The Department of Archaeology is seeking to appoint a University Lecturer in Human Origins and early evolution, to start on 1 September 2020, or as soon thereafter as possible. The successful candidate will be active in research and committed to teach in early human evolutionary studies. Applications are welcome in all branches of palaeoanthropology, although preference may be given to those with research experience and expertise in hominin palaeontology, especially early hominins.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the formulation of a new generation of intellectually-driven research and undergraduate and graduate teaching in Biological Anthropology, working within the framework and opportunities of a radically enlarged new Department committed to interdisciplinary approaches. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute actively to the University’s aim of developing wider strategic connections and initiatives. The appointment made will be permanent, subject to a probationary period of five years.

The Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior is an international research institute dedicated to achieving a quantitative and predictive understanding of animal decision-making in the natural world. The institute’s three departments and one independent research group are home to over 150 employees focused on experimental, observational and theoretical research in the fields of animal movement and migration, behavioral ecology, and collective behavior, and have close academic ties to the University of Konstanz and its Center for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior.

The Department for the Ecology of Animal Societies would like to fill the following position from April 2020 (some flexibility on start date is possible) Post doc (m/f/d) in the collective ecology of Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) (100%)

The position is offered for an initial period of 2 years; an extension of up to 2 additional years is possible, contingent on performance.

Your tasks:
The selected candidate will engage with an interdisciplinary and international team of researchers undertaking a large-scale project on the Collective Ecology of Verreaux’s Sifaka. In this project, we are leveraging innovations in tracking technology and computational modeling to determine how the structure of social connections shapes information flow and decision-making at the individual, group and population level. The post doc will lead field-based observational and tracking research on populations of Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) and fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) in Kirindy Mitea National Park in Madagascar. S/he will develop and apply analytical methods to investigate mechanisms of behavioral coordination and patterns of information flow at the individual, group and population level, and may also develop simulation models linking behavioral interactions to collective outcomes across groups with different social structures. The post doc will be expected to supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and to participate in all aspects of the research project from field work and data collection to managing and analyzing data to writing manuscripts and grant proposals, and will be asked to contribute to the development of research approaches and directions. S/he will be based at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior / University of Konstanz (Dr. Meg Crofoot) in collaboration with University of Texas, Austin (Dr. Rebecca Lewis), Southeastern Louisiana University (Dr. Teague O’Mara), and University of California, Davis (Dr. Damien Caillaud).

Required qualifications:
·         PhD in a relevant area

·         Enthusiasm for tackling biological questions with data-driven approaches

International Science Coordinator at the Department Ecology of Animal Societies (f/m/d)
(50-100 %, E 13 TV-L, Reference Number 2020/024) The position is available first for two years and can be prolonged after this initial phase. The start date is as soon as possible. In principle, this position can be divided into two positions.

The University of Konstanz is one of Germany's Universities of Excellence: It was successful in all three funding lines of the German Excellence Initiative and has also been competing successfully in both funding lines of its successor programme, the Excellence Strategy, since 2018.
The newly founded Department for the Ecology of Animal Societies led by Prof. Meg Crofoot is a joint institution of the University of Konstanz with the nearby Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and has close ties to the University’s Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour.
The department embraces an explicitly collaborative approach to scientific exploration. Its multi-disciplinary team works together to develop new ways of measuring, analyzing and interpreting the behaviour of socially complex animal species in ecologically and evolutionarily relevant field settings. To understand the causes and consequences of social variation, the department takes comparative approach, analyzing social interactions—from dyad to group to population—within and between species. We are searching for an International Science Coordinator who will work with members of the department to facilitate our field-based research. The successful candidate will be the central contact person for all international field research activities and animal experiments and will support department scientists in research planning, permissions, logistics and reporting. In addition to the coordination and organization of the departmental activities at the different international field sites, s/he will be responsible for implementing safety protocols and ensuring compliance with local, state, and/or institutional regulatory requirements. We seek a candidate who is committed to developing a strong understanding of our scientific research program, has strong organizational skills, and has a demonstrated capacity for effective cross-cultural communication. Prior experience with international, field-based research in ecology, animal behavior or related fields is desirable, as are Spanish, French and/or Swahili language skills.

The selected candidate will join a newly established research project Navigating Dispersal: Social and Environmental Decision-Making of Immigrating Baboons. In this project, we are leveraging innovations in tracking technology, remote sensing and computational modeling to determine how male baboons navigate the complex social and ecological landscapes they must traverse when emigrating from their natal group. The post doc will lead field-based behavioral and demographic data collection and remote-tracking research on a population of olive baboons (Papio anubis) at the Mpala Research Center in Laikipia, Kenya.  In addition, s/he will develop and apply analytical methods to investigate how dispersing individuals acquire information about the social and ecological landscape and make decisions about where to go across a range of spatial and temporal scales. The post doc will be expected to supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and to participate in all aspects of the research project from field work, including habituation and data collection, to managing and analyzing data to writing manuscripts and grant proposals, and will be asked to contribute to the development of research approaches and directions. S/he will be based at the Mpala Research Center in Kenya and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior / University of Konstanz in Germany.

Stage en éthologie humaine : Impact de la pratique musicale sur les comportements prosociaux chez les enfants d’âge scolaire.

La proposition de stage s’inscrit dans le contexte d’un projet longitudinal sur 3 ans nommé EVE (« Exister avec la Voix Ensemble »). Il s’agit d’un projet collaboratif entre le Laboratoire Éthologie Cognition Développement (LECD) de l’Université Paris Nanterre et la Philarmonie de Paris, qui vise à  évaluer  les  effets  d'une  pratique  régulière  du  chant  choral  dans  deux  écoles  REP+  sur  les comportements prosociaux, les performances académiques et le bien-être des enfants âgés entre 8 et 11 ans. Ce stage s’inscrit dans la seconde année du projet, pour lequel l’étudiant sera amené à intervenir directement au sein des écoles pour récolter des données par le biais d’enregistrements vidéo,  puis  à  effectuer  l’analyse  de  celles-ci.  Les  comportements  prosociaux  seront  évalués  à travers  l’observation  éthologique  des  interactions  sociales  des  enfants  en  binôme  dans  des situations de coopération, de partage et d’entraide. Le ou la stagiaire devra travailler en étroite collaboration  avec  Carla  Aimé-Jubin,  post-doctorante  au  LaboratoireÉthologie  Cognition Développement (LECD) de l’université Paris Nanterre, en charge du contact avec les écoles et de l’organisation des passations, ainsi qu’avec Romain di Stasi, stagiaire en master 2 Éthologie.
Il s’agit d’un stage de deux mois. Nous recherchons idéalement un(e) candidat(e) disponible pour la période de Février-Mars ou Mars-Avril 2020, mais ne sommes pas fermés à l’éventualité que l’étudiant(e) commence plus tard.

A Post-doctoral research position is available for two years (extension negotiable) in the Comparative BioCognition (CBC) Research Group at the University of Osnabrück, Germany. The project will investigate the development of turn-taking in human children (0-6 years) with a special focus on production and comprehension.  The project is funded by the European Research Council and involves both primary research to be conducted in the child lab at the CBC,  as well as the opportunity to work along side the PI in larger-scale project management (with planned comparisons in other primate species).  Primary research will involve conducting and coordinating research involving naturalistic observations and behavioural experiments (eye tracking, pupillometry) and the use of statistical modelling (LMM and GLMM).
