Position Description:
The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is wrapping up the first phase of a “Sustainable Livelihoods Project" in Uganda, which aims to improve the health, well-being and livelihoods of local people, while simultaneously conserving and restoring habitat for wild chimpanzee populations. This project benefits 3,500 people in 700 households, and aims to maintain forest resources between two forest reserves, for both humans and chimpanzees. 

JGI is looking for students to conduct research in the field this summer 2013, to monitor and assess the immediate and long-term impacts of the project on local communities and the environment. This project takes a holistic approach to conservation and development, and is the first attempt at restoring a forest corridor in the Albertine Rift. Therefore, research will be essential in gathering science-based evidence to inform actions moving forward.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Current Masters students (or skilled undergrads, min 3rd year)
- Must have supervisor willing to guide research project development and analysis
- Relevant faculties/areas of research include: anthropology, forestry, geography, African studies, wildlife conservation, international development, etc.
- Potential research topics include: 
o Tree species survivorship
o Impact of cash crops
o River restoration/water quality
o Value and sustainability of local enterprises

Salary/funding:
- This is an unpaid position, although support can be provided for grant seeking and writing
- Budget for 3 months in field (including flight) is approx $4000-5000

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
- No financial support is available
- Preparation will occur with direct support of JGI Canadian staff
- While in the field, support will be provided by JGI Uganda staff
- Basic accommodations are available at the field site (rural western Uganda) and at headquarters in Entebbe

Term of Appointment:
- 3 months field work from May to July 2013; requires commitment of 12 months (Jan 2013 – Dec 2014) for preparation and report submission
