Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Farm Animal Well-Being

The Department of Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison seeks an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Farm Animal Well-Being. This is a tenure-track faculty position with a mission split of 70% Extension and 30% Research. This specialist will provide leadership in applied research and extension programming regarding the well-being of dairy cattle, secure significant levels of funding from public and private sources, and build an internationally recognized program that will meet the diverse needs of Wisconsin’s dairy industry. The research and extension activities of this specialist will focus on the interaction between dairy herd management practices and key areas of animal welfare concern. In this manner, the specialist will address rapidly evolving societal and consumer concerns relative to animal welfare and animal well-being and will help ensure that negative publicity and legal challenges do not threaten the economic viability of Wisconsin’s $26 billion dairy industry. By providing humane, science-based solutions to the diverse management needs of our industry, this specialist will help dairy farmers meet consumer demands for an adequate supply of affordable, safe, and nutritious food that is produced in an environmentally sustainable manner from healthy, well-treated farm animals. The successful candidate will mentor graduate students and collaborate with other researchers in the Department of Dairy Science and throughout the University of Wisconsin – Madison campus. The successful candidate will also contribute to the instructional mission of the Department of Dairy Science and participate in professional and university service activities associated with faculty rank at a world-class public university.

Candidates must have a D.V.M. and/or Ph.D. degree in dairy science, animal sciences, veterinary medicine, or a related field. Post-doctoral experience or industry experience is desired.
