Rica, including LaSelva Biological Station and Tirimbina Rainforest Center. I aminvestigating the potential roles of two alternative mechanisms(food-limitation and microhabitat selection) in the declines ofrainforest understory insectivorous birds, including ruddy-tailedflycatcher (Terenotriccus erythrurus), golden-crowned spadebill(Platyrinchus coronatus), and several antwren species, in rainforestreserves. The field work will be varied, including bird foragingobservations and arthropod sampling, but the majority of the work willinvolve habitat structure data collection. Field work is intensive,involving fairly long days, long hikes and/or bicycle rides on oftenhilly and slippery terrain with backpacks full of water and field gear.Applicants should have significant progress towards a BS/BA (or higherdegree) in Biology, Ecology, or a related field. Previous experiencewith birds, arthropods, vegetation surveys, or other field work –especially tropical fieldwork - is preferable but not necessary. Astrong interest in fieldwork and the flexibility, durability, andtolerance to deal with occasionally difficult conditions (heat,humidity, biting and stinging insects, snakes, steep terrain) isessential. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not necessary, as we willmostly be at field stations with other English-speaking researchers;though a willingness to learn will greatly improve your experience. Theassistant must be detail-oriented and meticulous in data collection;experience with collecting systematic data in a scientific context ispreferred. In general, applicants should be in good physical and mentalcondition, and able to maintain a positive and humorous attitude towardschallenging and tiring work. In exchange for this, applicants willobtain a variety of valuable research skills, and will work in gorgeouslocations with excellent birding opportunities. Room and board and alltravel within Central America will be covered, but no stipend will beprovided. I will cover at least half of the travel expenses to CostaRica, with the remainder possible, depending on funding. Field assistant: Long-tailed macaques, Sumatra, Indonesia

Description:
We are looking for a field assistant for a PhD project investigating the costs of mate guarding in male long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). The study will be conducted in the Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra, Indonesia.The work of the field assistant will include habituation of macaques and (if the habituation process is successful), behavioural data collection on males as well as faecal and urine sample collection for hormone, protein and genetic analyses.
The project is supervised by Dr Antje Engelhardt from the German Primate Centre.
Qualifications/Experience:
A Bachelor degree in Anthropology, biology, ecology or any other relevant field is required.
The language in our team will be English but the willingness to learn basic Bahasa Indonesia is expected.
Previous field experience is welcome but not required.
Priority will be given to applicants with successful experience collecting behavioural data from individually recognized mammals.
Experience of working in tropical conditions under demanding physical exercise is helpful as monkeys are followed from dawn to dusk (13h a day; 5days a week) in a tropical rainforest.
In general, applicants should:
- be physically fit and mentally strong with very good social skills
- be able to work independently within our team
- feel comfortable living under basic conditions and being far away from family/friends
- be willing to adapt to a foreign culture
- be emotionally mature, friendly, energetic and very patient
- be able to maintain a positive attitude towards hard and tiring work.
Salary/funding:
Food and lodging for the assistant will be covered by the project. In addition the assistant will receive a small stipend (100 € per month), but only after successful completion of the first 6 months of work.
Airfare, in-country transportation, insurance and visa/permit fees have to be covered by the assistant.of work.

Position Description:
Under the supervision of the colony manager will assist in managing a colony of approximately 1700 non human primates (NHP). The Research Specialist is responsible for collecting data and performing procedures that are pertinent to the health and stability of the breeding colonies. These responsibilities include but are not limited to, following standard operating procedures (SOP), collection and analysis of behavioral data, collection and processing of biological samples, tattooing, vaccinations, administering anesthesia and recovery, and maintaining lab database records. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
Qualifications/Experience:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Strong consideration given to those applicants that have previous or current nonhuman primate experience.
Knowledge of Excel and Word or comparable spreadsheet and word processing programs is also preferred.
Familiarity with primate behavior and data collection methods is a plus.
Position requires a high degree of motivation and ability to perform in a dynamic environment. Must be able to work independently and as a team in accomplishing daily tasks.
