Post-doctoral position in Teagasc, Ireland: Using a 'One Welfare' framework to develop alternative high welfare pig production systems
This position will fund a Post-Doctoral fellow for almost 3 years as part of a larger project aiming to improve the sustainability of pig farming in Ireland, by identifying ways to optimise animal, human and environmental welfare. The project will thus use a One Welfare framework that recognises the interconnectedness of animals, humans, and the environment they share. This particular role will involve working with small scale producers to evaluate existing alternative systems of producing pigs in terms of indicators relevant to the animal (e.g. behaviour, health), human (e.g. quality of life, income) and environment (e.g. biodiversity, soil health) thereby providing the first objective information on the practices in place in this sector in Ireland. The data that is generated will inform environmental and social life cycle assessment models as well as biosecurity protocols. We are hoping to recruit a scientist with experience in either animal or environmental research, and at least a keen interest, even if limited experience, in the other scientific field. Training will be provided so that the scientist becomes proficient in all areas that they don’t already have experience in. The successful candidate will be based at Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork in Ireland’s leading pig research institute, the Teagasc Pig Development Department. However travel around the entire island of Ireland will be an integral part of the position, as field work will be carried out on commercial farms. Funding is provided by the Irish department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine research stimulus fund.
