The Bioacoustics Research Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is seeking a Project Leader for the newly established Terrestrial Acoustics Monitoring Initiative (TAMI). For the past decade, the Lab has been at the forefront of researching, developing, and applying innovative acoustic technologies for monitoring birds and other wildlife. This position will be housed within the Bioacoustics Research Program and will provide primary leadership TAMI. TAMI will focus on the automated detection of nocturnal flight calls of birds in order to understand avian occurrence, distribution, migration patterns, and impact from anthropogenic activities. The project leader will be responsible for guiding development of this automated system for recording, analyzing, and visualizing large amounts of avian acoustic data, and deploying the system to study avian migration ecology, especially nocturnal migration, at scales ranging from local to hemispheric.
Additionally, the project leader will:
- Oversee the day-to-day TAMI operations pursuant to the project goals.
- Develop risk assessment and forecast models to assist the energy industry in siting and operating rapidly expanding facilities while minimizing impacts to migratory birds and bats.
- Bring the phenomena of bird migration to the general public through citizen-science applications and dissemination of real-time migration maps.
- Manage the integration of the hardware, software, and algorithms into a user-friendly system that meets the specified requirements.
- Facilitate the development of project schedules, milestones, and deliverables.
- Monitor schedules, budgets and required resources.
- Provide timely and accurate reports to all project stakeholders.
- Work extensively with avian biologists in the Conservation Science program as well as engineers, software programmers, algorithm developers, and staff in the Bioacoustics Research Program.
- The successful candidate will work closely with external partners in academia, government, and industry.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in either engineering with natural sciences (ecology, wildlife biology, etc.) experience, or natural sciences with engineering experience, plus 3-5 years direct experience including project management experience.
- Must have a background in the natural sciences and have practical experience with software and hardware technologies related to acoustic monitoring and signal processing; OR have a background in computer science/engineering and a strong understanding of the natural sciences, especially related to wildlife monitoring.
- Must have experience in systems engineering and integration of hardware/software components.
- A proven track record of managing complex teams and project components is essential.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills are required--must be able to communicate complex, technical ideas to a range of audiences both technical and non-technical.
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple project schedules with limited resources and bring the system together as a whole to meet project requirements.
- Knowledge requirements for this position include understanding software and hardware technologies needed to process large datasets of acoustic signals, field applications of acoustic monitoring, and wildlife population sampling principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree
- Engineering experience with electronics design, embedded programming, or equivalent
- Experience in the scientific process, including the planning and execution of field research
- Knowledge of animal communication, acoustics, biology, or ecology
