Volunteer field assistant - semi-free-ranging Barbary macaques

Position Description:
I am looking for a field assistant to assist in a PhD project investigating nepotism in a group of semi-free-ranging Barbary macaques at Affenberg Salem, Germany. The assistant will collect behavioral data with me for a period of 4 to 5 months starting in January 2012. At that time of the year temperature can go below 0°C so the work is both physically and mentally demanding.

Qualifications/Experience:
The qualifications I am looking for in a field assistant are:
- highly motivated and interested in primate behavior
- no fear of approaching the monkeys
- hardworking, commited to scientific research, disciplined in following field procedures and highly reliable
- be physically fit and capable of undertaking fieldwork in challenging conditions
- be able to speak english or french (although knowledge of German is not required, it will, needless to say, be very helpful)
- be comfortable with living away from friends and family for a few months

Candidates with previous field experience will be preferred.

Salary/funding:
No funding or salary is available.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
The successful candidate will have to cover his or her own living expenses and health insurance and should bring personal items required to work outside during winter. Lodging will be provided: I rent an apartment with two bedrooms at the park entrance. A contribution for traveling fees will be available.

Term of Appointment:
4 - 5 months starting in January 2012.
