Field assistant for long term study of capuchin social relationships

Hiring Organization:
UCLA

Position Description:
I am seeking volunteers to work on a long-term project studying various aspects of social development, social learning and behavioral ecology in wild white-faced capuchins. This is part of a long-term project in which we know the genetic relationships and histories of individuals from several social groups for multiple generations. See my website for a detailed description of the job requirements, working conditions and application procedures. Duties include dawn-to-dusk behavioral observations, a small amount of lab work, and data entry. See the book "Manipulative Monkeys: The Capuchins of Lomas Barbudal" for a detailed account of daily life on the project and a description of the various on-going research projects.

Qualifications/Experience:
Previous fieldwork experience and Spanish language skills are desirable but not absolutely required, particularly if applicants have other useful skills to bring to the project (such as computer expertise). Please read the application procedures on the website carefully.

Salary/funding:
Depends on current grant status. Sometimes I can provide a small stipend in addition to room and board.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Depends on current funding status of the project. I always cover lodging, and typically pay for all meals. Airfare is sometimes reimbursed upon completion of the work.

Term of Appointment:
variable start dates; we prefer people who can stay an entire year.

Application Deadline:
applications accepted at any time; apply at least 3 months before your desired start date

Comments:
The next available opening for a volunteer will probably be in winter 2009, though it is possible that a position will open up earlier.
