Field Assistants needed immediately for a community ecology / invasion biology study in the Samoan ArchipleagoI am currently conducting field experiments on the influence of mutualisms between Morinda citrifolia (Nonu) and Anoplolepis gracilipes (Yellow Crazy Ant-an invasive insect in Samoa) on (i) the dynamics of the yellow crazy ant invasion of Samoa and (ii) the response of native plant and arthropod communities to the invader.There are now positions available for field assistants for this project. I request that field assistants commit to work on this project for at least one month. However, this is an ongoing project, so interested applicants can work up to 6 months as a field assistant. Duties include assisting in the maintenance of plot-level manipulative experiments (including limited vegetation clearing), conducting surveys of ants, plants, and nectar excreting arthropods across the Samoan Archipelago, assisting with short-term behavioral ecology experiments, mapping vegetation dynamics, and collecting and sorting samples of arthropod communities.Field assistants are expected to pay for their own travel expenses. AnthropologyPosition Description:For an ongoing study on the behavioural ecology of bonobos, we are searching for one field assistant. The work of the assistant will include collection of data on the ecology and behaviour of bonobos at Lui Kotale, Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Currently, field work is focussed on one habituated community. Candidates are expected to contribute to ongoing projects by collecting behavioural data and field samples to supplement the work of other field workers (senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students).Qualifications/Experience:Essential requirements are high resistance to psychological and physical stress, and basic skills in collecting behavioural and ecological data. Field work requires long-distance walking (up to 30km per day) and working time often exceeds 10 hours per day. Given the difficult terrain and the extreme climate, work demands not only physical fitness but also high motivation. The proximity to other persons can lead to psychological stress and candidates must be able to adapt to the extreme living conditions at the field site.As most members of the research crew speak English, this language is usually sufficient for communication within the research team. However, for communication with local assistants skills in French and African languages such as Lingal are required and cadidates with suchskills will be preferred.Salary/funding:300 Euro per monthSupport provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):The project will cover all costs for visa and the expenses for domestic flights. It also contributes up to 800 Euro to the international return ticket. This money will be re-imbursed only AFTER successful completion of a 9 month term of appointment. Incubating birds face an interesting trade-off between self-maintenance and maintaining favourable egg temperature for optimal embryo development. It is usually thought that only parents provide the favourable thermal environment needed for optimal development of their offspring and this can be relatively costly to the parent, particularly when only one parent incubates. However, the offspring might also play an active role, for example by adjusting their own production of metabolic heat; such changes will have negative as well as positive consequences. To understand optimal avian incubation strategies, we really need to know how embryos respond to changes in conditions and this will be the main focus in this studentship.Objectives: The studentship will look at how embryos respond to changes in incubation conditions using novel instrumentation that is able to record embryo heart rate non-invasively in the field. The student will design experiments to test a number of hypotheses.Applications are invited from students who either hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second class Honours degree in a relevant subject or who hold a relevant Masters degree.
