1 postdoctoral fellow, 1 PhD student, 2 Master’s students.

Positions are available to carry out research within the multi-disciplinary project “Understanding social structure through a complex systems approach: emergence of dynamic, flexible properties in multiplex social networks” funded by the Mexican agency CONACYT as part of the call Ciencia de Frontera (Frontiers in Science) and coordinated by researchers from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Universidad Veracruzana.
The project aims at uncovering general principles by which social structure emerges in different systems. Based on complex systems theory, we plan to investigate how lower level interactions and relationships between systems' components lead to global properties at the structural level. We use different social systems, in which each interaction type will be analyzed as a layer in a multiplex, dynamic network that will have different properties, including flexibility and a capacity to adapt to different environmental conditions. The use of different social systems and their integration into a single, coherent framework requires a multidisciplinary team, including biologists, physicists, mathematicians, anthropologists and engineers. The main result of the project will be a better understanding of social structure and its underlying mechanisms.

At this stage we seek:

1 postdoctoral fellow to start in autumn 2021 and work under the supervision of Dr. Denis Boyer (Instituto de Física, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). The successful candidate will have a background in physics, mathematics or computer sciences, and a PhD in a relevant field. Experience in modeling or in the study of complex networks is welcome and at least some knowledge of Spanish desirable.  Interested applicants should contact Dr. Denis Boyer by email (boyer@fisica.unam.mx).

1 Master’s student to work under the supervision of Dr. Denis Boyer (Instituto de Física, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). The successful candidate will have an excellent undergraduate degree in physics, mathematics, computer sciences or a related field, possibly some experience in modeling and coding, and at least some knowledge of Spanish. The application deadline to the Master’s program in Physics is 12 February 2021, to start in August 2021 (see www.posgrado.fisica.unam.mx for more information). Other Master’s programs at UNAM can also be considered (see www.posgrado.unam.mx).  Interested applicants should contact Dr. Denis Boyer by email (boyer@fisica.unam.mx) as soon as possible. Specific qualifications and a CV will be asked after potential applicants send such an email expressing their interest.

1 PhD or Master’s student under the supervision of Dr. Gabriel Ramos Fernández (Instituto de Investigaciones en Matemáticas Aplicadas y en Sistemas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).
The successful candidate will have an excellent undergraduate degree in biology, mathematics, physics, computer science or related fields, have some training in data analysis and social network theory and at least some knowledge of Spanish. The application deadline for the graduate programs in mathematical, biological or sustainability sciences is February 12th 2021, to begin in August 2021 (www.posgrado.unam.mx/admision/agosto2021/). Interested applicants should send an expression of interest and a CV to Dr. Gabriel Ramos Fernández by email (gabriel.ramos@iimas.unam.mx) as soon as possible.
