Dans le cadre des activités du service Etudes du Patrimoine Naturel, le postulant sera amené à collaborer à la mise en place et la gestion d'un observatoire national de l'avifaune en s'appuyant et en développant les réseaux existants. Il devra également exploiter et analyser les données collectées dans le cadre des missions nationales de la LPO concernant les oiseaux nicheurs et hivernants. Il contribuera à la gestion des bases de données nationales de la LPO, ainsi qu'à la rédaction des rapports de synthèse et d'étude. Il sera encadré et accompagné dans son travail par les membres du service et bénéficiera de leur expérience pour gagner rapidement en autonomie.

Missions :

·         Coordination d'un observatoire national de l'avifaune

·         Animation de réseaux nationaux (oiseaux d'eau hivernants, ZPS, espèces rares et menacées etc.)

·         Analyse des données Oiseaux d'eau hivernants et rédaction du rapport annuel

·         Exploitation et analyse des bases de données de la LPO

·         Contribution analytique et rédactionnelle au rapportage relatif à la Directive Oiseaux

Profil et compétences :

Indispensables :

·         Formation Bac +5, spécialité en écologie, biologie, statistique

·         Très bonnes connaissances générales en ornithologie (espèces nicheuses et hivernantes)

·         Maitrise des outils de gestion de base de données (Access notamment)

·         Maitrise des procédés d'analyses de données statistiques et spatiales

·         Maitrise d'un outil cartographique (MapInfo, ArcGIS, QGIS...)

·         Très bonnes capacités rédactionnelles, notamment scientifiques

Souhaités :

·         Bonne connaissance des réseaux associatifs et institutionnels

·         Bonne connaissance réglementaire (Directive oiseaux, loi de Protection de la Nature...)

·         Autonomie, faire preuve d'initiatives et travail en équipe

·         Bon niveau d'anglais : lu, écrit, parlé.

Vacancy for Two Post-Docs

I would be interested to have one or two postdoctoral fellow that want to work integrated with our group. As many of you probably know, the Uruguayan Agency of Reseach and Innovation has started a postdoctoral program. It is exclusive for persons (no matter nationality) who have recently obtained their their PhD and who have lived for three last years out of our country.

I am attaching the official call (also see http://www.anii.org.uy/web/convocatorias/becas-de-posdoctorado-fondo-profesor-dr-roberto-caldeyro-barcia). It is paid the round ticket and a fellowship equivalent to U$S 2000 per month (a very good salary in our country). If you know somebody interested please forward him/her this email. Deadline for this program is July 23rd, however I would like to met the applicant at least one month before, so we can agree about the outline of the project. The start of the fellowship is negotiable but will not be before next march (according to my last extra official information on evaluation timing) and not latter our southern spring in 2013.

The general subject of the work should be "Neural integration between central expectations and sensory signals". We have, at present, two main ongoing research lines on this topic, one in the ELL of electric fish (focused on pulse Gymnotids) and the other in humans.

In electric fish we are able to do classical anatomy, electrophysiology (either in brain slices or in vivo), behaviour and modelling. The applicant would be ideally somebody with experience either in slice work or in vivo electrophysiology and work in close collaboration with two advanced PhD students.

In humans we combine psycho physics and EEG to analyse this problem. For this research line I would like that the candidate has some experience on signal analysis and computer programming (for example, an engineer or mathematician) and to be potentially interested in cooperating with a partner group for exploring the possibility to build a brain-machine interface.

In addition to these research lines we have a long term tradition in comparative study of electric organs either in adults or during development (this last aspect in cooperation with María Castelló). Ideally somebody with background in "evo-devo" would be the best candidatein this case. Nevertheless, we do not have at present the necessary funds for a project involving field work in other countries beside Uruguay. Although this could be another option, it requires that the applicant could apply (and get) funds for such kind of project either in his/her own country or internationally (I would be able to help writ ting such grant application although most sources of funds for this kind of projects are virtually void for Latino American citizens excluding Brazilians).

We had had (and plan to continue if possible) very fruitful cooperation with groups from the US and Europe as for example those leaded by Curtis Bell, Kirsty Grant, Fred Boyer, Pascal Fua, Auke Ijspeert, Gerhard vonder Emde, Serge Kernbach, Will Crampton, James Albert. Many other people on the field of electric fish know well our work to give an independent referece on our lab. Some of these projects has been financed in the past by agencies as NIH, NSF and the 7th framework program of the EU.

Position Description:

Due to an unexpected turn-over of personnel we have and URGENT need for a new project assistant willing to start in AUGUST or SEPTEMBER.

Contract Duration: Six Months (Negotiable)

The Project Assistant will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator/Director and assist in all aspects of the project's work.

The procedure is to come as a paying volunteer for the first 3 weeks. This initial period gives you a chance to see how you feel about the project and your responsibilities, and equally important, it allows you and the Project Director/Coordinator to assess your working relationship. If you and they decide that you should stay on, then there will be no extra charge for the rest of your six-month stay.

Possible Responsibilities:

Organising and supervising short-term volunteers

Email correspondence for project

Coordinating with referral organisations

Data entry

Specimen collection, preparation, and weighing; other related research tasks as needed

Assistance with grant writing as needed

Assisting Project Coordinator or Director with any requested tasks

Possible forest trekking and observation of wild orangutans in the jungle with staff and volunteers, including overnight camping for several days.

Important Note: the opportunity for trekking and orangutan observation is not guaranteed; it is totally dependent on the needs of the project at the time (i.e. the number of staff required, weather, the physical fitness of the assistant, etc.). Also note: there is no physical contact with orangutans.

Qualifications/Experience:

University graduate or student.

Good problem-solving skills and ability to take the initiative

Ability to live under basic conditions with limited amenities

Salary/funding:

Participation fee payable by volunteer = US $950

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):

You will be asked to make a contribution to the project to cover costs incurred by you at the project as well as a donation to the project's research. (USD$ 950) While employed you will receive accommodation, three meals a day, drinking water and all transport costs associated with the work.

Anticipated Position- Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University

Position Overview:

Dr. Maja Makagon will be seeking a motivated individual to provide technical, scientific and organization assistance on research projects relating to poultry behavior and welfare. The successful candidate will assist Dr. Maja Makagon in setting up her new laboratory in the Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University. It is anticipated that employment will begin between August-September of this year and will be renewable on a year to year basis. Key duties include:

·   Coordination and management of research projects related to poultry behavior and physiology (including project development, project set up, data collection and analysis),

·   Supervision and instruction of undergraduate students affiliated with the research laboratory,

·   Assistance with activities associated with setting up a new research laboratory (ex. equipment ordering, protocol development),

·   Assistance in preparation of reports, manuscripts and presentations.

Qualifications:

Applicants with previous experience conducting behavioral research or a Master’s degree in animal behavior or related area are preferred. However, interested individuals with the following minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply:

·   B.A. degree in biological sciences

·   Previous experience with behavioral research

·   Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft suite, Endnote
