The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal model of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service. 

The CNPRC is seeking an experienced and talented Animal Care Colony Manager to manage the nonhuman primate (NHP) Colony. The incumbent ensures the humane, responsible and scientifically or instructionally sound use of animals by supporting the enforcement of compliance with applicable UC polices/procedures, state and federal regulations, and AAALAC accreditation. The ACC Manager is responsible for managing the Animal Care Service support teams, training and development, and colony facilities by maximizing both human and financial resources, increasing operational productivity and ensuring colony operations schedules are accomplished supporting colony goals and objectives. Perform supervisory functions to effectively and efficiently manage teams of Animal Care Supervisors and their staff to assure proper training of animal care and Center personnel according to AAALAC accreditation and regulatory compliance. Work closely with the Assistant Director and in coordination with other Primate Services Managers to assure colony care and the management support of team-based colony operations and resolve personnel and operations issues affecting colony performance. Facilitate throughput, minimize constraints, and control costs of the Animal Care Program by:

·        At all times considering the welfare of the animals.

·        Maximize human resource efforts through proper training and instituting benchmarks for completion of colony care functions.

·        Following the directives of Primate Services Management while continue to achieve the highest quality Animal Care, and providing technical research support to PIs.

·        Bring forward new practices and procedures that may improve efficiency and care of the animals. Provides strategic, expert advice and consultation on the design and implementation of effective animal care processes, housing, and oversight.

Participate in the development, organization, and implementation of short- and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness and staff accountability in consultation with the Assistant Director, Primate Services and other senior leadership members; effects changes required for improvement. Communicate with Animal Care Supervisors regarding current care, infectious disease control practices and project-related initiatives to advance initiatives related to nonhuman primate care: monitor breeding practices, morbidity and mortality, develop and provide statistical metrics for colony animal productions to sustain colony size while simultaneously providing animals to meet Center-wide research programs. Ensure regulatory compliance and responsible for preparing the animal facilities for inspections and making any necessary corrections. Manage and coordinate the animal care facilities operations consistent with UCD Animal Care Program. Inspect animal facilities to ensure humane care and use of animals in research; ensure that all animal facilities are maintained in compliance with accreditation standards. Take part in and oversee the capture of animals that may escape from primary enclosures and employees engaging in animal research with regards to local, state and federal guidelines and regulations pertaining to proper care and use of animals.  

Work with PIs/scientists to facilitate cutting-edge primate science being performed by assuring and providing support coordination of research needs as it relates to colony management practices. Develop metrics to assess/report on unit performance and goals achieved. Manage accountability of staff to assure meeting regulatory standards and SOPs. Responsible for departmental budget, monitor expenditures, developing budget proposals and provide recommendations to management regarding breeding practices, colony policies and SOPs. Responsible for hiring, evaluation, training and promotions for direct and indirect reports. Ensure regulatory compliance and responsible for preparing the animal facilities for inspections and making any necessary corrections. Manage and coordinate the animal care facilities operations consistent with Campus Animal Care Program. Inspect animal facilities to ensure humane care and use of animals in research; ensure that all animal facilities are maintained in compliance with accreditation standards. Take part in and oversee the capture of animals that may escape from primary enclosures and employees engaging in animal research with regards to local, state and federal guidelines and regulations pertaining to proper care and use of animals.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor's degree in a Biological or Animal Science such as, Animal Population Science, Animal Behavioral Science, or a related in a biological field or in biomedical research.

-AALAS certification (LATg) is required, a candidate without LATg certification, is expected to obtain LATg certification within 1-2 years of employment.

-5 to 7+ years of experience in animal care and facilities operations management and supervision of large work teams, with at least 3 years of experience at a University facility. Experience with the care of a variety of nonhuman primates is required. Experience in laboratory animal facilities management is required.

-Applied management practice and experience in operating a large animal facility under stringent regulations and national standards relating to the care and use of animals in research and education, and issues pertaining to the care and use of animals in research and education, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) responsibilities and procedures, and the role and value of animal use in biological and biomedical research. Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of conducting scientific research using animals.

-Experience in animal husbandry operations management practices, includes supervision of Animal Care Supervisors, technical crews, workflow and resource management experience, and any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Knowledge of the federal, state, and local laws and regulations and environmental conditions necessary for the care and use of laboratory animals. Knowledge of animal husbandry standards, animal handling, and diseases of animals.

-Expert knowledge of the federal, state, and local laws and regulations and environmental conditions necessary for the care and use of laboratory animals. Colony Operations knowledge of animal husbandry standards, animal handling and potential diseases of animals.

-Expert knowledge of federal animal care regulations and American Association for Accrediting Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and National Institute of Health (NIH) guidelines; applied knowledge of anatomical and physiological differences of small to midsize lab animals; diseases and illnesses common to lab animals; procedures for diagnostic tests of fecal, blood, and urine samples.

-Experience in applied animal handling and technical procedures such as administering medications/injections and handling and restraining animals; interpreting and applying rules and regulations; analyzing work flow and establishing work schedules and procedures; maintaining laboratory records, SOPs, and developing reports.

-Knowledge of Quarantine and Infectious Control Regulations for CDC and the State of California pertaining to nonhuman primates. Knowledge of health and safety requirements in a large animal research setting.   

Preferred Qualifications:

-Graduate degree in a biological or animal science such as Primate Biology and Behavior, Animal Population Science, Animal Behavior, Epidemiology, or a related field.

-Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or equivalent work experience with laboratory animals including nonhuman primates and performing related technical manipulations.

-Experience in (primate) research with the demonstrated ability to interact with research investigators and have the ability to operationally apply scientific and evidenced-based approaches to animal care and colony management in addition to animal care regulatory practices that are consistent with AAALAC industry standards.

-Professional level experience in training and directing supervisors and employees in following strict instructions precisely and perform work according to prescribed SOPs/IACUC protocols.

-Applied experience in project and operations management principles, practices, techniques, and tools used in large Colony setting. Skills in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Group facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to develop, plans, and implement short- and long-range goals.

-Strong teamwork management and coordination for multiple teams supporting colony operations. Effective interpersonal and observational skills to assure execution of colony operations, safety and regulatory compliance, and clear staff expectations.
