PHD STUDENTSHIP: EPIGENETICS AND MEMORY

Queen Mary, University of London

Description

Project Outline:

How does life experience shape the brain and behavior? A major research challenge in biomedicine and psychology is to elucidate the molecular and cellular processes that mediate long-term, experience-dependent changes in brain function.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship to study the role of epigenetics in memory formation. The aim of this interdisciplinary PhD project is to determine the role of epigenetic mechanisms in a powerful learning-and-memory paradigm developed over the last 20 years.

Using a model organism, the successful applicant will combine state-of-the-art epigenomic, molecular and cellular biological techniques with genomics, bioinformatics, behavioral biology and neuroanatomy. This truly multidisciplinary project will enable the student to integrate into more than one aspect of the School’s research community. Furthermore, the integration of “wet” work with in silico analyses (bioinformatics) will provide the student with a highly desirable skill set, greatly enhancing future career prospects.

Qualifications

Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates with, or expecting to be awarded, at least an upper-second class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in an area relevant to the project (e.g. molecular biology, biochemistry or neuroscience). Applications from candidates with prior research experience or Masters-level training are particularly welcome. Fluency in English is required; international students are required to provide evidence of their proficiency in English language skills.

Salary

This three-year studentship is available from 1st October 2013. Funding will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at 15,590 GBP per annum.

Application details

Informal enquiries are welcome; contact Paul Hurd directly ( p.j.hurd@qmul.ac.uk). The deadline for applications is 31st January 2013.
