2-year MSc project

Position: 2-year MSc project on boredom in farm animals at the Dalhousie University’s Agricultural Campus in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. The project will experimental work with dairy cattle (some potential to work with other farmed species). Ideal candidates will have a BSc in animal science, zoology or related fields, some experience in behavioural observations, and be independent and motivated.

 

The project is funded via an NSERC Discovery grant.

 

The candidate would be joining a research group working on animal behaviour and welfare in a range of farmed species, with active international connections. Through Dalhousie and the Mitacs program, they will have access to training sessions in relevant professional skills, and gain experience communicating with industry and academic audiences. Proposed start: January or May 2025

Stipend: $26,000 year 1 + $25,000 year 2, minus tuition fees.

Funded PhD Scholarship - Are we making urban wildlife sick?

Applicants are being sought for a 3-year fully-funded PhD to study wild animal welfare. In this exciting project, we will look at the impact of parasites and pathogens on the welfare of urban fox and hedgehog populations. The project is funded by the Wild Animal Initiative, will be based at the University of Lincoln, and combines lab work with innovative methods to test animal welfare in the field. Funding covers home tuition fees, monthly stipend, and research expenses.


Why study the welfare of urban wildlife? Most of the world’s human population now lives within cities, and urbanization is expected to continue to increase globally, reaching 66% of the world’s population by 2050. Cities therefore represent one of the biggest sources of human impact on wildlife. Catastrophic declines in urban wildlife due to diseases (e.g., rabies and sarcoptic mange), for instance, have been widely documented, but whether this arises, in part, from poor animal welfare within cities is unknown. Thus, to ensure the future welfare of wild animals in light of prevailing threats imposed by global urbanisation, there remains a pressing need to better understand when, where, and how cities are making them sick.
Why wild foxes and hedgehogs? We will study two species, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). Foxes are of particular interest because they are one of the most widespread carnivores on the planet, thrive within cities, and are vectors for zoonotic disease transmission to other urban wildlife. Hedgehogs are of interest because, in recent years, studies have documented a rapid decline in their numbers throughout countries like the UK, which is due, in part, to urbanisation. The fact that both species live sympatrically and show strikingly different levels of success within urban habitats offers a unique opportunity to identify common environmental stressors that may be impacting the health and welfare of urban wildlife more generally.
What will you do? This study will be carried out at two scales: firstly, we will link pathogen loads, faecal glucocortoicoids and habitat at the landscape level, allowing us to broadly understand if urbanisation is associated with increased pathogen loads. We will then carry out a second, more detailed data collection where we will combine pathogen data with measures of stress (infra-red thermography, faecal glucocorticoids) and behavioural measures of affective valence (judgement bias tests). Here, we will link together pathogen loads and different measures of welfare at the individual level.
Eligibility: We are looking for an enthusiastic student with the following general qualities: 1) background in animal welfare, parasitology, and/or a related discipline (e.g., animal behaviour), 2) experience conducting fieldwork with wild animals (e.g., trail cameras, infra-red thermography, psychometric tests), 3) a valid UK/EU driving license, 4) a vehicle for driving on countryside roads, and 5) a proficiency, or willingness to become proficient, in data analysis using R.

Description du Projet
La transformation progressive de la forêt Amazonienne en zones urbaines et agricoles entraîne la perte
et la fragmentation de l’habitat des félins en Guyane. L’anthropisation du territoire favorise également
une proximité accrue des félins avec les populations guyanaises ; générant des conflits avec les éleveurs.
Depuis 2018, l’association HISA recense une centaine d’attaques chaque année, et a observé que plus
de la moitié des éleveurs guyanais sont concernés par ces interactions. Faute de moyens pour protéger
leurs animaux, les tirs de représailles restent une mesure encore trop fréquemment employée par
certains pour faire face au problème.
En réponse à cette problématique, l'association HISA a lancé le projet COFEEL (COexistence FElins-
Eleveurs) afin de relever les défis de la coexistence. En 2020, pour répondre à l’urgence, HISA a déployé
plusieurs dispositifs de protection sur diverses exploitations en Guyane, tels que des dispositifs lumineux
(Foxlight), des clôtures électriques, ou encore l'acquisition de chiens de protection de race Kangal.
Bien que la littérature scientifique ait largement démontré l'efficacité des chiens Kangal dans la
protection des troupeaux à travers le monde (Namibie, France métropolitaine, Turquie), le manque de
moyens financiers n'a permis d'acquérir qu'un nombre limité de chiens. Cette limitation a entravé la
capacité d’HISA à mener une évaluation rigoureuse et statistique de l'efficacité de cette mesure chez
les éleveurs volontaires. Néanmoins, les premières observations réalisées chez ces derniers, très
satisfaits du dispositif, sont prometteuses.
Afin de mieux évaluer l'efficacité de cette mesure et la proposer plus largement aux éleveurs de la
région, HISA souhaite donc approfondir son évaluation. Cela impliquera l'établissement de protocoles
d'évaluation rigoureux, l'acquisition de nouveaux chiens et la formation des éleveurs et des chiens.
Missions Principales
• Coordination du projet : Gérer et superviser l'ensemble des activités du projet.
• Recherche Bibliographique : Conduire une recherche exhaustive sur les chiens Kangal et les
méthodes de protection des troupeaux.
• Création et Gestion du Réseau d’Experts : Mettre en place et maintenir un réseau d'experts
nationaux et internationaux.
• Sélection et Suivi des Éleveurs : Identifier et sélectionner les éleveurs participants, caractériser
les sites d'étude et assurer le suivi régulier.
• Développement de Protocoles : Élaborer des protocoles pour la sélection, l'éducation des
chiens, l'installation de la méthode et l'évaluation de l'impact environnemental – et les mettre
en application.
• Acquisition et Intégration des Chiens : Gérer l'acquisition, l'importation et l'intégration des
chiens Kangal dans les fermes.
• Organisation d'Ateliers : Planifier et organiser des ateliers de partage d'expérience et de
sensibilisation.
• Suivi, évaluation et analyse des premiers résultats obtenus : Effectuer le suivi mensuel des
fermes et collecter des données pertinentes. Premières analyses des données collectées.
• Communication et Diffusion : Participer à la réalisation de reportages, rédiger des rapports
semestriels et diffuser les résultats du projet.
Profil Recherché
• Master (ou équivalent) en conservation de la biodiversité, biologie, environnement, ou domaine
similaire.
• Minimum 3 ans d'expérience dans le domaine de la conservation de la biodiversité, biologie,
environnement, ou domaine similaire.
• Au moins 2 ans d'expérience dans une unité technique ou un institut de recherche.

Post doc

 

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mosquito Physiology and Behaviour, 3 years, Durham, UK
This research project is based in the InsectNeuroLab (Durham, UK), led by Dr Olena Riabinina, collaboration with Dr Marcus Blagrove (Liverpool, UK) and Prof Thomas Schmitt (Wuerzburg, Germany), and is funded by the Leverhulme Trust for 3 years. The project will investigate the physiological and behavioural mechanisms that Anopheles, Aedes and Culex pupae employ to avoid desiccation when taken out of their aquatic habitat. We will evaluate the timing of survival in various climatic conditions (humidity, temperature), as well as pupal behaviour in response to sensory stimuli that may point them towards water. We will also investigate how cuticular hydrocarbon composition on pupal exuvia aid desiccation prevention and survival.
 
The successful applicant will be expected to work independently, be highly self-motivated and self-driven, with clear focus on developing their academic career. The ability to interact with lab members in a collaborative and friendly manner is paramount. The post holder will design experiments, collect and analyse data, and prepare manuscripts for publication. At least one of the following experiences is essential for this post, while the remaining two are desirable: 1) Experience in designing behavioural assays and setups, and collecting behavioural data; 2) Experience in insect/mosquito colony maintenance; 3) Experience of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry data collection and analysis. Ability to work flexibly, including on weekends/holidays as required for emergencies and mosquito colony maintenance is essential.
 
Part of the data collections will be conducted in London, Liverpool and Wuerzburg, thus the ability to travel to and work at these locations for several days to several weeks is required. The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with the lab members of the three collaborating labs and will be given the opportunity to co-supervise junior lab members (undergraduate placements, summer projects, etc). The post holder will also be given an opportunity to present their work at lab meetings, departmental meetings and events, at national and international conferences, as well as engage with public during public-facing events.

PhD position: Cultural behavior and conservation of wild chimpanzees

Topic: The behavior and cognition of modern humans (Homo sapiens) uniquely enables knowledge and culture to accumulate over generations. How and why these powerful abilities evolved remains a conundrum, especially for traits that leave little fossil record, such as communication and perishable tool use. A promising avenue of investigation is conducting comparative research on our closest living relatives, especially chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), who show a number of similar and rare traits with modern humans (e.g. prosocial behavior, prolonged juvenile development, flexible tool use, cultural traits, etc.).
This PhD project will assess the extent to which current levels of illegal human activity in the Tai National Park impact the diversity of cultural traits across four habituated chimpanzee communities of the Tai Chimpanzee Project. Illegal human activity varies considerably with the two communities closest to the park boundary (North and South) suffering much higher rates of illegal human activity than the two communities deeper in the park (East and North East). The PhD has three objectives.
Objective 1. Document change in diversity of cultural traits across four chimpanzee communities.
Objective 2. Assess change in illegal hunting activity across the territories of four chimpanzee communities.
Objective 3. Investigate the impact of change in illegal hunting activity on diversity of cultural traits.

Context: You will be joining the Ape Social Mind Lab team (at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences (ISC-MJ) in Lyon, France), which is exploring questions related to the evolution of sociality, social cognition, communication and culture in primates. Reporting to team leaders Roman WITTIG and Catherine CROCKFORD, you will become a member of an international team.
Field work will be conducted at the Tai Chimpanzee Project (TCP), a long-term field site operating since 45 years. The Tai National Park is located in the south-west of the Ivory Coast and home to four chimpanzee communities habituated to human observers. TCP is at the forefront of research in wild chimpanzees and partnered with the Centre Suisse de Recherche Scientifique en Cote d'Ivoire (CSRS). CSRS in Abidjan is a leading institution for research on biodiversity and conservation in Cote d'Ivoire and will be your host institution while conducting your PhD research in the field. Two field trips to TCP of longer duration (6-9 months) are necessary to conduct the research.

Condition: Condition for the PhD is a Masters in Biology, Psychology or Anthropology (or any related subject). Experience in detailed behavioral observations of primates or social mammals under field conditions will be of great advantage. Fluency in English (in speaking and writing) and French is conditional.
Data collection will be conducted with the wild chimpanzees in the Tai National Park, in Cote d'Ivoire. The successful candidate needs excellent stress resilience for the field work, very good physical condition (long working hours hiking with the chimps through the primary rain forest), ability to integrate into a team, and live and work in social isolation (only sporadic internet and phone contact).

PhD: You will conduct your thesis in the Doctoral School for Neuroscience and Cognition at the University of Lyon in France under supervision of Roman WITTIG and Catherine CROCKFORD. An additional supervisor will be Inza KONE, Professor at the University Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
