Research Assistant, Khao Yai Gibbon Project

Hiring Organization: Deutsches Primatenzentrum (DPZ), Leibniz-Institute for Primate Research

Position Description:
We are searching for a research assistant at Khao Yai National Park (Thailand) to work on a new study on sexual signals and adaptive function of gibbon vocalizations in wild white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar).
Responsibilities include data collection on a daily basis (e.g. acoustic recording, faecal sample collection and behavioural observation), data entry and possible assistance in the management of the field site.

Qualifications/Experience:
No specific qualifications are required though previous field experience with primates or other animals will be viewed as a great asset as well as having a BSc in biology, zoology, anthropology or a related discipline will be very helpful. Furthermore, computer skills are welcome and a strong interest in primates is essential.

• Applicants need to be fit, healthy and mentally strong with very good social skills
• Applicants must be able to work independently (on their own in the forest after training) within the team
• Hard working (long days initially 4.30am to 5pm)
• Feel comfortable living under basic conditions and being far away from family/ friends
• Have positive attitude and high motivation towards hard and tiring work

Salary/funding:
No salary provided, however depending on funding, a small monthly stipend will be offered (approximately 100/150 Euro).

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Accommodation at the field site is covered by the project, as well as visa and research permit. Applicant must cover all own travel and living expenses.

Term of Appointment:
8 months, up to 1 year (starting in September 2008)
