The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £31,905 – £38,594 per annum,
inclusive of London Allowance.

A full-time post-doctoral position in patch-clamp electrophysiology is available to work on a concerted, multi-disciplinary and international research project funded by the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) that will use behavioural, molecular biological, optogenetic and electrophysiological techniques to explore the mechanisms of species-specific acoustic communication in different Drosophila species (Project title: From genes to circuits: the evolution of species-specific communication in Drosophila;

The successful applicant’s work will comprise (i) the design, and execution, of patch-clamp recordings of neurons involved in sound detection and sound production, and (ii) the written preparation of research findings for presentations and publications.

Funding for this post is initially available for 24 months.

The project will be supervised by Dr Joerg Albert and may involve short-term stays in the labs of project collaborators, e.g. at the universities of Princeton, USA or Tokyo, Japan.

The latest start date is May 2012.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a neurobiological subject and should have substantial experience, knowledge, and skills in patch-clamp electrophysiology. A familiarity with insect acoustic communication and basic aspects of Drosophila biology (fly husbandry, UAS/GAL4, ect.) is desirable but not essential.
