Summary: Domestication appears to have shaped the development of cognitive abilities in domesticated animals, particularly livestock, by favoring those related to human-directed cognition. This hypothesis has been tested primarily through studies on species such as pigs and horses. However, there is a notable lack of research on farmed birds, such as domestic chickens, whose population surpassed 30 billion in 2023. This project aims to fill this gap by studying the socio-cognitive abilities of laying hens in relation to humans. By combining behavioral approaches with innovative cognitive study tools, such as touchscreen devices, the project will address a wide range of cognitive abilities of increasing complexity. The skills studied will range from basic abilities, such as discriminating human faces, to more complex competencies, such as forming concepts based on interpreting emotions expressed by human faces. We will also investigate whether chickens can process and adapt their behavior in response to human signals such as gazes or gestures. The expected results could not only expand our understanding of the evolution of cognitive abilities in domestication contexts but also have implications for improving human-animal relationships in modern farming systems. Indeed, such knowledge has contributed to similar improvements in species where it has been studied.

Merci d’adresser votre candidature à : landivisiau@chenevert.vet
