The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) at UC Davis is an Organized Research Unit which conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to its missions of teaching and service.
Job Summary
Under the direction of Program Services Manager and in
accordance with Federal and state regulation, UCD IACUC approved protocols, the
Center's Environmental Enhancement Plan and industry standards, lead,
coordinate, perform, and analyze full range of behavioral observations and
assessments to identify prospective social partners in the indoor colony,
prepare for social introductions, execute social introductions, including
behavioral data collection and entry, communication with Animal Care, Primate
Medicine, Research Services, PIs, as well as ongoing compatibility monitoring.
Provide behavioral observations and assessments on project animals per project
aims, care plans, and protocols. Supporting colony animal well-being, including
performing behavioral observations (normal and abnormal) and assessment
technical support to maintain animal colony socialization and behavioral
monitoring management. Employing practices to assure animals are well cared for
to be included in research projects.
Perform, coordinate, and analyze full range of behavioral observations and
assessments to identify, treat and monitor animals exhibiting behavioral indicators
of psychological distress.
Perform regulatory duties to include supporting and maintaining animal colony
socialization and data collection and documentation in accordance with the
Animal Welfare Act, AAALAC, IACUC and the CNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan.
Population and Behavioral Health Services is responsible for the psychological
well-being of non-human primates at the CNPRC, which is a critical component of
Colony Operations to ensure adequate levels of animal welfare and increase the
quality, rigor, and reproducibility of scientific data gained from the animals.
The ability to exercise good judgment in program compliance and operations
management regarding animal behavioral health and behavioral evaluation and
monitoring are the greatest responsibility required of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
-Bachelor Degree in Animal Behavioral Science; or applied technical training in animal behavioral science; or the equivalent combination of education, training, and professional technical experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
-Experience with applied principles of animal behavioral research with a focus on animal behavioral assessment and socialization enrichment practices, and training and conditioning, both traditional practices and new innovative practices such as positive reinforcement training of animals.
-Experience in the conduct, documentation, and evaluation of animal introductions for socialization enrichment.
-Experience in training others in nonhuman-primate behavior and assessment practices, experience and applied knowledge of learning principles and techniques such as operant and classical conditioning. Experience in behavioral data collection methods, analysis of normal and abnormal behavior in both indoor housed and outdoor animals.
-Experience utilizing formal behavioral observation methods and techniques to collect, record, monitor, and analyze normal and abnormal behavior and social interactions between nonhuman primates in small indoor/outdoor cages, large group enclosures and smaller Corn Crib enclosures.
-Experience and applied knowledge of regulations pertaining to animal welfare and management of research and colony animals including UC campus policy and procedures, USDA, ILAR, AALAS, and AAALAC.
-Experience in working with nonhuman primates, which includes performing net capture and restraint of nonhuman primates in outdoor corrals. Experience assessing the condition of animals and making the appropriate judgment to determine when an animal requires veterinary attention. Experience in recognizing changes in animal physical appearance or behavior.
-Behavioral experience to work with macaques and titi monkeys, ranging from infants weighing < 1 pound to adults weighing >30 pounds, safely and in a manner that promotes animal welfare.
-Experience in assessing and analyzing normal and abnormal behavior in both indoor housed and outdoor animals. Experience utilizing formal behavioral observation methods and techniques to monitor, record and analyze social interactions between nonhuman primates in small indoor/outdoor cages, large group enclosures and smaller Corn Crib enclosures.
-Experience in research project management principles and practices that include creating project summaries/reports, research data collection, and laboratory protocols/SOP's; and managing project expenses, billing/recharge of services provided, and communicating with multiple PIs/researchers. Experience in applied experimental design and statistical analysis.
-Experience to collect behavioral and enrichment data, MS Excel and MS Access to perform data evaluation and analyses.
Preferred:
-Experience in instructional design concepts that include adult education learning theory and program design in training development and applied on-the-job-training techniques and methods.
-Experience to apply both formal and project-based specific behavioral observation methods and techniques to monitor record and analyze a variety of social interactions between nonhuman primates in small indoor/outdoor cages, large group enclosures and smaller Corn Crib enclosures.
-Experience in scientific research support. Familiarity and previous use of analytic tools and exposure to new analytic methodologies used by professionals in the field of animal care management in a large biomedical research facility.
-Experience in applied experimental design and statistical analysis. Skill to organize data and prepare written summaries, developing animal protocols and demographics reporting and data analyses.
-Skills to communicate and interact with supervisors, veterinary staff and research investigators.
-Experience managing complex projects, where organizational skills and attention to detail are essential to meet operational goals.
-Animal Technologist (LATG) certification.
-American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) technician certification: Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT).
-Experience and training in biosafety conditions level 1-3 to adhere to biohazard containment procedures necessary to perform duties.
