Job posting - Assistant Director, Lester Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, Lincoln Park Zoo

GENERAL SUMMARY

Provides administrative and leadership support for the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes while guiding a suite of research activities aimed at furthering the mission of the Center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinates with the Center Director to provide strategic leadership for the Center.  
  • Administers a multidisciplinary research program that focuses on studies of primate behavior, welfare, and cognition in line with Lincoln Park Zoo’s mission.   This includes all aspects of the scientific process from the development of novel research, designing and administering studies, organization and analysis of data, and dissemination of resulting information through oral presentations and written publications aimed a variety of audiences
  • Trains and supervises research assistants administering touchscreen and eye-tracking research with chimpanzees, gorillas, and Japanese macaques
  • Works to mentor junior scientists, including research interns, in their professional development
  • Assists with educational programs interpreting research methods and findings to zoo guests
  • Assists with grant writing and stewardship, including meeting with donors and other funders
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary committees to support the zoo’s mission
  • The ability to work some evenings, holidays, and weekends as required
  • Performs other research and administrative duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Doctoral degree in biology, psychology, anthropology, zoology or related field
  • Experience in the administration of a research program (multiple studies) that includes both behavioral and cognition foci and familiar with both observational and experimental research paradigms
  • Supervisory and mentoring experience
  • Grant writing experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite as well as statistical analysis software (R preferred)
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Works well in a team environment as well as independently
  • Ability to interact well with a range of stakeholders including other scientists, animal care staff, administrators, donors, educators, visitors and external consultants or vendors.
