Short-term field assistant for tourist-monkey interaction study

Hiring Organization:
City of Bristol College

Date Posted:
2013-07-02

Position Description:
I am conducting a short pilot study this summer on the human-monkey interactions involving white-faced capuchins (Cebus imitator) at Cahuita National Park, Costa Rica. The study’s immediate goals are to (1) assess the types and frequency of interactions at this site; and (2) to determine roughly which troops/individuals are engaged in such interactions. The ultimate goals are to develop a sustainable management plan for the monkeys at Cahuita, and to begin a long-term collaborative research project with this capuchin population.

My time in the field is limited, and I’m hoping to find a reliable assistant to continue data collection for a few weeks on their own. The assistant would be needed from around 5 August, to work alongside me and my partner until we leave Cahuita at the end of the week. This will gives us an opportunity for training and inter-observer reliability tests, and to iron out any problems before we leave the field. From there, 2-3 weeks of continued data collection are required. I can be somewhat flexible on the exact duration/dates for this independent work.

The post would be most appropriate for someone who is already in Costa Rica for the summer and who would like some further experience with capuchins.

Qualifications/Experience:
Preference will be given to someone who is currently taking or has completed a primate field training course, or who has already had some experience with field data collection.

To apply, please send a copy of your CV, a brief description of your academic/careers goals, and a list of 3 potential references with their e-mail addresses. All applications received by 10 July will be considered.

Salary/funding:
Unfortunately, my budget for this project is very tight, and this is basically a volunteer position. A small stipend of 80,000 colones (about $160) per week is available to help offset living expenses.

Term of Appointment:
approximately 5 - 31 August

Application Deadline:
10 July
