Primate Behaviour and Ecology Field Course in Sabah, Borneo

Program Description:
A two-week field school in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in Sabah, Borneo is being offered by Danau Girang Field Centre from 4-18 August, 2012. The course will not run with less than eight students, with a maximum 15 spots available.

Tuition will be given in the following areas: satellite tracking and radio-telemetry of diurnal and nocturnal primates, habitat and phenology sampling, methods in behavioural observation, primate census methods, GPS, primate endo-parasites analysis, and acoustics. Students already experienced in these skills can begin their project from day one. Due to time constraints, each topic must be approved prior to arrival at the field site. You may be able to arrange independent study or dissertation credit from your university.

Cost includes: transportation to and from the field centre by bus and boat from Sandakan Airport in Sabah, your accommodation and meals/drinks at the field centre during the two weeks, a conservation fee, fuel for boat trips, and the use of the facilities (including laboratory space, electricity, running water and internet!). The cost does NOT include international and domestic flights. Students with special dietary requirements (vegetarian) or allergies can be accommodated but needs to be pre-arranged.

Deadline for applications 31 January with £200 deposit; places filled on a first-come first serve basis.

Funding may be available from your local council. Students attending from one University, School or College may be eligible for Royal Society or British Ecological society expedition grants. Use Google to search for youth expedition/ conservation grants. Education/transferable skill stipends may also be available from your local town council, county or school.

Entrance Qualifications:
A moderate level of fitness is required for forest trekking to be carried out through sometimes boggy and swampy terrain.
