Postdoc in Conservation strategies: their attributes, classification, application, implications, and emergent properties

implications, and emergent properties »
The project is a part of Professor Atte Moilanen’s studies in « Biodiversity Conservation Informatics (BCI) »,
within the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Metapopulation Biology, Department of Biosciences, University of
Helsinki, Finland. It concerns research at the crossroads of ecology, conservation biology and decision
analysis, with an emphasis on developing ecologicallyjustified and operationally functional methods for
targeting resources of biodiversity conservation and other land uses. The project has good contacts both
globally and within the Finnish environmental administration. There are approximately ten researchers and
assisting personnel working in BCIfor 2013-2015.
Position for post doc researcher: The BCIgroup will hire a post doctoral researcher to collaborate in the
field of conservation biology in a project about the analysis of properties of conservation strategies, an
inadequately understood section of conservation biology. A suitable candidate already has documented
research experience, but it is possible that people withvaried backgrounds could succeed in the project. The
team of researchers who will be involved include Prof. Moilanen, Dos. Jussi Laitila (mathematician), a PhD
student, and the post doc to be employed by this announcement. The position offers a view to policy-relevant
cutting edge research in a highly international environment. The details of the project will be tuned to the
experience and skills of the person chosen.
Requirements for a successful candidate are:
• A PhD degree completed before or during spring 2013 is mandatory. It could be from, but is
not limited to, the fields of ecology, environmental sciences or geography.
• Good writing skills
• Good English language skills
• Some understanding of / interest in conservation biology
Other experience that will be counted as a merit includes:
• Experience in statistical analysis, GIS, programming or other such methods
• All the things that are normally counted as a positive for a young researcher
Duration: From 1.4.2012 (earliest) to end of 2015 (2 yrs, 9 months).
There will be a standard trial period in the beginning.
Salary:This is a Kone Foundationpost doc grant, which includes a fixed compensation of 2500€/month, tax
free up to currently € 19.444,88 on a yearly basis. The position includes pension benefits (as a salary position)
