Objectifs 

Les subventions de recherche s’adressent aux chercheurs français ou étrangers après post-doc, âgés au maximum, de 35 ans pour les sciences biologiques et de 40 ans pour les sciences humaines, à la date de clôture de réception des dossiers. 

Conditions d’éligibilité 

De préférence déjà titulaires d’un poste, ils s’établiront de façon indépendante en constituant autour d’eux une équipe de recherche afin de mener à bien un projet scientifique collectif au sein d’une structure d’accueil en France dont l’activité entre dans les objectifs de la Fondation.Les chercheurs pourront également développer leur projet dans un laboratoire différent de celui où ils ont obtenu leur thèse ou de celui où ils travaillent actuellement. 

Montant de la subvention 

La subvention attribuée pour une durée de un an non renouvelable, pourra être de l’ordre de 15.000 à 35.000 euros. 

Elle est destinée à l’achat de matériel, aux budgets consacrés à des missions, à la participation de colloques, aux frais de publications et aux frais relatifs à l’intervention de prestataires spécialisés.

Project description: There is growing interest in the question of why animals should show consistent differences in behaviour across individuals, either within traits (animal personality) or across traits (behavioural syndromes). This has now been demonstrated across diverse taxa and appears to be a fundamental aspect of variation in behaviour. Its ecological and evolutionary importance is rapidly becoming evident and a growing number of studies have linked behavioural consistency to life-history. The proposed project will aim to address a major gap in our understanding of behavioural consistency, by asking how ontogenetic plasticity at different stages of life (embryo to adult) impacts on contextual plasticity (responses to the immediate environment) and behavioural consistency. We are looking for a talented and motivated scientist to take on this challenge. 

The project proposes to focus the role of predation threat at different stages throughout development and adulthood. The central hypothesis is that consistent differences in behaviour among adults will be influenced by the interaction between their genes and early-life experiences. By measuring metabolic demand through different life stages and under different treatment regimens the project will determine whether ‘pace of life syndrome’ (currently a popular but largely untested hypothesis) is a major determinate of behavioural consistency. Measuring growth, survival and reproductive success will also enable the student to assess life-history costs and benefits of consistency and plasticity. The pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, provides an ideal model system to unravel the mechanisms linking memory, ontogeny and behavioural consistency. Laboratory populations can be readily established, allowing the establishment of different inbred strains for determining the influence of genotype. It is the first species in which consistency in memory formation has been demonstrated across traits and life stages in wild populations, and memory formation linked to predation threat has been shown across all life stages from embryos and juveniles to adults. The project will also allow for scope to test the outcome of early life experience in other molluscs, including economically important species. 

This PhD studentship provides an opportunity to gain world-class expertise in animal behaviour, developmental biology and physiology. Dalesman (lead supervisor) has established expertise in measuring plasticity (memory) across all life stages, and is developing techniques in measuring metabolic demand during embryonic development. Briffa (co-supervisor) has extensive experience measuring animal personality and linking this with metabolic demand in adult invertebrates. IBERS has excellent temperature controlled aquarium facilities available for carrying out experimental work and animal maintenance, and specialised equipment for measuring metabolic demand and recording embryonic development and behaviour. You will also have the opportunity to spend time training at the University of Plymouth with Briffa. Through the training provided you will develop a wide range of skills applicable to behavioural research. You will be expected to present your findings at major international conferences and receive training in making your research accessible through public engagement.

The Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position to begin Fall semester 2016 (August 29, 2016). Applications are invited from behavioral or cognitive neuroscientists using cutting edge methods to link brain and behavior in animal models or in humans. Example research topics include learning, motivation, emotion, higher cognition, or perception. Undergraduate and graduate-level teaching in these areas will be encouraged. We expect the primary appointment to be in our Cognitive and Brain Sciences area with cross affiliation with other departmental areas. The appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late May), and will be made at rank of tenure-track assistant professor. Salary is competitive.

A Ph.D. in Psychology or a related field is required. Candidates will be evaluated according to the overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work, evidence of research ability, ability to make an interdisciplinary contribution to the University’s research mission, commitment to high-quality classroom instruction and student mentoring, and the strength of recommendations. Impact d’un amorçage olfactif sur les choix alimentaires chez l’enfant normo-pondéral et en surpoids de 6 à 11 ans.


Résumé

Contexte : La proportion d'enfants en surpoids ou obèses est élevée dans la plupart des pays développés, dont la France (Bellisle Rolland-Cachera, 2007). Environ 18% des enfants français âgés de 6 à 11 ans sont en surpoids, dont 3,3% sont obèses (Pitrou, et al, 2010). Le lien entre le risque de surpoids/obésité et la capacité d’autorégulation des apports alimentaires en fonction des besoins énergétiques n’est plus à démontrer, chez l’adulte comme chez l’enfant (Fisher Birch, 2002). La capacité d’autorégulation des prises alimentaires est pourtant opérante de manière innée chez le très jeune enfant (Birch Deysher, 1986). Cependant, cette capacité d’autorégulation tend à se dégrader avec l’âge et à engendrer ainsi un risque de surpoids. Il apparaît dès lors crucial de mieux comprendre et d’identifier les déterminants précoces de la dérégulation de la prise alimentaire chez l’enfant. Des facteurs internes, d’ordre psycho-cognitif, pourraient contribuer à expliquer cette détérioration, ainsi qu’une sensibilité particulière aux signaux sensoriels présents dans l’environnement.

Objectif : L’objectif de ce travail sera de développer une méthodologie novatrice permettant d’appréhender les différences de réactivité des enfants à des signaux sensoriels, notamment les odeurs, selon leur statut pondéral (normo-pondéraux, surpoids/obèses) et de mieux comprendre les représentations impactant les comportements de choix subséquents.

Etude : Cette étude s’inscrira dans le cadre de la thèse de Lucile Marty. Nous envisageons de recruter 60 enfants au total âgés de 6-11 ans (30 enfants normo-pondéraux et 30 enfants en surpoids ou obèses). Dans la mesure du possible, les enfants normo-pondéraux seront appariés aux enfants en surpoids ou obèses en fonction de leur niveau scolaire, de leur sexe et de la catégorie socioprofessionnelle de leur parents. Différentes situations d’amorçage olfactif seront réalisées. L’amorçage repose sur le fait que la perception d’un stimulus (l’amorce), qu’elle soit consciente ou non, peut entrainer une modification du traitement d’un autre stimulus (la cible), et aboutir à une modification du comportement. Nos travaux préalablement réalisés chez l’adulte (Gaillet et, 2013 ; 2014 ; Chambaron et al., 2015) ont montré qu’une odeur était susceptible d’activer, de manière non consciente, des représentations ayant un impact sur les choix alimentaires. Dans nos études, nous avons montré que des adultes ayant été exposés de manière non attentive à une odeur alimentaire choisissaient ensuite plus de mets en lien avec cette odeur (odeur de poire à compote de pomme, odeur de pain au chocolat à gaufre). Ce type de paradigme d’amorçage implicite n’a, à notre connaissance, pas été utilisé chez des enfants. Nous souhaiterions développer un protocole adapté à l’enfant permettant une exposition incidente à des odeurs d’aliments palatables (odeurs d’aliments gras salés et/ou gras sucrés) versus « sains » (fruits et/ou légumes).
