 AFBI is currently looking for a post-doc researcher to work on a project on alternative production systems for pigs (21 month contract, start date early 2023).

 The post-doc will design, conduct and analyse two trials and create scientific and popular outputs based on the results.

In the first trial pigs will be integrated into an agroforestry system, to study the effects of tree density on paddock quality and thus pig welfare and environmental impact.  

The second trial will focus on the effect of different bedding materials on pig welfare in intensive conditions.

 

The post-doc will work in the Animal Welfare Unit of AFBI’s Livestock Production Sciences Branch, with further support from the Monogastric Unit and the Agri-Environment Branch.

The project sits within the larger project ONEWELPIG which is carried out in collaboration with Teagasc, Queen’s university Belfast and University College Dublin.

Responsibilities

The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

Under supervision of the Research Program Manager, provide research technical support to studies involving therapies for human diseases. Research programs focused on functional rehabilitation recovery after spinal cord injury research and research in aging and gene therapy for mental illness diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.  Responsible for training and testing monkeys to perform complex tasks, such as reaching, grasping, and lifting objects; locomotion on a treadmill; and exploration in an open field cage. Collect data using computerized tablets. Perform data entry and prepare data summaries. Assist with monitoring animal health and social enrichment activities. Provide assistance and support in surgery, necropsy, physicals, and other animal laboratory science technical procedures necessary to fulfill project goals.

Communicate with coworkers and a wide variety of Center staff to support project experiments and goals; and periodic travel to attend scientific meetings. The incumbent in this position is required to provide support after-hours, weekends and holidays, and be available for emergency support as required.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

• Academic background in neuroscience, biological science, physiology or exercise science, psychology or animal behavior, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and professional technical experience.
• Experience handling non-human primates to assess animal health and to provide basic acute care support.
• Experience with MS Office including Word Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, and ability to operate computerized and electronic devices (such as tablets).

• Knowledge in principles and modes of animal conditioning, training, and behavioral assessment.
• Skills to conduct functional rehabilitative testing and training with research animals (nonhuman primates), including fine motor skills, whole-body locomotion, and sensory-motor testing.
• Skills to develop behavioral and functional assessment testing protocols, including developing standardized operating procedures for experimental use and associated data collection methodologies.
• Communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate and work collegially with on-site and off-site personnel. Organizational and time management skills.
• Skills to perform laboratory procedures necessary for performance of work in BioSafety Level (BSL) 2+.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience in the principles of behavior and neurobiology research, managing immune-suppression protocols, and performing both basic diagnostics and laboratory techniques.

 

·         Skills to work in a surgical and sterile environment including setting up surgical equipment and preparation of experimental treatments and tracking devices.

 

 

·         Technical experience in animal health and safety procedures for nonhuman primates.

 

·         Skills to clean, order supplies, and maintain organization within a research laboratory.

 

 

·         Knowledge of Primate Center policies.

Descriptif du service :

Le parc zoologique d’Amiens Métropole, situé en plein centre-ville, compte 700 animaux de 120 espèces différentes allant de l’otarie au ouistiti sur une superficie de 7 hectares.

Près de 170 000 visiteurs y ont été accueillis en 2021 dont en moyenne 35 000 scolaires.

Le parc zoologique doit remplir trois missions distinctes : la conservation (participer aux plans de conservation in et ex-situ), la recherche (oeuvrer pour l’avancée des connaissances scientifiques) et l’éducation (informer, éduquer et sensibiliser).

L’équipe du parc zoologique dénombre 53 agents sur le site.

Missions principales :

Dans le cadre de la modernisation de la pédagogie et de la rénovation du parc, le Zoo d’Amiens Métropole souhaite faire une étude comparative et une évaluation de l’attractivité et de l’efficacité des supports et activités pédagogiques en place. Les missions du candidat recruté seront les suivantes :

- Elaborer le protocole d'observation ;

- Réaliser les observations en respectant le protocole ;

Position:

Our hardworking caregivers provide excellent care to 6 chimpanzees with safety and reliability. This position reports to the Operations Manager and works with high integrity as part of a diverse and creative team. This is a labor intensive, physically demanding job with great experiential rewards and lots of laughs!

Job Duties:

● Cleans and disinfects indoor and outdoor enclosures daily.

● Prepares and serves meals; administers vitamins and medications as directed.

● Safely transfers chimpanzees to and from various areas within the facility and unlocks enclosures for regular cleaning and maintenance.

● Launders bedding and toys.

● Develops, constructs, and prepares daily enrichment.

● Maintains work areas, common areas and equipment; clean and functional.

● Receives, examines, sorts and rotates produce often for freshness.

● Records and evaluates chimps' physical, social, and psychological wellness and needs.

● Maintains a strong connection to the needs of the team, the sanctuary and the community.

En Côte d'Ivoire, les chimpanzés sont victimes de l'expansion humaine mais aussi d'un trafic criminel organisé de bébés chimpanzés qui sont vendus principalement à l'étranger.

Les chimpanzés sont entièrement protégés par les lois internationales et ivoiriennes.

Akatia est une organisation ivoirienne visant à protéger les chimpanzés et les primates et en train de créer un sanctuaire pour les orphelins confisqués. Akatia est actuellement à la recherche de volontaires enthousiastes et motivés pour acquérir une expérience unique dans une organisation de conservation in situ tout en apportant leurs compétences au projet.

Nos missions de base de bénévolat comprennent:

West African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus ) are critically endangered due to the alarming disappearance of their habitat, the illegal trafficking of their meat and babies. In Cote d'Ivoire, chimpanzees are victims of human expansion but also of an organized criminal trafficking of baby chimpanzees that are sold mostly abroad.

 Chimpanzees are fully protected by international and Ivoirian laws.

 Akatia is an Ivoirian organization aiming to protect chimpanzees and primates and in the process of creating a sanctuary for confiscated orphans. 

Akatia is currently looking for enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to gain unique experience in an in-situ conservation organization while bringing their skills to the project.

Our basic Volunteer missions   Include :

  1 . Help with the rehabilitation of chimpanzees :

        Bush walks in the forest with the chimpanzees all day

      Clean the night cages and wash the youngest chimpanzees doudous

        Help in the care of newly arrived babies

  2 . Participation in the daily life of the project :

        Preparing meals for the volunteer team, cleaning communal areas, camp maintenance, etc.

       Shopping trips for the chimps and volunteers

        Participation if necessary in the maintenance of structures and development of the infrastructures for the chimpanzees and the camp

        Participation in any other particular on-going project in progress according to the skills such as the creation of the new sanctuary site and supervising construction projects

 Required profile   :

         Available immediately

 Proposition de stage Master 2 (Janvier-Juin 2023) Encadrantes : Sophie LUMINEAU, Isabelle GEORGE & Cécilia Houdelier Structure de recherche : UMR CNRS 6552 Ethologie Animale et Humaine Lieu du stage : Campus de Beaulieu, 265 avenue du Général Leclerc, 35042 Rennes. Titre du stage : Effet de la musique sur la socialité chez la caille (Coturnix c. japonica). Résumé du stage : L’écoute de la musique par les animaux domestiques influence-t-elle réellement leurs comportements ? Le rôle de la musique en tant que régulateur de l’état émotionnel voire stimulateur des interactions sociales positives reste un sujet d‘étude d’actualité chez les vertébrés. La question de la nature des rythmes et/ou des fréquences de la musique utilisée est primordiale pour discriminer les effets positifs ou négatifs de l’écoute de ces stimulations sonores, en comparaison à la réponse à des bruits contrôles. Au cours de ce stage, nous chercherons à savoir si l’écoute d’une musique, composée spécialement pour l’étude en référence aux vocalisations de l’espèce, va stimuler l’expression des comportements sociaux chez les oiseaux, et en particulier faciliter l’émergence des interactions sociales positives entre partenaires. Ce travail sera mené sur la caille japonaise, modèle d’oiseau nidifuge, au répertoire vocal très diversifié, mais considéré comme oiseau non apprenant vocalement. L’hypothèse est que l’effet de la musique sera plus limité chez cette espèce que chez des espèces d’oiseaux dits chanteurs. Ce stage s’inscrit dans un projet collaboratif avec le LECD de Paris Nanterre Université et Le LNCA de Strasbourg, financé par l’Agence Nationale pour la Recherche. Le projet est une étude comparative des effets de la musique sur les comportements sociaux d’oiseaux chanteurs et non chanteurs et de primates humains et non humains.
